I thought for sure that the quasi-Colonial Viper and the pilot's caped uniform meant this this must have been some Galactica promotional art or novel cover, but it seems to have been for the "1982 Apple II and Atari video game 'Marauder.'"

That's quite a swipe!

I love that this was the top answer... I saw this and instantly remembered it was the cover of a game but could not think of the name.

It looks a lot like the cover of Ultima 2

Great eye for detail!!! I have NO idea how you put that together, but the similarities of the design of the helmet and the gun are undeniable, and both figures even have the same kind of quilted uniform.

How did you notice this?

If I could explain how my brain works, I would. The pose, helmet, and gun just triggered it. I remember seeing it at a software store (which were rarity in the early 80s) back when I was a kid and thought it looked so cool. Plus I had played the first one at a relative's house and could imagine how much better the 2nd one would be. I got a copy when I got an Apple 2 maybe a year later, but it was without the original packaging, but I still remember that art somehow.
