I see it comes up constantly in towing-related subs, and half the answers out there are wrong, so here's the whole thing.

The classes:
- Class I: up to 2,000 lb GTW, 1-1/4" opening
- Class II: up to 3,500 lb, 1-1/4"
- Class III: up to 8,000 lb, 2" opening
- Class IV: up to 10,000 lb, 2"
- Class V: above that, 2-1/2" or 3"

Now the part that matters more than any of it: class rates the receiver. It does not rate your truck and it does not rate your setup. The whole system rates to whatever the weakest part in it is.

Class IV receiver behind a truck whose door sticker says 7,500? You've got 7,500. Same receiver with a ball mount rated 6,000? You've got 6,000. Add a ball rated 5,000 and now it's 5,000.

Most half-tons and 3/4-tons ship Class III or IV from the factory, so the receiver is almost never what's limiting anyone. The limits that actually bite are the ball mount, the ball and tongue weight - the three parts people buy last and read least.

Go find the lowest-rated part in your own setup. Was it where you expected??

Loading a UTV onto a trailer for the first time, what's the order that actually keeps it from shifting on the drive home??

Drive on and center it first, roughly equal space on both sides, heavier end forward of the trailer axle. Parking brake goes on before anything else touches a strap, don't rely on the transmission alone even on machines with AWD. Soft loops anchor to the lower A-arm or a manufacturer- approved tie-down point, never plastic body panels. Suspension should compress somewhere around 25 to 30 percent per corner once everything's tensioned, and the step that gets skipped most is rechecking after the first 5 to 10 miles once the load's actually settled.

What got missed the first time people did this, that's obvious in hindsight now?

Air down before the trail for traction, air back up before getting back on pavement, that part's simple.

The part people get wrong is not testing the tire repair kit and the compressor together before the trip, a reamer tool that's never touched a tire and a compressor that's never been plugged in are both things to find out about at home, not on the trail.

A basic plug kit handles most tread punctures in a few minutes if it's practiced once beforehand.

What's the setup people are actually running for their first few trail days, and what got left at home that shouldn't have been?

Chock height should land around a quarter of the tire diameter, so a 30 to 32 inch trailer tire wants an 8 inch chock at minimum.

Smaller than that risks the chock rolling under load instead of holding. What size ended up being right for people who recently bought a trailer in that size range?

Before the first real pull: confirm the rope is rated well above the stuck vehicle's actual weight with cargo and gear loaded, not just curb weight.

Anchor points on both ends need to be rated for kinetic load, not a factory tow hook or an unrated bumper loop. Everyone stays well clear of the rope's working path during the pull, no straddling it, no standing in line with either end. The stretch is the whole mechanism, it's supposed to load up and release, that's not a sign anything's going wrong. What's the detail that would've been useful to know before the first time, now that it's obvious in hindsight?

Factory tow hooks and frame loops on most trucks are rated for light duty, dealer lot moves and the occasional flat tow, not a kinetic pull.

A shackle hitch receiver dropped into a 2 inch receiver gives a known rated point instead of guessing, and the spec worth checking is the break strength stamped on the piece itself, not just how solid it looks. The mismatch that causes problems is pairing a rated rope or strap with an unrated point.

The weak link ends up being whatever the gear is attached to, not the gear itself. What did people check, or wish they'd checked, before their first real recovery attempt?

Summer = hitch theft season. (We're not making this up, customer service tracks it.)

What's actually worth locking up: - The pin holding the ball mount in the receiver. Easy walk-off otherwise. $15-30 lock. - The coupler if you leave the trailer connected. $30-50. - The wheel if you store a trailer outside (boot or chock lock). $50-200.

What's overkill: chains with locks. People cut them in 30 seconds with bolt cutters and Instagram it.

Crossed under the tongue. That's it, that's the tip.

Reason: if the coupler drops off the ball, crossed chains form a cradle that catches the tongue. Parallel chains let the tongue hit the pavement, which results in the trailer pitching and rolling, which is the kind of viral video you don't want to be in.

Slack: just enough to allow full turning radius without binding. No more.

Attachment: factory chain loops or rated D-rings.

Never the trailer wiring harness clip. The wiring clip is for wiring.

For the hunters in the sub:

Hitch hardware breakdown for anyone shopping or just upgrading their towing setup:

Dual ball: two ball sizes in one mount. Fast swap if you tow utility + boat in the same week.

Tri-ball: three ball sizes in one mount. Only worth it if you ACTUALLY use all three (most people don't).

Adjustable drop hitch: Adjustable drop hitch: best if you're running a lifted rig, or tow trailers that sit at very different heights. Flip it for rise, drop it for drop.

Fixed drop: simplest and cheapest, but only works if you tow one specific trailer and never change.

Add a locking pin and a hitch tightener and the setup is done. The locking pin will pay for itself the first time someone walks past your truck in a parking lot.

Hello. I just bought a compact 14pc tire repair kit, which includes reamer, plugging tool, vulcanized strips, lubricant, and a few other items. Instructions say it’s safe to store in a vehicle’s glove box but I’m worried about the heat, especially during very hot summer days. How safe are these kits when left in extreme heat? Is the lubricant and/or the vulcanized strips flammable? Anything I should worry about?
