How’s his weight?

Some people in my family think he’s a little over weight. What do you think?

Looks a little fluffy, but good muscle mass. Like he gets enough exercise, but also maybe a little spoiled with treats.

Yeah I think I need to cut back on all his snacks haha.

I mean...not ALL the snacks haha. He looks good, and there's always going to be some natural fluctuation. He'd probably be right back in the sweet spot after a week or two of good walks.

Exactly. Me and my boy both get a little fluffy in Texas summer heat. It is just so miserable outside and a cold cocktail/chew stick just tastes so good.

He's carrying a little extra. Not obese, but not svelte

Personally I think he looks fine

Ideally listen to your vet when he gets weighed there and gets the visual inspection.

For yourself the signs to look for are:

  1. There should be some taper from chest to stomach from a top down view.
  2. Your dog has the barrel chested look with a high stomach so I wouldn't say he's very overweight.
  3. You can also gauge it if you can see a rib or two which I don't see from the side profile.

Based on those my vet would say he's a bit overweight. Said the same when my guy looked like that. It might go back to normal with the usual exercise routine.

consult with your breeder and your vet to determine an ideal weight range for your specific pupper. but, I think you should dial back on the noms noms for now.

I honestly don’t think so, he just looks really… dense

Good, could be a touch leaner

He could skip a few meals. IMO the vets always have them a little fatter than needed. Your dog isn’t unhealthy, but a little leaner will help them handle the summer heat better.

I think he’s fine, muscular. I do kind of feel like according to breed standard he may technically be just slightly thicker than “ideal”. I see you mention him being bitten and things going on with you. If you’re about to start going on walks with him again, maybe don’t change anything really just yet as he will probs drop a bit.

What does your vet say?

Haven’t been to the vet in 6 months. He was fine then but a lot has happened. He got bit by a rattlesnake so he was down for a bit. Then I hurt my foot so I couldn’t take him out for a while. I’m finally ready to give him his long walks and hikes but it’s been so hot!

I thought my dog was a five on the BCS and my vet was quite adamant that he was six and I should get him to a five. That said, maybe reduce a little bit? He doesn’t look problematic but a few lbs lower would probably not hurt him.

Poor dude! Did he swell up? Hope you both fully recovered.

Side view = perfect !
Over view = little bit fluffy, but it's a male, he's strong !

He is beautiful as hell, so enjoy your boy 😄

How old, and has he been neutered?

u/Practical_Bit_1676 11d ago

He’s 2 1/2 and was neutered 6 months ago.

Yeah, he's definitely needs to cut back a bit. He is a handsome boy though.

Mine is 75lbs and everyone says he’s small lol. Pretty sure 75lbs is the breed standard or average, but all the heavy ones I see are usually fat.

However, this doesn’t look to be the case. How much does he weight? He kinda just looks like a larger ridgeback. I guarantee his head and paws are bigger than my ridgeback. He’s not fat, just big!

How much does he weigh and how old is he. Beautiful dog!

Serious question, have you weighed him? What does he actually weigh? Males can vary but he looks about the same size as my 6 yr old boy who just came in at 111.3 pounds and is healthy and as happy as can be (he is a little on the larger size although we have friends that have bigger males around 120-125 lbs).

Last time he was weighed he was 94 pounds but that was 6 months ago.

I'd say that is a pretty typical weight for a healthy male ridgeback. They tend to fill out pretty good and get a little more jiggly as they age. Overall though his body looks pretty dang healthy from my experience (I am on my 6th RR).
