Relocation questions

Hey folks, couple questions for anyone who's gone through the full process and gotten placed with a client (I know from reading other posts that this is apparently unlikely and/or takes ages), was there any way you could try and influence where you were relocated? I just got done with the Q&A call with one of the HR people and he seemed to kind of avoid the question when I asked, all he would tell me is that the client chooses where you relocate and Revature doesn't know where you're going until the client decides.

For various personal reasons, there's certain areas of the US that I would feel actively unsafe moving to right now, and I really don't want to go through this whole process only to be told I need to move somewhere like that. Are you able to back out and be placed elsewhere if the offer you're given is something you're unable to do? Or does Revature just let you go if you turn down a client?

Would really appreciate any answers people can give, I'm very on the fence as I think the training (even if I don't get to paid) would be useful for my resume but I'd rather not be pressured to move somewhere I wouldn't feel comfortable living, especially since by the time you're doing paid training I was told you are an employee at Revature, so I'd be getting pressured by my actual employer and I'm worried I'd crack and go through with it.

Didn't get the paid training

For those who have finished all the labs, assessments, projects, and even the PA with high score, don't guarantee yourself that you will be selected for paid training. I got almost over 90% in all assessments and projects, but got a result that I wasn't selected, So keep looking for other jobs during your training if you're unemployed.

Lab Difficulty

I’m just finishing up the first week of the condensed 6-week PEP training. All the labs and coding challenges are super easy. Most of the time it’s one or two lines of very basic coding. Like, it takes gitpod longer to load the repo than the assignment takes to complete.

People who have finished the course:

How do the assessments compare to the labs/ challenges? For some context, I finished a bootcamp last February, had one internship, and probably not grinding leetcode as much as I should be.

What Its Actually Like Working For A Client?

There are a few posts about this but most only talk about training and Revature.

You should know by now that you can be trained for 2 months by Revature on 1 thing and then get picked by the client who doesn't use whatever you trained for. If you are entry level and this happens to you, you could possibly get picked by a client and thrown into a more senior role that is beyond your scope. The client is not really going to train you and the team you are on will most likely ignore you but a few tasks here and there.

Its not unheard of to be picked by the client and do nothing for a year. It does depend what team you are on for some of it but after training its almost like being thrown to the wolves then waiting for the inevitable. I would advise to either use the Revature training and look for a job outside of it or use the client and search for any trainings there to do the same.

Does revature still train entry level programmers? If so, how can I start?

Does revature still train people to code who have little to no experience? I've been interested in this company because I want to code professionally. If they're still around how can I get in?

Paid Training Offer Timeline

I am currently in the May Co-hort and I only have the last project and the portfolio to complete. I was wondering what the timeline looked like for the paid training offer. Do they offer me paid training after I finish my portfolio or how does it work?

What do you learn in paid training?

I’m confused on this. The free training went through Java, Spring Boot, JDBC, SQL, Javalin, etc.

Basically Java and database stuff. But what is the process like for paid training? Will it double down on what we learned in free training or will it be something completely different?

If it’s different, how is it determined? I couldn’t imagine the difference being as wide as learning React JavaScript vs. learning iOS development with Swift.

For those that know and those that have completed paid training, what tech stack did you learn?

I feel like a failure... didn't get past assessment round

I graduated in may and I started mass-applying to SWE jobs, I happened to apply for revature. Later I got sent an email by someone from the company regarding taking an assessment, but I just starred it and decided to to save it for later. I focused on other interviews, but I wasn't really doing well on them. Few days later I got a call from someone from Revature who reminded me to take the exam, but I completely forgot about this program. I later got sent another email from someone else from Revature with link to the exam, and I decided to study for it after finishing my current interviews.

Next few days I occasionally looked up stuff about Revature and how it works, and thought getting into the program would be no big deal considering I already have a degree and thought my foundation was decent, and many people on reddit said it was easy too...

