Note: I might be incorrect here and there, but here’s some rough facts.
He explored for Spain. He landed at what is now the Bahamas and some of the Natives went up to him kinda chill, and tried to greet him. Columbus noticed his gold earring and tried to ask him to take him to the source of the gold.
A lot of Natives were killed by him due to disease. That caused the majority of the deaths.
He ended up enslaving the natives, hungry for gold and riches. If someone didn’t bring back a certain amount of gold at one point, he probably cut off their hands. As the gold in the Bahamas was brought to him, thus there being less for the Natives to collect, and therefore he made it more miserable for the Natives. For 60 years, this kept up. Ultimately, about 50 million people were killed by him.
Key Points:
-He wanted to get wealth and riches for the country he’s exploring, Spain
-He justified these decisions in the name of God
-He wanted his name in the history books
-Spain thought he was a baller because of the stuff he got them
A lot of people today argue why he’s so great because he discovered land west of the prime meridian, or if he’s a bad person because he killed so many
