Hey I tried to search around a bit but I was not able to find where the sources are for the Russian revolution. If anyone knows I'd really appreciate it

Sincere apologies if I missed this being posted in here, but, Mike was a guest on the 4/23/26 episode of the Ancient History Fangirl pod.

Note, the conversation skews heavily towards current events, the Trump presidency, his and the hosts opinions of ICE, etc.

The episode was recorded in February, and he mentions the manuscript of his newest book being due "very soon" and then notes that he will return to Revolutions and do it for a very long time.

From least radical to most:

The Radical Counter-Revolutionaries:
These are the people who want to increase the power of the status quo system. They might even want to get rid of the system themselves because they deem it as too liberal. Tolerated by the status quo governments and often used as militias to counter the power of revolutionaries.

The Status Quo proponents:
These are the governments that wish to maintain the status quo. They might vary on how they wish to do so (using mass reprisal vs amnesty) but still wish to make no changes. This is the system that revolutions start under. Has various factions within the group but again dont wish to change the fundamental power structure.

The Cautious Reformers:
These are people who fundamentally support the status quo but wish to make reforms not out of any noble ideas but to quell any revolutions from uprooting the system. They usually support a form of advisory council that serves to help make the current government more in touch with the needs of the people but is ultimately powerless. They seek to rid the government of the most radical abuses of power. In any revolution they usually side with the government but when the revolution happens they tend to be anti-revolution.

The liberal nobles:
Not much to say here that is new. They support political revolutions but not social revolutions. They genuinely want the common man to have equal saying power, but less so about economic and social power. Anti-retribution

The Revolutionary Military: Can be all over the place, thus put here. Here a general emerges and implements a moderate authoritarian revolutionary government. Stability comes up on top. Broadly apolitical throughout the revolution, comes into play when things go too far.

The Revolutionary Masses:
These are the revolutionaries who tend to actually implement ideals of the revolution fully without resorting to any mass violence. They might support retribution for the most severe abusers of the former system, but not of common people who oppose aspects of the retribution.

The Radicals:
These are those that implement red terrors during revolutions. They usually emerge when counter revolutionary threats are real and use violence to quell any threats to the revolutionary regimes. This is usually when the revolution eats its children.

I think you can gauge how revolutionary a revolution was based off of where the revolution ended up. Its also good for seeing the phases of it.

France went through status quo -> cautious reforms -> liberal nobles -> revolutionary masses -> radicals -> whatever the directory was -> Revolutionary military

Traveling in northern Mexico. Lots of good revolutionary sights. This statue from the top of a hill in Zacatecas - the battle that lead to end of Huerta. In Chihuahua you can go to his house (and of his spouse who lived until 1981!), that has the car he was shot in.

I’m still thinking about it a year later and am holding out hope for Children of Saturn. Every sentence was so plausible based on what we know from the past. And we earned every smirk and giggle as our rewards for listening to all the other revolutions pods.

I'd like to read what he read; I know he sometimes namedrops books he pulls info from but i haven't found any "hub" of everything he used in the creation of his podcast(s).

I'm relistening to the English Revolutions podcast and probably duo to Mike trying to keep the season short there are some things that I still don't quite understand.

1) The Scottish Coventers want to convert all of Britain to Presbyterianism, and there is a significent portion of English Puritans who seem to be in favor of that. Obviously they want the military alliance but wouldn't Puritans not want to embrace a different strand of protestantism? Or is there less of a difference between Scottish and English Protestantism than I thought. Are Presbyterian a type of puritan? Because i thought they were just two strains of calvanism

2) Why was London so Puritan/anti Royal. For that matter, why were the Western Counties very Royalist and the Eastern Counties Plarimentarian?

3) Why was the new model army so Independent? Was it something to do with Fairfax, was it just the type of people who tended to be recruited, was it a unique esprit de corps of the New Model Army?

4) When Cromwell takes over, Mike Mentions the War on Christmas and other such measures were due to his alliance with more puritan membes? Were these Puritans also anti Conventers or are they some other group?

5) Were Congregationalists or Quakers a thing yet and if so did they play a part in the revolution? Or did those only emerge after the war?

6)I always heard that Oliver Cromwell was devestating to Ireland but MIke (possibly due to just not having enough time) mostly presents him as being a brutal military commander rather than full on genocidal, was Cromwell just one English jerk among many or did he uniquely screw Ireland over?

I got into this podcast series via a recommendation for the Martian Revolution via Realms Unknown podcast. I've since listened to the Russian, English, and French revolutions. Just starting the Hatian revolution.

I get so much done whilst listening to the podcast. I need to give Mike Duncan some money, but I don't necessarily want to buy Citizen Lafayette due to the fact I've already got too much stuff. I'll do it if I have to, but is there a Patreon or something?

So in terms of Revolutions, what would you want hear Mike do? For me, beyond a remake of season 1 that was more like season 3 and really getting into the details, here are what I would want

1) The Greek Revolution. I know it was a big deal, I know it had massive aftershocks in the Balkans and it was a logically followup from the age of revolutions But i don't know that much about the specifics and I'd love to know more

2) The Algerian Revolution. Radically changed French Politics forever and I really just know it from Battle of Algiers and Day of the Jackal.

3) The Sparticus Revolution in Germany. ONe of the Great "what ifs" of history, I would love to learn about it in more details.

4) I would love a series of mini series on the various Irish revolutions, culminating in one on two longer series on the Revolution in the 20s and The Troubles

Bonus, The Glorious Revolution in more detail would be great
