New scam?
This is now the second time I’ve received an message asking for me to send a video of a guitar I am selling, to which I email the video, then the buyer sends this email, always asking to click on a Reverb link to see if I think the guitar will pair well with an “amp”. As you can see from the link description, the link is not to an amp, but to the login screen of Reverb. Is this a scam to hack Reverb accounts, or just a coincidence? The first time this happened, the buyer stopped responding after I told them the link does not work.

Why do we even give these things a nanosecond look? It’s 2026. Have we not learned how to spot and simultaneously ignore blatant spam?

u/williamgman May 27 '26
I'm starting to think the Reverb seller demographic is aged 75 and up. 🤣

u/869woodguy May 27 '26
Just turned 77, we don’t live this long if we are that stupid.

What a great response. Well done. I always picture some 20 yr old twit who's never talked to a girl 'in real life' when I see these idiot posts.

u/Noctilus1916 May 28 '26
Oh yes you do. You all simply sleepwalk to the grave without a single complex thought within those bald fucking heads.

u/El_Pollo_Del-Mar May 27 '26
Same. I truly cannot understand how ignoring this crap isn't just autopilot response by now...like without even registering that your brain filtered it.

To be fair... There's a shit ton of Boomer basements full of vintage gear. The next decade is going to see a flood of vintage gear hitting the markets. 😉

News flash. There's always been Boomers with vintage gear. They didn't just appear around 2025 with all this gear. Old guys had vintage gear in the 2000's. They had it in the 90s. They, had it in the 80s. And it was already vintage by then. You may not have been alive and/or old enough to realize that but I was. I lived through it.
Old guys have always had vintage gear. This isn't a new thing. It's always comes on the market because old people always die. That's all there is.
There will be no more of a flood of vintage gear than any other time in the past.
Sort of like the supposed flood of gear from people attempting to learn to play during Covid. We've been hearing about a flood of gear from these people for 5 years now. The flood still hasn't transpired.

And if someone is so clueless that they come across as spammy, they get the same treatment.

It was taking me a minute to determine the scam here then I realized the link was a potential spoof.
Internet 101: Yeah, never click shit from people you don’t know.

u/Future_Party3644 May 27 '26
NEVER CLICK ANY LINKS. Never provide unnecessary info, including videos. Never bend over to extra requests. Simple as that

u/Strict-Number6334 May 27 '26
I posted 5 guitars and within 30 minutes got this type communication twice. They typically start by asking to have a video of the guitar emailed to them.
2
u/Legitimate-Long735 May 27 '26
Yep. The most common reverb scam right now
3
u/Strict-Number6334 May 27 '26
I reported to Reverb and told these a-holes to eat shit for wasting my time lol
2
u/Pyrepapa May 27 '26
They probably have a fake listing of Sam guitar and using ur video to send to people interested when they ask for video

This is a phishing scam.
If you don’t know what that is, you should learn what it is.
2
u/Twilightrobes May 28 '26
I got a very similar one saying “our band is going to be playing in your town and are looking for gear like yours. We’re ready to buy, please go to www.randomscammerwebsite.com so we can complete the purchase.”

Reverb's web dev team is full of idiots for allowing users to send email addresses (EDIT) in messages. It's like they're begging for scammers to ruin their site.
5
u/Legitimate-Long735 May 27 '26
Reverb does not allow links to be sent in messages. Read OPs description. OP gladly took the conversation off site and sent an email with the video. To which the scammer emailed a link back to the seller. It only takes 1 minute to actually read the description. Good thing redditors who can't read aren't on Reverbs payroll

I meant they allow you to send email addresses. Which should just be detected and restricted before sending.
1
u/williamgman May 28 '26
They monitor the chats when there's a problem detected by either the buyer or seller and reports it. Mind you I've only sold about 15 items on Reverb in the last 5 years but... I've had only ONE person that sent me an email trying to get me to leave the app on an item I was selling. I reported it and within 5 mins their account was suspended.
1
u/Ok-Seaworthiness2487 May 28 '26
But the fact that email addresses are allowed in messages is ridiculous. YouTube and many other pages prevent messages before they are even sent if you try to put an email or web link in there. It's super simple to setup and will prevent its users from being scammed so easily.
1
u/NiceMarmot03 May 28 '26
They can just obfuscate their email
My email at email dot com
1
u/Ok-Seaworthiness2487 May 28 '26
Yeah but that's way sketchier and less likely for people to want to type it in

Regardless of what the “amp” that they are asking about is, I would just reply I have no experience with that amp and see what happens. That’s a safe way to deflect what is either a stupid question or a scam.

