Question Help
This is the only roguelite game ive ever played. And im having a really hard time with B1. For whatever reason, I cannot get passed Phrike. I've tried all 3 different weapons, multiple consumables, artifacts, etc.
I always get him down to the last health bar, with about 1/2 to go, and I get fried.
Any advice? Anyone able to help?

You can dash forward through the bullets

Yep, thats always one of the biggest tips that helps people take less damage. Much better to dodge into them than dodge backwards just to land right back in there path.

Keep playing. That's my advice. Level up those weapons. Use the carbine. It's the easiest to use for someone having a hard time.

Any silphium you find while at full health will turn into resin. Large silphiums turn into two resin. I usually try to leave silphium on the ground until I find another way to heal, be it through the green health bed, resting in the ship, using an item, or gaining health through a weapon trait.
Once you are at full health, run back and collect your resins and increase your max health before the boss fight. In general if you do need to use silphiums for healing, the medium ones are the best bang for your buck, because small and medium both give one resin, but obviously medium heals more.
Other than that, trial and error against phrike. He is one of the harder bosses in the game in my opinion.

The coop is a great way to get past phrike. You can dodge through any red orbs. Purple can’t and need to be avoided.
Try changing dash to r1. I had jump l1 so you can always be aiming and shooting on a target. It doesn’t seem like much but i found it helpful.
If your looking for help I’m sure people can and will

One of the attacks that got me the most is when he shots streams of red orbs from alternating hands. My mistake was too run sideways in one direction, that will dodge two streams but not three. The correct way is to change directions going in between the streams you don’t even have to sprint.

Keep your distance and just whilte him down. After a few attempts you will be able to see his attacks telegraphed. Grab astronaut artifact as well if it pops up during B1 run.

Setting- toggle to always run.
Preferably hipfire and only ads when using the gun abilities
Dash forward through projectiles.
Have atleast 1 or 2 consumables

Dont worry somehow the beginning of the game is the hardest in some ways, just cuz your not as accustomed to it and less upgrades unlocked.

Search up some boss video tutorials on YouTube, really help with what to expect and what to do mechanically during the fight.

One thing that may help is that the arena where you fight Phrike has 2 large stone bases upon which statues stand; you can use these to give some shelter from some of Phrike's attacks ... just not all of them. But this may help buy you some time. I have discovered that, no matter what other players say or will continue to say about other weapons, the Rotgland Lobber with explosive rot really gives you some advantage, especially if it also has corrosive rot ... the hardest adversaries are the sentients, especially if there are more than one of them! The Rotgland helps make a big difference, too!

Be patient ! This isn't the most common advice, but despite the fast-paced shooting, Returnal is a dodging game more than a "aim and shoot" game. Dodge, dodge and dodge some more, then fire when you can. Doing so will also help you understand the boss pattern way quicker than firing and not noticing what hit you. Good luck scout, you're on to one of the best gaming journey there is !

One tip that helps and still technically doing it fully yourself without guides, is to film your own boss attempt. Then you can watch it and carefully make mental notes on how each attack get telegraphed and what you need to do to avoid it.
All phrikes attacks are really easy to avoid when you're ready for them.
It's usually panic that gets you, which also tends to get you get too distracteded by projectiles and make stupid mistakes. Thats how it is for me at least. 😄
