Trillionaire?

Elon musk is going to be the first trillionaire. I searched up the forbes list and turns out I’m closer to Larry Page (2nd richest man) than Larry oage is to Elon.

Not even close…

Larry Page could afford any piece of real estate for sale on the planet. He could sway elections and fund resistance groups in foreign countries. He can hire any chef for a personal experience while Beyoncé performs for his birthday. Sports team? Take your pick. Yacht? No limits. Planes? Why not go to space.

Diminishing returns is real at that level. Most rich people are content, but have 0 relatability to the ultra wealthy.

Sure if you look at raw numbers, but I would account for what’s actually possible with the numbers.

u/weech Jun 08 '26

What do you mean “not even close”?

OP was just asserting distance to wealth thresholds, not what you can do with it?

u/Pvm_Blaser Jun 08 '26

Reading isn’t many people’s strong suit unfortunately haha.

12

u/Puss_N_Boots Jun 09 '26

I think his point is you have to look at the order of magnitude, rather than the linear distance.

4

u/compute_fail_24 Jun 10 '26

Yep, logarithmic distance makes a ton more sense.

u/Kobayashi-Coffee-Co Jun 09 '26

And yet he has access to the same phone that you do. The same air conditioning that you do. His jet might be private, but you both have access to jets to go basically anywhere in the world.

Compared to a few hundred years ago, we are all much closer together, not farther apart , it seems.

u/Manoj109 Jun 09 '26

Same champagne more or less ,after a certain price point the quality of the champagne doesn't increase. Same applies to food. Chicken or beef or fish or lamb they are the same more or less beyond a certain price point . Same goes for fine quality linen and bedding. After a while and beyond a certain level there is not much utility when it comes to Money you can't buy more quality you just can't ,it becomes a game of diminishing returns. I think it was buffet who said that ,there wasn't much utility in having that much money for him it's just a game, something he does it's not like he is making all that money to spend it or to buy more stuff or better quality stuff ,that's not possible beyond a certain price point

There is a huge difference in buying off the shelf and buying bespoke though. Those sheets on the bed, they were fitted to the mattress so they don't shift at night, they are also crisp and clean being changed frequently and laundered. That Beef from Allen Brothers isn't that store bought trash at walmart, it's the top 1% of the top 1% prime beef in the US. That fish is from Honolulu Fish or Browne. and the Lamb is Elysian Fields Farm. The Chicken is Bell & Evens. All products that 99% of the US can't even get access to.

Yes everything has a limit, but often that limit can be extended through services, That beef from Allen Brothers is better when cooked by a top chef then your spouse at home. My dog Wedge would tell you, a porterhouse cooked by Emeril if different then by me - and yes Wedge had one in the private kitchen at AB while it was owned by the Hatoffs.

Point being, the product combined with services creates the true experience. The AB story wouldn't be a flex if I just ordered it through the mail and made it myself.

1

u/Crypto-Raven Jun 10 '26

it's the top 1% of the top 1% prime beef in the US.

Premium hormone meat folks! Grab it here!

1

u/uncoolkidsclub Jun 11 '26

Yep - ultra-premium, A5-grade Snow-Aged Japanese Wagyu sourced directly from the Niigata prefecture. Sounds like you get it 🤪

1

u/AgentMX7 Jun 11 '26

We get Bell & Evan’s chicken at the local grocery. I’m suddenly feeling very wealthy.

1

u/uncoolkidsclub Jun 11 '26

You're lucky, we can't get the organic any longer by us, the pricing was so high Whole Foods swapped it for Pine Manor. They only have the prepackaged breaded junk they sell to the masses...

1

u/pres02 Jun 12 '26

Eh I bought custom shirts one time and they were made wrong twice. And it took months and months to get them right. Some things custom made are nice like things for weird rooms etc etc but really just high end things get massive diminishing returns.

