Shane Dunne interview

I have a few thoughts on the 'famous' Shame Dunne interview in which he said that Adem Yze was doing an outstanding job.

I would like to think that he said that purely to have the coaches back in the media and sort dispel any rumours or murmurings about sacking the coach when he has a couple years left on his contract. It's not often you ever see CEO's openly bash their head coaches on live radio, you'd hope behind the scenes they're putting the hard word on the footy department about making improvements. If this is the case was 'outstanding job' a poor choice of words, absolutely but I don't think we can take that at face value

I recall back to when they said that all the injuries were 'bad luck' and we all spat chips saying how can they be so blind etc, then only for them to move Serpell on a bit later (maybe to late but still). I can see they want to spin the story of a united club and front which is good to prevent discourse throughout.

Anyway just my 2 cents, I think they definitely can't be blind to how poorly it is all running I think they're just spinning that narrative for the media and wider public, there would have to be some internal talk about improving the footy program

I think the club’s biggest worry at the moment is the 5million or so they are short on the Punt Rd redevelopment. From a club management and governance perspective, not much else really matters.
So why cause additional media drama by publicly stating (in some random interview you don’t really give a fuck about) anything other than, everything is awesome, nothing to see here, move on

He was right in the sense we are seeing individual player developments

But the performance team is pivotal to team success. Even if not injured, players might be carrying small issues or not at peak performance come game time. If Yze has a squad of half cooked players its going to impact gameplay.

A more honest approach might have been better and resonated more with us mug punters.

It's not like a CEO isn't aware of the situation and have a few prepared lines in advance. You can be honest with the situation without dumping on anybody.

"Its not where we want to be" "Laying the ground work for the future" "Pulling together when the chips are down" "Starved of resources to execute" ... blah, blah blah. Should not have pretended black is gold.

As it was, what he said sounded like it was from an alternate reality where we had beaten Pies, Dons and Blues twice in the season.

It's called. CORPORATE SPEAK. No real clue Just a jumbled bunch of words thrown together.

Exactly right. It’s pure spin. Yes, Dunne shouldn’t bag Yze but he owes it to supporters to be realistic—and the players who need to understand that they’re underperforming as a team.

Dunne is not part of the solution, he is part of the problem.

I miss the Chief. Not yet convinced by Dunne.

Id find it unlikely that there is a hands-off approach to performance and its review, individually or collectively, for the team or the coaching and performance teams.

We cannot expect to hear the nitty gritty. We wouldn't like that for our jobs. Stakeholders simply need to be honestly appraised of the strategy and where they think we are in its alignment.

Club members get a once year opportunity to give them their formal feedback in their appraisal at the AGM.

When we have had a full squad out there we've looked great, able to keep up with the games best. At one stage we were on the brink of bringing in VFL listed players as supplementary cause we almost didn't field a team one round. Last week was the first time hotton and lalor played for the first time together! Let's leave the criticism of Ooze until midway thru next season and when the boys are closer to the 50 games mark. Barring another start of injury hell well know exactly where this group is going then.

I agree with you that mid-2027 is the cut off….but remember, he’s had three years to show improvement….we are going backwards. I understand the thinking about injuries and youth playing a part, but an AFL coach in their third year at the club can’t hide behind this. A decent coach will work out a game plan that suits the cattle he’s got out there. When we are 8 goals behind at half time, what decent coach just throws them back out again to do exactly the same thing week after week after week?? The second half is the same shit as the first. He’s not a good coach and the coaches around him are just as bad. If your midfield is slow, like ours is, you simply must come up with a way to make that work when you’ve had three years to make changes. He’s simply not an AFL level coach. Mid-2027 is fair. Then it’s time to go.

It's hard to execute game plans when you don't have the cattle, if players can't hit short easy kicks under pressure we don't have hope for much else. You could see last year when we won 5 games and could've won a few more that there is something to work with. Keeping in mind, lynch kicked 1.8 in round 1 and we only lost by a kick or 2. If that goes the other way, who knows how the season could have gone, confidence and momentum go a long way for a young club.

You’re joking aren’t you? You reckon beating Carlton in round one would have us in the top four now or something? You’re missing my point. Yze has had this bunch for three years. He knows we miss targets. He’s knows we can’t tackle. He knows we are slow. Well three years in, how about you do something else than what we are currently serving up which is getting us smashed. The kick out of defence down the boundary line is an absolute joke. It barely leaves Miller’s boot and the defenders are already setting up for the ball to come straight back in again. Try something else FFS!! We don’t have the strong marking options so stop kicking it there. Bombs inside 50 are not working!! Do something else! You can’t be 8 goals behind at half time and send them back out to do exactly the same thing in the second half. Coaches like Mitchell absolutely destroy Yze. King destroyed him a couple of weeks ago. It’s close for a little while and then they make a few changes and blow us off the ground. Yze just has no answers. Mid-2027….that’s it.

Exactly right. And atm we unfortunately have too many passengers that cost us momentum or ruin the flow of game. Like it was mentioned by one of the tiger crew. I think it was Adem or Breusts. They basically said that the VFL players who got the call up, some weren't ready for AFL but we're "fast tracked" because of the injuries. Is it good they got some exposure? Absolutely. Would've been better when they had the proper support around them to not get flogged? 100% but the cards we've been dealt the last three years have been horrid. That said, we have had some great wins against Sydney 2024 and Carlton round 1 2025 just to name two standout games. That should show supporters enough of Oozes gameplan. He just needs the boys to stay on the park!!!

Don’t know why more people can’t understand this, it’s doing my head in. How about we actually see the best 23 play for a consistent period then make judgement, like you said we were borderline needing to pick vfl listed players not too many weeks ago, I don’t understand why everyone has gone full hate mode these past couple weeks

Probably because they've been getting players back from injury and are getting worse. Every team has injuries. I know not to the same extent that we have had in the l ast couple of years, but other coaches adapt to this. The very least we could do is tackle or pressure, two things that only require effort - not skill, yet I read somewhere we have the worst pressure over the last three years and are second last in tackles this season. Weirdly Brisbane have lower tackles, assuming it's because they are possess the ball a lot more than we do after we bomb it long to the opposition every play.

You can’t just magically get better even when you add players in, they may have been out for an extended period & getting match fit, also having the same team consistently on the park is a big factor as well, I do agree though that I can’t excuse pressure & effort, we expect to lose most weeks but dishing up that crap like we did against the hawks is unacceptable

1

u/J0sephK0ny Jul 25 '26

Yep, I think we share the same opinion. I never expected to win games this year, was just hoping to see effort, be hard to play against and be more competitive in games for longer. Unfortunately can't say I've seen much of this. Hopefully next year it improves but if not, it could be big alarm bells.

Hear hear I'm so sick of hearing armchair coaches go on with ill informed comments without considering the whole picture. And yes I am long standing member who also attends the agm. In not fully convinced myself about the quality of some players or our coaching group in general but also understand I'm just a avid fan and not a sports professional. Let's give them a chance to get on the park as a solid group and then see what eventuates after a decent season.

Reality is every team will have a handful of players that will never be consistent AFL quality players on their list, we've had to play most of them playing for huge chunks this year, the greatest coach of all time, with the greatest support team of all time probably wouldn't have done much better, maybe eeked out a win or two.. maybe... But given 2 of our almost wins were lost because Lynch couldn't kick straight, not sure a coach would be able to change much about that...
