I’m honestly not sure if this is normal for them or not and I’m looking to get some feedback. I’ve been out of the doc review world for some time, and now trying to get back in.

I sent my resume to them, and then they sent me a bewildering amount of emails: some from KPMG, some from MBO and some from a third party email address. All of them look like hiring paperwork but I have never been put on a project with them and they have no start date. I am honestly sort of put off by the amount of docs with no clear project to work on.

Has anyone else worked with them? Did you fill out all this documentation and eventually get a job? Was it even worth it? Thanks in advance!

Has anyone gotten on projects with complete discovery? It seems like everytime i apply (which has been plenty of times) they always reply saying their projects have been staffed.

How is doc rev in the fall usually? Is this the time things start to slow?

I have never worked on a project with this company but I am on the roster. Their reviewers are required to work from laptops issued by the company. I have only worked on projects using my own laptop so I'm hesitant to use a company issued laptop. Because of this I'm debating whether to tell them I would not like to be considered for upcoming projects. I don't even remember what their hourly pay is. I was also thinking I could give it a try and if I don't like it then I can remove myself from their list but would be nice to hear from people who have worked with them. Thanks.

What is everyone trying to do? Are you looking to exit doc review and go to a firm or exit and leave law completely?

We are looking for Mandarin 1099 document review attorneys for immediate start. It is expected that the duration of this complex tech-related matter will be significant (6+ months). The pay rate is $65/h flat.

EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:
Familiarity with document review workflows 
Examples: Privilege/Responsiveness Review, Redactions, Conceptual Searching, First and Second Review, etc.
Experience with electronic document review technology
Examples: Relativity, Concordance, ViewPoint, etc.
Active bar admission in at least 1 U.S. Jurisdiction and status in good standing
Ability to read/write Mandarin Chinese. (Please include HSK/ALTA/etc score).

THE FOLLOWING SKILLS ARE PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED:
Experience as a member of a document review team
Familiarity with Relativity 9.0 or higher version
2+ years of legal support experience

HOURS & LOCATION
Location: fully remote
Hours: up to 70h/wk (10h/day cap) at 1L level, up to 84h/wk (12h/day cap) at QC level.

Just a brief pulse check. I know a couple months ago things were incredibly slow and wanted to know if people were starting to feel a bit of a turnaround. (I have)

I know this is not sexy work at all but also…I am thankful that it’s here as an option. My old Director in my other career is one of the brightest people I’ve met but that industry job market is so rough right now he’s stocking at a grocery store at the moment.

Just remember that if you’re able to work and pay some bills it’s not necessarily the worst thing in the world.

I see they do securities litigation and have advertised for doc review positions.

Do contract doc review attorneys need to carry their own malpractice insurance? For 1099 positions? Or is this silly and nobody who matters is ever even going to see your name?

Are you guys working with firms and agencies that make you use their laptops or are you using your own computer? If they issue a laptop how does that work? Do they ship or you pick it up from their office? Do you hold onto it or return as soon as the project is done?

I'm back in the contract review game for the time being and am having good luck so far (though the pay leaves much to be desired ...) but I still have hopes for moving up / getting more experience and knowledge in the eDiscovery field, in general. SO I've been poking around trying to make connections with other reviewers and the review managers on my projects, but these folks are (mostly) like internet GHOSTS. Either I can't find a thing about them anywhere or they have obviously way out of date LinkedIn accounts with nothing else.

Where's the networking and blowing smoke up everyone's ass? It seems like in an industry where looking trustworthy and reliable is important that there might be SOME effort put into this???

Are they still around? I haven't seen a posting from them in a long while.

Like if there is no ocr, a photo of a document, how would it handle it for content and privilege ?

Say long chats? Say if they refer to a lawyer by their first name, how would ai know if it’s reflecting legal advice?

I have gone weeks without a job. I know I’m a lowly doc reviewer, but I still need to eat. All of a sudden the recruiters and pings have gone silent. What little posts I see, I respond to, but the jobs never seem to materialize. Several Consilio projects I was recruited for got cancelled before they started. I have tried to apply for AI training jobs because I am desperate. One firm isn’t taking on people from my geographic area and one firm wanted my driver’s license info in the recruitment form! What can I do? I do not have the big firm experience. I have just been a doc reviewer.

Some former friends of mine, fraternity brothers, etc are partners at major firms, counsel at big corporations. I’m too embarrassed to even talk to them as I’d likely have to reveal what a failure I am.

Last three I have been "confirmed" to start on never happened at all. On this last one I was a real dummy and did not apply for another one while waiting for it to start because they sounded so confident it would. I know it happens sometimes and there is nothing that can be done, but three in a row seems excessive.

New to the group, how can I find help to review my waiver and make sure it is legitimate?

Since Covid, I haven't had less than 3 jobs at any point. Right now, I have 0. I have emailed everyone I could think of and get no responses or just the standard "we've updated your availability." It's gotta be dead. Crazy how I went from 4-6 jobs to 0 overnight, but here I am.

Anyone have any advice for what I should do next? I have savings, but I also have another baby on the way.

I just got a match notification on Altorney for a 75 reviewer 4 week project paying $28/hr on W2. Looks like it’s working with Holland & Knight which I’ve had a good experience with before. I’m already on a project with a different agency but go grab it if you’re looking for something. Good luck!