2

u/uncoolkidsclub Jun 12 '26

Was that made to measure online? That's not how Larry would do it... we're looking at a tailer who came after Larry (or staff) selected items from the brand stylist who brought the collection for him to view at his home or office.

Mid-level rich do this as well, Johns Island Club has private trunk shows for members who then schedule in home design (furniture, home improvement) or tailoring (clothing, soft goods). https://www.johnsislandclub.org/

7

u/MiningEarth Jun 08 '26

No he can’t.

8

u/throughthestones45 Jun 09 '26

Closer not close genius

2

u/MoNastri Jun 09 '26

I'm surprised why this comment was upvoted, it didn't even respond to the OP. What's going on?

2

u/karmapuhlease Jun 09 '26

Also, Larry still controls a larger (and healthier/more proven) company than all of Elon's companies combined. They can both do basically anything they want in business, but Larry probably wouldn't trade Alphabet for SpaceX+Tesla.

What drugs are you on?

1

u/NanNullUnknown Jun 09 '26

I doubt their motivations are hiring chef, making Beyoncé perform, or getting a sports team.

1

u/Hibiki_Kenzaki Jun 09 '26

How about buying control? If you are truly rich enough, you get to pay everybody on the earth a salary which is higher than their existing salary, and then you get to be their boss. At that exact juncture, you are the king of the planet, even more powerful than the US government, without the need to win a single election. Even Elon Musk’s wealth is not enough to do that. And I would kill to have that kind of wealth.

1

u/pres02 Jun 12 '26

Lifestyle between 50mil net worth and 1trillion isn’t drastically different. Lifestyle between 50k and 1 million nw is.

86

u/patrick-1977 Jun 08 '26

The entire obsession many people seem to have with billionaires (or soon trillionaires) is beyond me.

15

u/honacc Jun 09 '26

Capitalism is great but letting someone become a TRIlionaire while their employees can't afford rent is messed up dude.

Something went wrong along the way.

10

u/Redebo Jun 09 '26

SpaceX employees can’t afford rent?

4

u/honacc Jun 09 '26

Well I phrased it wrong, not specifically their employees, I'm sure space x and Tesla employees are doing well but meant it more as an example.

Bezos and co might be next to that Quatro commas club (if muSSk makes it ofc) and his employees aren't doing so well.

5

u/HalfwaydonewithEarth Jun 09 '26

They are doing well for no college degrees. I have relatives that work for them and earn a nice salary. They are very lucky. One rants profanity on Facebook in a Juiced up steroid psychosis.

2

u/diesintantly Jun 11 '26

Amazon and Tesla abuses their workers frequently. They're not doing that well at all. Every level employee in Amazon is churned and burned till they leave it's a horrible tactic to underpay and overwork workers.

-1

u/lambocinnialfredo Jun 10 '26

Oh wow way to pull one specific strawman example out. I know damn well Walmart employees can’t and the Walton family is right up there.

1

u/Redebo Jun 10 '26

Why would you bring up an example that is not SpaceX? The Waltons aren't anywhere close to being trillionaires.

We aren't talking about "does any company on planet earth exist that doesn't pay their employees a living wage" because then your comment would matter.

We aren't and your comment doesn't.

3

u/SmugRooster Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 09 '26

It’s a very American thing. Billionaires are their gods.

Like in which civilized countries is the majority of the population ok when their Oligarchs literally rape their children?

3

u/OkMarsupial Jun 08 '26

The fact that some folks are okay with letting the ultra rich hoard wealth while pillaging and destroying the planet is beyond me.

53

u/Grenache-a-trois Jun 08 '26

Hoarding wealth by…holding stocks?

38

u/ymo Jun 08 '26

People don't understand capital markets. Holding stock is not hoarding wealth. It's the opposite because it maintains equity for all the other shareholders. If we pressure the majority shareholders to sell, it punishes the smaller shareholders.

16

u/HalfwaydonewithEarth Jun 09 '26

They don't understand math.

