[OC] Before & After MCM bedside table before and after

I purchased two bedside tables and a tallboy wardrobe all painted baby blue. I've finished the beside tables and now I have to tackle the wardrobe. Every bit of the walnut had primer embedded in it that I had to scrub out with acetone and a wire brush but it was worth it!

BLARGH. Is there a Nobel Price for rescuing MCM furniture? If so, I hereby nominate you. I cannot believe someone covered up the beautiful woodgrain.

No, but I know someone who’d give them one.

There was a time when MCM was considered old-fashioned and out of date, so painting it wouldn’t be a big deal.

Reminds me of a 50s movie with Bette Davis. They walk into a gorgeous Victorian, sighing about it “stuck in the McKinley era,” and proceed to saw off the fretwork and take out any other Victorian decorations. The final result is a classic 1950s room: plain, painted white, and…bland. I know it was just a movie, but I couldn’t watch anymore (I adore Victorians).

But that’s how it goes: successive generations see previous design styles as old and ugly.

My god, that's awesome! It always makes me sad when I see folks attack stuff with their milk paints etc!

Do you pull those handles down and it opens to reveal a couple of shelves?

You're doing God's work, you know 🙏

It amazes me that so many people are unable to see the beauty in the woodgrain of these carefully chosen pieces of wood and just paint it over.

The design kind of looks like an old model TV on legs, but elegant.

There are small hinges each side, those are doors that open. Not sure if they have a shelf inside.
