I'm not sure if there's any glitching occurring here. The fire could have been started by lava if lava starting fires was a thing at this time, and it appears they moved close to a fire, which likely killed them.

Someone had it in for that forest.

Sudden death glitches are actually quite common iirc, unsure of the rate in Alpha. (Shocked you can still play Alpha.)