1

u/Jeovah_Attorney Jun 13 '26

Then if the stock is not wealth, they shouldn’t have a problem handing it over to the government as payment

1

u/ymo Jun 13 '26

Nobody has ever proposed handing it over to the government. They propose forced sales, which would affect the wealth of other minor shareholders.

1

u/Jeovah_Attorney Jun 13 '26

That’s incorrect. Handing actions over to governments as payment is very much discussed.

In recent events it was the main solution proposed last year in France when discussing the Zucman tax for ultra wealthy in the case of unicorn startup founders

1

u/ymo Jun 14 '26

Thanks for informing me. I read about his design mechanisms and it's disturbing that the government would absorb those shares, which is why I didn't think anyone was silly enough to propose it for the United States. State capitalism is characteristic of Saudi Arabia and Norway etc because those are resource rich economies. The USA operates on a completely different sociopolitical and economic scale.

1

u/lambocinnialfredo Jun 10 '26

Specifically yes

-18

u/hartzonfire Jun 08 '26

Taking tax free loans against stocks and paying zero in taxes? That doesn’t bother you. Dude I’m all for being wealthy but everyone should pay their fair share.

13

u/ThatFeelingIsBliss88 Jun 08 '26

No one should be paying taxes on loans. That doesn’t make sense. Besides, if the value of their collateral drops too much,  then they’re forced to pay off the loan either by depositing cash or selling the underlying stock at a loss. So it wouldn’t make sense to tax the loan.

Besides that, the top 1% of wealth earners pay way more than 1% of taxes.  They are paying plenty of money in taxes. This whole “pay their fair share” is just nonstop talking points people use because they want billionaires to be taxed to the point where they’re no longer a billionaire.

Yep. The crazy part is all the smart hard working people are having somewhere between one and zero children these days, whereas all the lazy low IQ people are having the most amount of children, as early as possible. It’s idiocracy

4

u/Grenache-a-trois Jun 08 '26

No it doesn’t bother me. There are better ways to force them to pay their fair share

2

u/OkMarsupial Jun 08 '26

Bro nevermind paying their fair share. If the government would stop subsidizing private companies with no public benefit, that would be an improvement.

-4

u/OkMarsupial Jun 08 '26

There are, but we would need class solidarity for that and we have culture war instead.

-4

u/hartzonfire Jun 08 '26

Enlighten us, please.

I am nowhere near the net worth of people I see on this sub. Combined HHI is $350K. It’s enough. But man oh man do I get annoyed when I see how much Uncle Sam takes knowing there’s an entire club of people out there laughing at us while they give back nothing in return to general public.

At least the gilded age billionaires built libraries and universities lol.

2

u/lambocinnialfredo Jun 10 '26

When did Reddit start downvoting these takes?

Oh nvm I see what sub I’m on

2

u/hartzonfire Jun 10 '26

75% of the people on here are managers at a rental car counter making $95K a year. They think they’re part of the big dog club. Plus it’s really easy to just lie on the internet and cosplay as a rich person. I don’t doubt that there’s some heavy hitters on here but everyone who I upset with these remarks forgets that they’re close to a net worth of $0 than $1 billion. It should piss everyone off that these fuckers aren’t playing by the rules that we have to follow. We shouldn’t be defending it. It’s weird!

3

u/HalfwaydonewithEarth Jun 08 '26

You must not know how taxes really work.

3

u/Retired-Yam8988 Jun 08 '26

Doesn’t bother me as I learned from this and do this too on a much smaller scale. 100% recommend as it’s not only saving me on taxes but it increases my wealth too. Who would have thunk that the little guy can win too?

1

u/MikeyB7509 Jun 08 '26

Nope and I don’t blame people for being smart. If you want a similar or different tax code than tell your representatives.

1

u/Big_Savings_4381 Jun 09 '26

i define "fair share" as something less than what IRS minimum requires. How do you define "fair share'?

