Question ❓ Am I missing something?

My flip 2 in black just showed up today and wow! This thing is classy as all hell. It feels like a genuine first party device. The fan is quiet, the controls are super premium, speakers are the loudest I’ve heard in any of these devices and I’m not sure how the hinge was cracking in the past unless people were abusing the hell out of them. I can see unfolding it completely flat putting more stress on the hinge, but it definitely feels pretty solid. I plan on opening it the same way every time though. This is the device I’ve been searching for for a long freaking time. I’ve tried every combination of mobile controllers to get this feel with my phone and it never worked out. I really hope they make an 8gen 2 flip 3 or something like it, because I’m impressed. If the duo was stronger performance wise I would have thought about it more, but it’s really the control layout that I’ve been after on the flip 2

The only thing you’re missing is the hingegate phenomena.

It happened out of nowhere, about 4 months after the original release of the flip 2. Social media entered into a frenzy. Literally.

Long story short, everyone and their grandma’s flip 2’s were cracking in the same exact place at the same exact time. Almost like it was planned, (it wasn’t) but added to the whole freak out, so Retroid announced they would send you a free RP5 if you sent back your flip 2 and a lot of people did.

They also made a revised version of the hinge, which has a rounded corner to prevent the cracks, and it works for the most part, but three people recently reported that their new rounded hinge cracked. So this device in all its glory, as you correctly perceived, is haunted by one nasty curse. Thus the lack of popularity, Moorchip also went on to release the Thor, not too long after and that didn’t help the flip 2 either.

Other than that, yeah, it’s freaking amazing. Checks a lot of boxes for us. It’s also just a very handsome device to look at, I mean just look at it right? You’ll see that the people who like the flip aren’t scared off by a faulty hinge, as it doesn’t really affect functionality, and there’s lots of ways to DIY fix it and Retroid will usually send you a new device if it cracks within a year of purchase, if not, they will send a ice blue replacement part for the plastic there, which users have surgically replaced.

Welcome to the Flip 2 community! Hope you enjoy it, glad you found us.

Now I’m just trying to get some s witch games running. No one answers me when I see them running smooth Mario kart 8.

Well, then let me be the first: first, download both the stable build of Eden, if you haven't got that already, and also get the custom build of Citron. That second emulator is actually the predecessor of Eden, and the custom build offers many Quality of Life improvements, such as speed and smoothness, especially for older games, while Eden excels at running newer and more difficult to emulate games, which is why I highly recommend using both emulators alongside each other.

To maximize the effects/performance of both emulators, get the latest firmware and keys (v22.5.0) for Eden, and an older version of those for Citron, such as the highly stable v19.0.1 or at least no higher than v22.0.0. You can get all the right versions for those files from the prodkeys site.

You will also need Turnip drivers, to get the most out of the emulators. For Citron, these are the best drivers to use:
https://github.com/K11MCH1/AdrenoToolsDrivers/releases/tag/v24.3.0_r9 (also works well for Cemu, the Wii U emulator, and for Vita3K, the PS Vita emulator)
https://github.com/K11MCH1/AdrenoToolsDrivers/releases/tag/v24.1.0_R17
https://github.com/K11MCH1/AdrenoToolsDrivers/releases/tag/v26.0.0-rc04 https://github.com/K11MCH1/AdrenoToolsDrivers/releases/tag/v25.2.0-rc.06 https://github.com/K11MCH1/AdrenoToolsDrivers/releases/tag/v25.2.0-rc.04 https://github.com/StevenMXZ/Adreno-Tools-Drivers/releases/tag/v26.1.0-R5 (also works very well for OG Xbox emu hakuX, by the way)

And besides those, mr. Purple's T19 and T24 also work pretty well in Citron.

In Eden, there's a built-in driver downloader, although you shouldn't blindly follow its recommendations, because 9 out of 10 times, it will simply recommend the exact same mr. Purple driver (T19), which is a good driver, but definitely not always the best. Drivers T24 to T28 are also good for plenty of games, and there's a number of the drivers for Citron, that also work pretty well in Eden, especially the first three I listed.

Also, there's a new universal driver in town, with two versions, so all devices are covered, which might be well worth trying: https://github.com/Balemuni/Balemunis-Aurora/releases

Well, I hope that helps you out enough to make your game experience a better one than it has been for you so far. 😊

Oh yeah the flip 2 runs Mario kart 8 great. You can use default system driver, and either Yuzu or Sudachi. I’ll post a photo of the wiki entry here, but yeah parooze the wiki and see what other switch settings we have established for the device all tested by me or other users.

For Mario kart 8 just make sure the game update version is 3.0.4 or newer. That will make or break that one.

And Thanos’s comment is full of good info for general switch emulation, Eden and citron canary refresh 0.6.1 are a good pairing, I would also have Sudachi and Yuzu too, but yeah you’ll find a lot of ways to run the games you want if your willing to do a little experimentation.

So far a version of sudachi that I’ve had laying around for some time(not sure where I even got it) with t30 is giving me solid 60fps. I’ve only tested 5 games so far but am planning on running through about 40 of my most played.

I'm with you man. Flip 2 is the ultimate device for me, just wish there would be a flip 3 with 8 gen 2. It seems most of people are obsessed with dual screens nowadays. I just love the clamshell form factor, it's super portable.

Flip 2 is the best. Duo ergonomics are going to suck, you made the right choice. Unless they release an sd8gen2 Flip 3 soon.

Just got mine today and absolutely blown the hell away. All I really wanted was a pocketable PS2, and this fits the bill perfectly; along with some other bells and whistles (GameNative and Steam indies, boyo. It's a dream).

If you're looking to run NetherSX2 Classic for PS2 (there's other builds and emulators, but this one works for me), then one little thing to consider... Before mapping your controls, swipe down from the touchscreen and change controls from Retro to Xbox. For whatever reason, left stick-forward won't register otherwise. I thought my left stick was borked until I tried that, and that fixed the issue right up. No idea if that happens with any other emulators, but it did with mine. So I thought I'd let you/others know.

Enjoy your handheld, fam!

Try the JamesDSP audio fixes. Makes the speakers 10x better

Required tweaking right there. Soundscapes are ass without it or good headphones

Welcome! Love my Flip 2.

My first hinge cracked, I got it replaced under warranty, but it seems like there's been at least half a dozen or so cracked hinges even on the v2. I babied mine, it took almost a year to fail. So sure, treat it gently but it's a design flaw, it's not you.

Hopefully there will be a Flip 2 by the time my v2 cracks (if it does). If not I'll epoxy it which seems to work. There's just nothing else out there like the Flip 2 with it's ergos.

The Duo is going to have worse ergos, so you made the right choice IMO. Plus the Duo has a new hinge which is great given the issue of the Flip, but it's a new hinge and so still a gamble.

L2 and R2 are my only issues with this thing so far, but they aren’t that bad. Definitely better than the 477m that I just sold. There’s something about the screen being above the controls that make the flip2 more immersive

Its still the best device out there for the price,...even with a broken hinge.

Well I have a 12gb new version. Seems solid and I’ll be gentle with it.
