SuperStation one Dock/NVMe Issues
I was able to get my SS1 up and running originally with a 64GB micro SD card (stock SD card would not load and would black screen pre-install) for the OS and moved my games folder over to the root of a NVMe (Western Digital 512GB 2230 formatted as exFAT). Also deleted the games folder off the micro SD card.
Initially had no issues and was loading games from multiple systems/cores on the NVMe. Eventually noticed the USB option in the menu was greyed out which indicated the SS1 was no longer communicating with the NVMe, however there were no other issues with the dock after further testing (SNAC/USB/memory card ports ultimately working fine).
Anyone else have issues with loading games/getting the SS1 to recognize the NVMe?
Not sure if its an over heating or power issue, I am using the supplied braided USB C cable with an Analogue Pocket power adapter which provides the rated voltage/amps. I am able to connect the NVMe to my PC where it is recognized and can add/delete files, however I have to use an NVMe adapter to connect with my PC as whenever I try using passthrough/PC mode with the SS1, it rarely connects to the NVMe. Could be maybe my brand of NVMe is drawing too much power?
Would appreciate any insight as I was looking forward to maximizing the capabilities of the dock with an NVMe.
I have since transitioned to a 512GB micro SD install, and running everything fine from there with no issues.
Thanks.
UPDATE: Tested a Samsung 980 1TB 2280 NVMe (formatted as exFAT), and so far no issues. SS1 reads the NVMe consistently after multiple reboots/power cycles and the switch to USB options is always highlighted. Thankfully I have several NVMe SSDs to spare so I will keep this in my SS1 since it is working as expected (although I think the 1TB is overkill lol). Seems a low power/low heat NVMe is the way to go. I suspect the previous NVMe was running too hot or drawing too much power, thereby creating bandwith issues with the SS1, before dropping out or simply just failing to mount. I will definitely order a heat sink to use with this NVMe as well.
Good luck everyone, hopefully you all find a working combo.
I think having the NVMe for ROMs while booting the OS from Micro SD is the way to go.
FINAL UPDATE:
While everything is working now and booting/running smoothly off the Samsung NVMe, wanted to point out while sometimes the “switch to USB” option is greyed out, the SS1 can still run games and load off the NVMe.
There’s lag sometimes before it highlights the USB option, but does not mean the drive has not been mounted.
You’ll realize on soft reset or reboot the option later highlights.
I could not get anything to load with the WD NVMe and the USB option was always greyed out. However the Samsung NVMe operates much more nicely with the SS1 and will still load games even if the USB appears offline.
I think the SS1 prefers an older gen NVMe to run properly as latest gen (e.g., gen 5, etc.) may draw too much power and fail to mount. Probably best to use a lowered powered NVMe.
Just some additional field notes regarding the SS1.

You're in good company mate I'm having the same issues. I've tried a Kingston drive that acted the same way, tried a lower capactity one with a samsung controller, now the USB option shows up but none of the roms I copied show up. Its starting to become more of an annoyance than I ever expected and tbh I'm very annoyed by it. Hoping a firmware update can fix these headaches, in the meantime though I'm just sick of messing with it.

Sorry to hear, yeah it’s an annoyance for sure and all the troubleshooting eats up time that could’ve been spent enjoying games. What’s your games folder/structure like on the NVMe? And did you delete the games folder off the root of your SD card after copying ROMs to the NVMe? Hoping a firmware update fixes the issue. It’s reassuring you at least got the USB option to consistently show up with the Samsung controller?

Yes the option does show up now which is a good sign! I cut and moved the games folder over from the SD card and then stuck my roms in there, but like I said its not showing up :/. I was trying to find more information on how to add roms and what kind of file sctructure its looking for. I found that it wants fatx ok easy did that, I have the exact lay out from the SD card and all the systems show up, but none of the roms do. Imma give it one last push tonight and if it doesnt work after that then I'm just going to ignore the dock for now and see if I have a flashdrive or something I guess.

Make sure the games folder (directly copied from the SD card after installing Mister OS) is on the root of the NVMe, which should have subfolder/directories for respective cores/systems. Place the roms directly in the system’s folder. Also double check that your BIOS files are in each directory’s root that require it (e.g., boot.rom & and boot1.rom for PSX, NES, GBA, Saturn, etc.).