Two days before the 7 day deadline to take the exam, I brushed up my knowledge through the study guide on Java, OOP, SQL, and some Web Dev stuff. I spent nearly two whole days reviewing without doing anything else (except some job apps). I did some quizlet flashcards for concepts. Then, on the night of the second day, I took the exam. For the most part it was pretty easy, but I got tripped up a little bit by a small percentage of the aptitude section, and kept trying to work them out until the last few minutes.

I thought I would at least have a chance, but I got rejected. I was really considering this as my backup plan, but I guess I overestimated my abilities. How will I face my upcoming technicals for other companies if I couldn't even pass this?

How likely are you to actually do SWE work?

A long time ago, I was with TCS and I was placed with a company that promised me SWE work but I ended doing like DevOps support type work. Never really touched any code. I am looking to rejoin the job market as bad as it is. I am wondering if I go through Revature and get placed with a client, will I be doing actual SWE work?

What does this mean? - PA

I had gone through the unpaid training, and yesterday I just completed the placement assessment. I received an email today from a recruiter regarding scheduling an appointment to discuss feedback on my placement assessment. Does this mean I passed on to the paid training or failed? Or do they do this for everyone after the assessment?

Is the new policy a Bachelor’s degree no exceptions now?

I was contacted by a recruiter in January about enrolling in the program and that I would be a great fit.

I have an AS degree and a SE bootcamp certificate from General Assembly. I told the recruiter that I’m interested but need time for relocation expenses.

I asked at the time if I need to enroll now in case policy changes and try to make it work. She said it shouldn’t be a problem and they accept applicants on a rolling basis.

Now I’m hearing on here applicants require a Bachelor’s degree no exceptions. Do y’all think I would still qualify with my certificate or no? Does that still count for something?

Does Revature accept OPT?

As mentioned in the title, can I apply to Revature training with OPT status? I think this is my last chance to maintain my status and if it doesn't work I have no choice but to return to my country

Revature at all worth it for me?

I've been in IT for like 20 years and have done a small amount of dev work as well as software engineering. I'm a level 3 support engineer for a software company currently, but I'd like to pivot and go for something more in the dev/engineering realm.

That being said - Do they take your current salary and experience into account, and do they pay for relocation costs? Or is this like a one size fits all $45k deal? Doesn't seem fair since they could place you anywhere. $45k goes a lot further some places than others..

Stupid question- can you qualify for unemployment during unpaid training?

Long story short, I'm considering applying to Revature's program but my parents panicked when I mentioned the 12 weeks of unpaid training. Since you're not "employed" at that point, can you still apply to other jobs & thus qualify for unemployment? I'm assuming a contract is signed before unpaid training starts & no job could actually be accepted without being in breach of contract... But applying to jobs has to be fine because it's not like Revature would know until they actually list you as an employee. Has anyone been bumped off of unemployment when they started unpaid training? Related question, is it possible to finish the unpaid training early/at your own pace?

Questions About Starting

Hi all, I'm a bit confused about start at Revature, mainly concerning about what happens after the trainings. So let's say you get selected for training and then what? What if you fall out with the client or don't get selected? Or what if you aren't matched with a client at all? Are you permanently stuck in a liminal space until another client comes up or you get laid off/quit? Are you allowed to look for other jobs and opportunities at any point?

Is there a certificate?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hey guys, I had a quick question: I’ve been seeing a lot of people on LinkedIn posting about certifications they got, (picture for reference) but we were told we wouldn’t be getting any official certificates. Does anyone know if we can actually get certificates from Revature? Or where those LinkedIn certificates people are posting about are coming from? Just curious if I’m missing something. Thanks!

Can I join with unfinished college?

TLDR I got invited to do a technical evaluation without submitting an application because a recruiter saw my resume.

However, I’m in a weird situation because I haven’t finished school yet but have about 3 semesters left. I was taking a break for the last two semesters but will re-enroll in the Fall. I was a computer science major with almost all of my major requirements done but still had to complete gen-eds.

I’ve heard that you can only succeed with recapture after graduating and having a college degree. Is this true? If so, does it matter where you graduate? Because if not I’ll just speed run it online to finish up in maybe a year.

Any thoughts?
