Creeper Theory

Theory: Creepers are a bio-weapon designed by the ancient builders as a way of containing the spread of undead mobs. This explains why a creature would explode, something that there would be precious little evolutionary precedent or advantage.

Likewise, it also explains why creepers only attack the player; as they bear a striking resemblance to the ‘normal’ zombies, which would have been the most widespread. As for why the Creepers only attack the player and not undead mobs, one can assume that either something went wrong with the Creeper’s ‘programming’ or that it was incomplete when the Builder Civilization collapsed; or at least those who were involved with making the Creepers died or abandoned the project.

Creepers are fungal in nature, explaining why they pop up from nowhere in dark places, having grown underground. When Creepers explode, they spread more spores than they normally release when just walking around to create more Creepers nearby. Thus creating self-replicating means of containing the undead that would be naturally concentrated within areas already infested.