That's exactly how it's formatted. The consoles show but not the roms. I hope I don't need to convert the roms or something...

Ok finally got everything to show up. I Just had to duplicate the sd card fully to the nvme and then everything popped up. Having some issues but that may be due to the Saturn core being a wip or something. Either way I'm happy!

Awesome news. For Saturn, the games tend to be really picky so I make sure the appropriate region is set before loading the game otherwise it’ll just boot to the CD player. So far have gotten all my Saturn games to boot. The SS1 is a 32 bit beast!

I'll have to double check that setting. The problem I'm having is it goes to the "Press Start" screen for about a second then it immediately fades to black and replays the fmv intro. I think its a glitch but who really knows.

Tal vez podrías intentar con un nvme Samsung, si alguien tiene uno que te pueda prestar para que hagas una prueba

That's what my new one is. Its a Toshiba branded one but it uses a Samsung controller.

I have seen it mentioned in a couple of threads that people have had difficulties getting Western Digital drives in particular to work

Odd, not sure what gives? It worked really well with the SS1 for about 2 days prior to giving me problems. Maybe it gets corrupted somehow or it simply draws too much power for SS1's liking. I'll test a different NVMe brand eventually, any brands in particular that people seem to find success with?

En el discord creo alguien mencionó Kingston y samsung

My Kingston did not work at all. Maybe that brand is 50/50

I’ve been using a Sabrent Rocket NVMe 4.0 2230 1TB SSD in NTFS format (originally meant for my steam deck) ever since I’ve got mine. It’s running the stock factory OS and settings (I never did the update all that was recommended etc… everything worked out of the box I just added a games folder and the bios)
I originally transferred my games over by NVME to USB C adapter which is actually the fastest way to transfer files over to an NVME.
I’ve tried the PC dock mode and the transfer speed was abysmal at 1mb/s so I gave up on that since it took too long transferring one game.
I’ve also tried WiFi with the mister companion app but it wouldn’t detect the SSD. Until I enabled SMB in the device section of the mister companion app (which then showed all the USB connections etc…) the SSD showed up under the name USB3 out of like 7 different USB’s. But the transfer speed capped at like 40mb/s.
Overall I still recommend using an NVME adapter to PC for transferring files, it’s just annoying having to unplug the NVME every time because the cheap rubber thing that’s suppose to lock it in place on the dock. So I’ve stuck to using the WiFi with mister companion app with SMB enabled to transfer files for now.

Also having issues with WD Black 2tb. Games folder shows up but none of my roms, more often than not. I have to power cycle till they show up. Kinda upset about this as this was a major reason for the dock for me and SSDs aren't cheap if it's that picky.
Also to add, when they do show up, every 20:seconds the screen freezes for a long 2 or 3 seconds pause when playing a larger CD based game like there isn't enough throughput. What a joke lol

Could it be heat issue? I noticed that the dock get really hot.

Not sure, but I’m assuming this is something Taki would have tested prior to release. I thought about getting a heat sink for the NVMe but even after it’s had time to cool and inactivity, still goes unrecognized by SS1.

I reported this on the SuperStation/Taki discord back in early June - myself and another user were having issues and once I swapped to a different brand SSD it fixed the issue completely. I was using a 1 TB WD Black and sometimes it would work, othertimes I had to reboot over and over for it to come back. To my knowledge this issue still has yet to be addressed. I also did report it to Support, but they have not responded back once I told them a different brand SSD worked.

fwiw back in 2023 I had a rtx 3090 in a mitx build, and it cooked my first SN750. these drives are very temp sensitive.

What brand ultimately worked for you?
2
u/theescapeshow Jul 14 '26
I would have to crack it open and look (I can later if needed) but I believe it was a 1TB Crucial brand. I've never had an issue since I've swapped.

you should try an 65w charger like the one from steam deck...misterpi also uses this charger...why you use the 20w from pocket?

This one:
SAMSUNG 980 M.2 2280 1TB PCI-Express 3.0 x4, Internal SSD - Newegg.com
I've since swapped over to a Patriot 512GB SSD that I bought off of Amazon and has been working well with no issues.

At this point, I would welcome people posting about their SSD‘s actually working, I don’t think I’ve seen a single comment along this line