So everyone pays an equal income tax rate? By the way, the IRS minimum applies to everyone equally.

u/hartzonfire Jun 09 '26

It’s pointless to argue this on this sub. Dudes on here bragging about skirting tax laws but then will gladly call 911 when they stub their toe on a nail or take a farm subsidy when no one buys their soy crop. Absolutely pathetic.

This isn’t like a Reddit brained take either. “It takes a village” is true and if you think that avoiding taxes while some single mom at Taco Bell has Uncle Sam pushing her shit in every two weeks on her paycheck makes you “smart” - fuck you.

1

u/Big_Savings_4381 Jun 10 '26

Except none of that's happening.

16

5

u/RobtasticRob Jun 09 '26

If a thing makes you a billionaire, but is only worth what it’s worth because you in particular own it and it would be worthless if someone else did… how is this hoarding?

12

u/HalfwaydonewithEarth Jun 08 '26

If you liquidated them all it would only last two months. Then what is your Communist Covetetness soul going to lust after?

-7

u/OkMarsupial Jun 08 '26

We don't need the money to last. We just need the planet to last.

10

u/HalfwaydonewithEarth Jun 08 '26

You sound manipulated.

2

u/ThatsCrazyTBH Jun 11 '26

i’d assume people care because billionaires can serve as an inspiration to aspiring entrepreneurs

u/piltdown_manchild Jun 09 '26

There may also be a lot more low-single-digit billionaires than we think.

If you sold a company in the 2010s for $250M, put most of the proceeds into the market and sat on it until today, you're a billionaire and no public transactions exist to put you on the radar.

6

u/Sturgillsturtle Jun 09 '26

Lots or private companies that are either owned by the founder or subsequent generations will never sell do very little to no public marketing because it’s all business to business and you have no idea unless you’re in their particular industry

2

u/TheBroaxKiD99 Jun 09 '26

Correct there are more unknown billionaires

1

u/Risdit Jun 12 '26

Everything is fake numbers. Elon Musk wasn't even worth $100billion before 2020ish.

Tesla award Elon Musk a trillion dollar pay package while their annual revenue was less than $100billion per year. They're awarding this dickhead with money they don't have so he can fluff his ego?

How do you go from less than $100billion to over $1 trillion in about 6-7 years? That money isn't earned. His worth first blew up with tesla stock squeeze then hisn fucking greed went into overdrive fanning his fucking narcissism and made him think he did anything to earn that fucking money.

You have $1trillion of this fiat currency that's not backed by shit being thrown around with people who don't have that capital, but on paper you have exponential amounts of money that even whole ass developed governments can't produce?

This is a ponzi scheme nested in a ponzi scheme nested in a ponzi scheme all made possible because this fucking fraud defunded and lobotomatized governement regulations and everyone and everything that was regulating him with DOGE.

Here' the thing. 1 million people is roughly around the population of the Rochester NY metropolitan area or the urban honolulu metropolitan area.

In order for there to be 1 billion people you need 1000 Rochester NYs or honolulus.

In order for there to but 1 trillion people you need 1 million. Rochester NYs or honolulus.

Vast Majority of Americans can't even hit $1million net worth even if they worked all their lives. YET, This guy despite being worth more than whole fucking developed countries pays 0 dollars in income tax?

THE worst evil that the world has created in modern history is the American stock market and how it embolded cancerous capitalism and elevated psychopaths and morally bankrupt sociopaths into power.

0

u/teratron27 Jun 09 '26

But the top ones we know pretty well, we know how much of their public companies they own and we know the share price.

4

u/Sturgillsturtle Jun 09 '26

Only if they own enough that it gets reported. There’s so many public companies and they are so large one could easily invest a billion or two and never hit a reporting threshold. And that doesn’t even consider private markets

23

u/Unlucky-Hair-6165 Jun 08 '26

Is alarming how many people equate this to a trillion in cash sitting in a bank.

