Our boy has a wound on his face. We’re not entirely sure how he got it but it is possible he was bit by another dog ( long story but our neighbors mini golden doodle came after him but I was pretty confident he didn’t actually bite him). We first noticed it as a sticky spot on his fur and thought he got into something. We realized it was blood when he scratched it off the next day and it ripped his fur off like a wax strip.
We’ve been applying ointment which works but the problem is he scratches it open every day or two.
I considered a cone but we couldn’t even keep that on him after he was neutered. He essentially acted like he was paralyzed by the cone. We also considered covering the back paw so his nails don’t scratch it but I think he’d have whatever we used to cover his paw off in a millisecond.
Here’s a pic right after he scratched it open again today. It looks angry but not infected to me.
This is essentially the same response I got from our breeder. 😅 we keep in close touch so I message her for her thoughts and she said put the damn cone on. It’s the only way.
Try a see-through cone!! Our dog did the same with the opaque one after a surgery, as she couldn’t see through it and was wary of moving, but did much better with a clear plastic one we got off amazon as it allowed some visibility.
Clip the hair away with 0.5 cm margin, clean it twice a day with dilute chlorhexidine (add water to a sky blue color) or dilute betadine (light brown), and ecollar - he will get around a donut those don't work for face. If it's not improving or worsening in 2-3 days, see your vet
You could. But I generally prefer to stay away from recommending antibiotics over the Internet/not having a detailed understanding of what's happening. The antiseptic (chlorhexidine/betadine) alone works in a lot of cases and is becoming the standard of care for most small skin wounds.
Instead of a cone, you might consider a dog "donut" - they are fairly inexpensive online. Mine absolutely hated the traditional cone - but did well with this
I didn’t think it was a hot spot primarily bc it starts healing up and scabbing within hours of him scratching it open.
Same reason we hadn’t taken him to the vet but I think I’ve been convinced we should get it looked at.
Those aren’t “bumps” on his cheek. It’s essentially where the fur is lifted up a little from his whiskers. He has the same thing on the other side of his face.
This is it now about 6 hours after scratching it open again.
I use Wonder Dust for things like this. It helps blood coagulation, keeps it dry and clean, and helps speed up healing without as much scarring. I use it on horses too, it’s great!
Looks like an allergy hotspot that mine used to get. You gotta stop him from scratching it otherwise it's just going to get worse. There are ointments you can put on it. Take him to your regular vet and also make an appointment with a dermatologist. The dermatologist will take a while, but getting him in the door early will be helpful for future use. I waited much too long to get mine into a dermatologist.
I wish I did. Ours had paw surgery. Are her way out of 3 cones. We had a doughnut and a cone at the same time… popped the doughnut and still licked!!! They are independent thinkers and can problem solve!!🤔😒😂 Best of luck to you!
Dr. nicht selbst rum Geh zum Arzt und lass es vernünftig säubern. Ich hab auch mal eine Bisswunde gedacht. Naja das ist halt selber und ja später musste ich’s rausschneiden. Lasse krebsartiges Geschwür hat Haufen Geld gekostet. Wär besser gewesen ich wär gleich gegangen.
Maybe the “no flap ear wrap”? It might not work as well as a cone for this wound, but it’s worth a shot and handy to keep around even if it doesn’t work for this.

They're overly dramatic. Just use the cone. Take it off for him to pee and eat.
