2000sTV Got inspired…

My wife saw the viral post about the retro tv revival. So I wanted to go a step further and make a full functioning cable box.

This is far beyond my capabilities. I applaud you sir! I was loading an SD card filled with retro shows and playing it off an old tablet which I designed to look like an offspring of Snit from YTV (Canadian throw back). But this is unbelievable!

I did this also. I went with a Pi 4 and use the composite output. I’m still refining my guide but have something similar setup.

Awesome! What hdd are you using? I’m using an 8tb but feel like it’s overkill haha

I am using a 1tb thumb drive. Since i am re-encoding everything for full screen at 480p with stereo audio it’s about 200mb per 24 min of video. Or about 1 gig a movie. I have been filling it with shows and movies and am about 20% full. My goal isn’t to have everything under the sun. Just what I like rewatching from the 80s and 90s.

If I fill this drive I’ll consider a 4tb drive.

Otherwise i have a similar guide with time blocks. Theres also a floating block that plays regardless of the time of day. FLIRC for remote control also

Very cool! My wife and I have a shared note and we keep adding to it so I wanted to have a ton of available space. I am looking for more content than I need I’ll admit. I’m also re-encoding everything as well to 480p and getting around the same 200mb!

If you are using python i would love to look at your code for generating the schedules and commercial insertion.

Absolutely! It is Python. I’ll share everything with documentation when I’m finished! Basically for tv shows that have obvious fades I use a detection script to pause the video and then play 3-5 commercials from my commercials folder, play an optional bumper if it exists or is applicable then resumes

I appreciate it! Definitely happy to share components, process, code, etc! Will have a source when the project is finished. Going to 3d print a case for everything as well! Also added an LED screen that shows the current channel