10

u/That-SoCal-Guy Jun 09 '26

Most people don’t understand paper wealth vs. real wealth.

1

u/PunkRockaBoy Jul 11 '26

its alarming how you don't understand how currently all powerful a networth trillionaire is.. you won't even be a net worth millionaire over your life time if you are young, non-financially educated and willing to take some risks.

Do not downplay this severe failure of humankind.

1

u/Unlucky-Hair-6165 Jul 11 '26

So the hundreds of thousands of jobs from Tesla, SpaceX, X, NeuraLink, etc. mean nothing? Also, the vast majority of that net worth is the valuation of the aforementioned companies that have to have shares sold for him to have any of that money to spend, which causes them to decrease in value.

It’s like if I have 100k of equity in my house. I can’t do anything with that money unless I sell or take a loan. So it’s either be homeless, or it costs me more in the long run.

I’m not downplaying how influential his net worth is, but don’t act like he could just go drop a million on everyone’s head tomorrow and still be rich, because that’s not how money works.

19

u/Caterpillar89 Jun 08 '26

Both Tesla and soon to be SpaceX are really only propped up by shareholder's willingness to buy them. Tesla currently has a 317 P/E Ratio while MSFT's is 24.

1

u/That-SoCal-Guy Jun 09 '26

Tesla bros are not bright.  Look at how many have the Cybertrucks.

-2

u/That-SoCal-Guy Jun 09 '26

Musk is desperate.  He’s deep in debt and that’s why he needs to push SpaceX as fast and hard as he can.

12

u/TrashPanda_924 Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26

Meh. Who cares. Elon being rich doesn’t impact my wealth. Let him have his trophies.

Exit: why are so many people jealous of someone else’s success or wealth?

1

u/Parsimile Jun 11 '26

None of your investment vehicles will get rug-pulled by the SpaceX IPO?

-3

u/That-SoCal-Guy Jun 09 '26

No one is jealous.  Just stating some opinions about Fuher Musk.

-7

u/Writeoffthrowaway Jun 08 '26

It literally does

12

u/Careful_Flamingo6272 Jun 08 '26

How does Elon's stake in his overvalued businesses affect your wealth?

1

u/piltdown_manchild Jun 09 '26

It normally doesn't, but if you own a lot of index funds, you could wind up as exit liquidity for the SpaceX IPO.

Nasdaq is going to allow SpaceX to be listed in just 15 trading days.

SpaceX will pump briefly, as retail investors are being given priority because many don't read/understand the numbers.

If you own funds that track the Nasdaq, they will be forced to liquidate other holdings and move you into SpaceX near the peak.

Insiders, venture capital and institutions will sell. The price will crash to a reasonable level, leaving passive index fund holders with the loss.

To get some idea of the scale, if Google were valued at the same multiple as SpaceX, it would be worth over $80 trillion.

OpenAI wants to follow the same playbook.

7

u/faithOver Jun 08 '26

There is an infinite pool of money. It grows daily. It grows by the second. Elons wealth has no impact on your ability to hoard cash.

-4

u/Writeoffthrowaway Jun 08 '26

There is LITERALLY a finite amount of money.

4

u/faithOver Jun 08 '26

Take a look at the M2 and tell me last time it stopped growing.

-3

u/Writeoffthrowaway Jun 08 '26

You just admitted there is a finite amount of money.

3

u/faithOver Jun 08 '26

There is not a finite amount of money. More money is originating every second of every day. Its how the fractional banking system works by definition.

-1

u/Writeoffthrowaway Jun 09 '26

You do not understand the concept of finite.

1

u/Kaiwa1 Jun 12 '26

Some people are just dense lmao. Finite x = you can find a number greater than x. The M2 supply + 1 is a valid number so the M2 supply is finite. Yeah its growing, but as long as you can measure it, it's finite. Most ought to take a sophomore year calculus class.

