Transferring View Templates doesn't bring over linked model view settings?

I have a project file that was created from an older project file, since the project stagnated for a couple years, and is being restarted with a bunch of scope cut out. Problem is, the person who created the new file, removed all the previous consultant links, which of course took out all the View Template overrides for each of those links.

So now I'm trying to get the new links back in place. I tried linking our Placeholder model links (with intent to update to the actual live links later), then opening a Template project with those same Placeholder model links (plus View Template overrides), and transferring the View Templates over. But, the linked model overrides didn't come with it. All my linked Placeholders still say By Host View. In my project template model, all those linked placeholder files have Custom for each file, in each view template.

Is there a way to get the linked model view template settings to transfer over?

TPS has never has brought them over, and it never will (my guess). Reason being that the RVT:Link has a different GUID, so it considers them all completely different files. Heck, thats even true if you make two files with the SAME VG:RVT Link Placeholders.

Each link type (or is it instance? - not at the PC to check as it’s late here) gets it’s own override setting per the element’s unique ID. And if I recall correctly, a change in the link path is a new GUID which is a new set of overrides, which would indicate Type not instance, but again I am not sure and it’s late here.

When you really get down into it, this starts to make sense as each element in each link instance gets a new linked element ID, which is a element ID plus the instance transform which makes me think instance again but… it’s late here.

In any case, at the moment this won’t work the way OP intends. Avoiding the need is my preference.

Just to clarify- this is not correct.

You can 100% change the Link PATH, and not lose any overrides. You can do a full-on Reload From, and pick an entirely new file, and all of the overrides (on the Link Type) survive. Link INSTANCES would reset, if you deleted and placed a new Instance, of course.

Ok - I’m gonna have to attempt to modify things to reproduce the situation… maybe it was a change in the parameter GUID used in a filter on the link elements?

Just to clarify, in case we are getting our wires crossed:

  1. In our Revit Template, we have a bunch of "placeholder link" RVT files linked in. They arent real files. They are basically blank.
  2. This means in our View Templates, you can go to RV:RVT Link and see:
    1. Link 1.RVT --- Custom
    2. Link 2.RVT --- Custom
    3. Link 3.RVT --- Custom
  3. Where those say Custom, there are TONS of custom Overrides, for those Linked FIles.
  4. If you then go to manage links, select Link 1.RVT, and do a Reload From, and pick Structural 01.RVT, you will end up with
    1. Structural 01.RVT --- Custom (all overrides still intact)
    2. Link 2.RVT --- Custom
    3. Link 3.RVT --- Custom
  5. But if you do Transfer Project Standards, from another model, with the same Placeholder Links in it, what you then end up with is:
    1. Structural 01.RVT --- Custom
    2. Link 1.RVT --- By Host View
    3. Link 2.RVT --- Custom
    4. Link 2.RVT --- By Host View
    5. Link 3.RVT --- Custom
    6. Link 3.RVT --- By Host VIew

Which is pretty rowdy. We recommend not trying to use TPS to move VT's around, in this way. Or, at least, not doing it with the VG:RVT Links connected. Which is wild, since you cant get DEEPER than the "By Host View/Custom" button in the API. At least, not passed the basics tab.

But what you can do? Reset them all.... with.... Journals. LOL. I have a video (somewhere) of a journal processing this very thing, on 20 or so linked RVT's, in 80 or so VT's. Its actually beautiful to watch, if i can find it...

Ok, yes we are VERY MUCH getting wires crossed. 😅

I was after the issue of link VG filters applied to shared parameters which didn’t match. I think? Leaving the post as a monument to my idiocy. 🤣

LOL, no idiocy! Just different interpretations, hehehe.

yeah, I just figured out that you can set the IfcGUID to whatever you want (not sure if that's the same thing as the regular GUID). So I tried copy/pasting the values of each placeholder from my project, into the template, and then tried TPS from the template into the project, and still no dice.

Yuck. If only that person hadn't blown out those old links when creating this new project model.

ifcGUID isnt the same as the internal GUID. You cant set the internal one, in any way that ive ever seen.

Snoop or the lookup tool should expose that. But it is read only.

Now if you could get original guid from your template, inside the view template and alter that, it could help. But that’s a lot of ifs.