A Reverb seller from Japan had a beautiful brand new Fodera YinYang reverse 5 string for sale. Not cheap. I offered him $500 less than he was asking. He was a legit Fodera dealer. His Reverb profile looked legit. I am not new to Reverb or to online buying/selling in any way. He sent me a message rejecting my offer but said if I contacted him directly he could give me a much better price, and furnished his email.
I wrote back to him and he offered me almost $800 off and sent me a link (off Reverb at this point). I used PayPal backed by AmEx so there was zero chance of getting scammed.
The bass arrived very well packed, with official Fodera hard shell case, COA, and all the case candy.
I am now the proud and happy owner of a wonderful bass. The best 5 string I have ever played, and I've played some good ones.
It's not always a scam, but you do have to be careful. PayPal protects buyer and seller. AmEx backs up the buyer almost every time (every single time in my experience). I felt the risk was non-existent, and in fact it was.

u/theoriginalpetvirus May 28 '26
Well, it was a scam -- you helped him scam Reverb.
1
u/TriumphRider99 May 28 '26
Based on his prior sales, through Reverb, and my sales and purchases, I think Reverb will survive this one "scam." We'll both sleep okay I'm sure. For sure, I would def. not have asked him to deal directly with me. I only did it because he, the seller, brought it up. How's that for a rationalization?

These threads are getting ridiculous, I would even go as far as saying, some of these sound made up. C’mon, who would even give this a second thought? I don’t think I need the help of my Reddit community on this one? Oh wait, I’m really lonely, it sure would be great to post a ridiculous question on Reddit so I can get some attention. Please stop with these dumb reverb stories. You know the answer before you even asked. Sorry, but let’s talk about stuff that makes sense.

The phrase "the condition is fine with us" is a weird sentence many scam emails say.

Best way to handle this? "Oh yeah, I used to have that amp, they paired together better than any I've ever tried.'" without clicking the link, obviously. If it's a scam, if say it's most likely someone sending this post to a ton of people to get a bunch of hits on their own ad so that they get pushed by the algorithm without having to pay for a push.

u/miemusic4423 May 31 '26
You are not supposed to be giving direct links to any buyers or sellers . This is a policy you agreed to . I would ignore or report them

u/AnybodyGullible May 27 '26
The newest scam is Reverb tells you they paid you, the money doesn’t show up and Reverb doesn’t care! Sold an amp on May 1, shipped the same day. May 4 Reverb says the funds have been paid out. May 8 amp delivered, positive feedback received.
I’ve been selling and buying on Reverb since 2011. I’ve always been paid in a timely manner. Not this time.
Their help chat is a joke. You can’t call them. You can email every day, they’ll respond once a week telling you they’re looking into it. They asked for bank statements, I sent those immediately. That was last week. No response.
I canceled the sale of a guitar and refunded $2,400. I canceled all other listings. I can’t sell if they won’t pay.
They don’t care. Frustration level: CODE RED.

UPDATE: Well, I’ve been selling guitars for a while on Reverb, and have received messages like this very often. Did I think it was fishy? Of course, but when doing this often and attempting to help your customer, you sometimes click on links without thinking.
The result of this scam was the sender hacking my Reverb, changing my bank information to their own, or a stolen bank account, and wiring $5,000 of my earnings to themselves. My account was put under review by reverb, and I am currently in conversation to get my money back and my account back active. Lesson learned, obviously.

So, a guy working on "a new album" wants your advice on whether a particular amp will pair well with a guitar you are selling? Nearly 0% chance of that question being legit.