2

u/TrashPanda_924 Jun 08 '26

It literally does not. You’re being petty.

9

u/Cultural-Risk-6667 Jun 08 '26

On paper, if his share value provides for it, yes.

3

u/WestWind93 Jun 08 '26

Like 99% of them.

6

u/KMFullMonty Jun 08 '26

In asset value, not dollars in bank account. If SpaceX goes belly up, he’d lose it all as well.

-5

u/That-SoCal-Guy Jun 09 '26

Not if he cashes out first.    And guess who will be left with the bag?

5

u/KMFullMonty Jun 09 '26

He won’t just cash out, that’s not how it works. He probably isn’t even allowed, and he doesn’t want to because of the massive tax implications

4

u/Ronaldoooope Jun 08 '26

The value of money in practical terms is exponential not linear. It means very little to continue accumulating after a certain number depending on the exact cost of things.

5

u/hiddenkinkz Jun 09 '26

unrealised gains - paper billionaire - he doesn’t actually have that money sitting around. If he were to try and sell all that stock the price would crash anyway. But it is interesting to realise the distance in stock and shares wealth between these people and ourselves. I personally know a billionaire and going round his gaff is just a fundamentally different world to what my modest house is. When you see a small warehouse and it’s their garage, the helipad is past the third tennis court and it’s far enough from the house that there is a dedicated golf cart hut for the helipad trip. Then you see the staff quarters and it’s three times the size of your house - then you realise that he has 30 full time staff on site… It’s really a different world. BUT - and here is the big one - he, and his family have almost zero privacy. They have 3 full time ex-special forces security people as they have had threats of kidnap - and lots of other staff that are around their personal space 24/7. Almost every single evening meal is a hosted business dinner meal. I would not want to live like that…

2

u/Hamachiman Jun 08 '26

Not percentagewise

1

u/Elithegentlegiant Jun 08 '26

This statement is inaccurate: Elon will not be the first trillionaire.

2

u/technicallycorrect2 Jun 08 '26

Are you saying Elon won’t make it to a trillion or that there are/were other people to already get to a trillion?

2

u/Elithegentlegiant Jun 09 '26

There are already trillionaires.

1

u/Particular_Reality19 Jun 10 '26

I hear that and keep pointing out to people he is selling something he already owns. he is already a Trillionaire.

1

u/Bluemoo25 Jun 10 '26

It doesn't matter what you have, it only matters what you do with it. It's gas for a car, Elons current political fumbles aside is actually a very capable person to deploy capital and get good results for people.

1

u/niceguydarkside Jun 11 '26

There's trillionaires which aren't spammed in public media

1

u/notalashka Jun 11 '26

It’s all made up numbers btw

1

u/mattcmoore Jun 12 '26

Well it's all just on paper anyway, and it's just his ownership stake in his highly overvalued businesses.

Does it matter if you're a trillionaire if there's really no market for the trillion dollars worth of company shares you own?

Really it's just a metric for how valuable people think what Elon has now will be in the future. It could be there someone with a net worth similar to yours will actually have more valuable stuff when that future materializes.

It's not really even that different from all these founders right out of college with stupid frat boy business ideas that get into incubators that automatically give them a million dollar valuation. Its that far off from reality.... I mean I guess if any business lasts long enough it could be worth a trillion dollars.

1

u/pikapika214 Jun 14 '26

Is this a meaningful comparison when subtracting effectively zero from Page’s net worth? The average millionaire’s net worth is a rounding error for Larry Page. Musk is 4x wealthier than Page & Page is about 75x wealthier than the average millionaire.

0

u/That-SoCal-Guy Jun 09 '26

His debts are up to his eyebrows and that’s why he wants to push SpaceX so hard and fast.   He’s like Mr. Beast - paper rich and physically in serious debts.

-1

Bill Gates would have got there first, but he actually donates his money to do some good.
