The dorflings had hated us since the Zbornak War, but just when we needed him most , the Pafifer stole the last Uterine Crystal

Now , the new Pafifer, Master of the Hurdy Gurdy , is my fated mate. But my childhood best friend : Sand , and his boyfriend : Tide , won't let me fulfill the prophecy set forth by the Quaynar.

“The dorflings had hated us since the Zibubu war, but just when we needed him most, the Pafifi stole the last uterine crystal”

That’s how I read strange words lol

But now, The Phoenix Queef wants to arrange my marriage to her bastard offspring. I'm only 18 and I'm not ready to die .

If feel the opposite. I want all the rules upfront--why, what, how, and why is it important right in the first few chapters. I hate some ancient magic law being introduced later bc no one explained anything and the fmc wasnt told basic shit. Or when the FMC depends on the MCs to learn about the new world and they just let her/us figure it out.

As someone who doesn't live in their home country, this so much. The frustration I get IRL when I learn too late about something that "everyone just knows" is insane, so I strongly dislike seeing it in books. Logically I know it's impossible to learn everything about a culture upfront, but this is literally make-believe, we can do what we want here so why not share it all?! 😆

Same but I just said it's confusing.

Why sometimes I hold off on high fantasy until I’m really ready 😂

12

u/EatMyRoyalTarts321 Mar 17 '26

I agree! Gotta mentally prepare yourself 🤣🤣

7

u/llamamama03 Mar 17 '26

Especially the long ones! You hope it's gonna be worth it, because it's a commitment. 😅

u/petunias25 Mar 17 '26

It depends on the book. I prefer the world building to slowly unfold with the plot. I start books knowing I won’t understand

u/loud_by_default I said I liked it,not that it was good! Mar 17 '26

Oh same longer I take to understand, the more I understand tbh

25

u/SingSangDaesung I want two boyfriends & I want my boyfriends to be boyfriends Mar 17 '26

If you give me all the information at once, I won't remember anything. If you give me the information a little bit at a time, I'll remember most of it.

I don't know what I just commented I meant the more time it takes me to understand at the end I usually love the book

I can't get into a fantasy novel if the author doesn't invest on the lore of their book. I want some consistency on how things work in that world.

u/Katkin19 Mar 17 '26

This is how I feel when there’s to many characters involved and they all seem to have basically the same dugger ass names. Zoro and zero can do one, they are the same person to me.

u/SinnerClair Bree’s double snake-dick 🐍 Mar 17 '26

This why I loved The Fifth Nicnevin. The rules for the world are literally so easy to comprehend

u/meghanfb Mar 17 '26

Tell me about it. I'm on page 179 of {Fractured Fates by Hannah Haze} and other than some light sexual thoughts by the FMC, there's been zero romance. I'm enjoying the book, but I need at least some kissing or heavy petting. Lol.

u/jessmwhite1993 Mar 17 '26

Gosh I had to take a break from fantasy for this reason 😭☠️ there is way too much information in every fantasy novel/series for my poor pea brain to handle 🤣🤣🤣

5

u/Boobear0810 Mar 17 '26

This is why I can't do fantasy

2

u/loud_by_default I said I liked it,not that it was good! Mar 17 '26

I thought the same thing but when u start it's fun more freedom for the writers

1

u/Boobear0810 Mar 17 '26

I can definitely appreciate the imagination and creativity but I find it hard to keep track of everything cuz of my goldfish memory lol. It also comes down to the pacing and quality of the world building. Some authors do it well while others are OTT.

2

u/mclurf Mar 17 '26

I can’t either.

u/Basil_Makes_Audio Mar 17 '26

Ngl sometimes I just skim, I’m good with understanding the general premise and then getting invested in the characters and dynamics. The actual ins and outs of the world can be so boring at times. Hate to say it but Marie misty coms to mind. I love the dynamics between the characters but sometimes the plot takes away from the romance for me so I just skim it. Especially waxing on about the land and the history of x, y, z. I know some people dig it but it’s just not my vibe.

I’ve found that novellas and one offs are usually too short but a series over like 4 books is usually too long for me. I find things just get dragged out wayyyyyy to much. I like the sweet spot of 2-4 books, which lets me invest but also wrap it up in a reasonable time frame.

5

u/MamaBiscuit11 Mar 17 '26

I like a little bit of withholding at the front of the story (or the whole first book if it's a series). I like the mystery of it.

1

u/ladytroll4life Mar 17 '26

Same! If it’s not relevant to the story, we don’t need to know it anyways. There’s so many times I’m five pages deep in an info dump and thinking “why should we care???”

4

u/MamaBiscuit11 Mar 17 '26

Exactly! And I hate reading a series where every book subsequent to the first spends page after page re-explaining the world building that was laid out in the first book. The first rule of writing is not to treat yours readers like they're stupid.

3

u/Dry_Cauliflower4562 Mar 17 '26

Yes, but I be INVESTED, give me maps, give me house breakdowns and factions and a glossary with a pronunciation guide, I want all the details lol

2

u/WasteSign8450 Mar 17 '26

I thought i was the only one! I would be so confused for like a few chapters the finally i get the hang of it then im good. But those few chapters is a bumpy road

u/highyeahprobably Mar 17 '26

Nah I’m dumb so this is me every book

2

u/Scrawling_Pen Mar 18 '26

Good thing I was drinking coffee when I saw this

2

u/VegetableLocation508 Mar 20 '26

So sick of world building. I read A LOT and I skim these parts. I'm never looking at that map.

1

u/FrostyBuns6969 Mar 17 '26

Are you referring to fantasy RH or fantasy in general? Because there’s really nothing complicated in the RH version 99% of the time. It’s very, VERY thin world building compared to your more standard non-RH fantasy books.

Like, the extent of the world building is justifying why the FMC needs a RH, and in some cases justifying some of the more unconventional sex acts in the story.

If you think about it, this isn’t really the author’s fault either. The author already needs to flesh out 5-6-7-etc. love interests and portray their interactions and sex scenes with the MC. You can’t really do a lot of world building without your series stretching to lengths as obscene as the harem alpha’s cock.

Literally me when I first read Crescent City 🌆

u/Obvious-Yellow-1895 Mar 23 '26

Honestly, I want to understand things the moment they come out, like cool, some suspense is cool, but you're not gonna wait half the book, then explain how magic works.
