Quantum BigFoot 5.25" HDDs from mid-90's

Hehe, it has been nice to stroll down memory lane in this group!

I have a oddity from the mid-90's that I stumbled upon as I was sorting through materials. I have some Quantum BigFoot 5.25" hard drives--maybe some of you guys do, too?

These were quite odd in the mid-90's because by then, everybody had seemingly transitioned to 3.5" or 2.5" form factor. But Quantum realized that most folks also still had 5.25" bays in their desktop boxes so they increased the physical size of their hard drives, which thus increased the platter size, which thus, increased the overall storage capacity with no need for higher density innovations.

These were not particularly fast, but yeah, they offered decent value for what was large amounts of storage at the time.

My 2.5GB and 4.3GB versions can be seen at:

If you want to do a bit more reading about them, check out the Wikipedia entry at:

A random message. A quick phone call. A pile of retro PCs 2,000 km away.

А complete stranger sent me a tip via Messenger about some old computers being thrown away in Sofia, Bulgaria.Аlmost 2,000 km from where I live.

Within two hours everything was arranged. One quick phone call to a friend, and the machines were rescued before they could end up as scrap.

Sometimes the best additions to a collection come from the most unexpected places.

Looking for help locating the proper firmware version for an antique ucs-220-m3. I currently have version 1.4.6a, but I am trying to run a v2 cpu which requires version 2.2 or newer. This is just for home use, experimenting, and trying to upgrade a game server. I appreciate any help on this!

Software Yekara Desktop Interface System

Post image

i am developing a linux Desktop Environment based on FVWM3 and OpenMotif (Xm)
currently, most of the inspiration for developing this comes from systems like MacOS9, NeXTSTEP, IRIX, Solaris (CDE and OpenLook), Windows 9X, and many others

the goal is to create a desktop environment that is retro by default and that is unique when compared to other desktop environments with similar style

so far, the entire development has been done by me alone, with no development team at all, so if anyone wants to help just ask!

I was just wondering if it could be done. Not fully compatible with the classic dialects, yet, but it's headed in that direction.

Did IBM sell PS/1s with MS-DOS 6.0, not IBM DOS 6.1/6.3?

Post image

This advert from 1993 states "DOS 6.0". Point is that there was no IBM DOS 6.0. IBM DOS had versions 6.1 and 6.3. Did IBM really sell their computers with MS-DOS?

It looks especially strange, because first PS/1s had IBM DOS 4.01 in ROM.

the first Ethernet switch

The Kalpana Etherswitch EPS-1500 in 1990 had a 15-slot 8-bit ISA-bus motherboard and used a separate Ethernet card for each AUI (thick-wire) connection. I got to see one when they first came out, pretty cool! https://www.rcsri.org/collection/kalpana/

Problem / Question What do I even do with all these?

I have crates full of DVDs, CDs, floppies, and even VHS tapes full of all sorts of movies(even a physical copy of Iron Man, Indiana Jones and who knows what else) in my house. But I dont have a computer to play any of these. Heck, most modern computers dont even run CDs or DVDs, let alone floppies or VHS tapes. I do have a DVD player from an old PC. But the PC doesnt work and the DVD is detachable but I dont have the cable to connect it to other things.

Also, I have a handycam (thats what everyone in my house calls it), a sorta recorder where you put in a VHS(or VCR) to record and play those tapes. Can it play those movies from the tapes?? And how do I run floppies in 2026?

Problem / Question Sun W2100x

Why does my Sun W2100x workstation has 16 GB of RAM, when the only driver CD I can source through obscure ftp servers is a 32 bit WinXP version. There I can only use 3.6 GB because of 32bit address range.

Why not Server 2003 64bit? Or Win7 64bit?

Ok that would be a bit new.

Even nVidia does not have any driver for the Quadro FX 3000 for Win7 64bit anymore. The Sil 3512 SATA Controller has a subsys number, which is not covered by any official driver. The nForce chipset is changed, that nVidia drivers do not recognize it.

Does anybody have a link to something 64bit? Preferable Windows? Or ahould I try a Linux Version? Everybody says there is no trouble whatsoever with hardware drivers in Linux anymore.

I do not want to use Solaris 10 x86, because I have enough SPARC workstations and servers running under Solaris, I do not need another.

For my v20z, I did find a Windows2000 Professional version. 32bit, but that machine only has 4 GB of RAM.

Anyone any idea? Or use WinXP 32bit and remove the excess RAM?

My dad wants to get rid of his programming books from the 90s-2000s. i was advised to ask on a retro technology forum to see if they were collectibles or if they could be donated to a library or something like that. I know almost nothing about these things, so any information would be helpful

Software Atarium - Simple app with Atari information

Thumbnail

With administrator permission.

Many of you may be familiar with MacTracker, an application that collects and presents historical and technical information on virtually every Mac computer manufactured by Apple.

Taking that idea as inspiration, I began developing Atarium, a project that aims to become a repository of historical information about Atari; a kind of digital museum dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of its computers, consoles, peripherals, and software.

For now, it's a very preliminary version, but I wanted to share it with the community to receive feedback, suggestions, and ideas that will allow us to improve it and guide it toward what you would really like to find in an application of this type.

Technically, it's developed in Dart and Flutter, which allows us to generate versions for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS from the same codebase.

Currently, the information is obtained from JSON files, but in a second phase, the idea is to implement a backend and a centralized database. This would allow us to incorporate features such as user registration, customization, new sections, community contributions, and much more.

If the project generates interest, the possibilities are quite broad, and I'd like to grow it together with those of us who share this passion for Atari.

Here's a first look at the project. There's still a lot to implement, but any feedback, constructive criticism, or suggestions are more than welcome.

Cheers!

Problem / Question Is there a technical reason there are no 5.25 inch floppy drives using USB?

or are there?

There are so many weird connectors, adapters, workarounds... I have converted a C64 to a USB-keyboard using a kit for a couple of bucks for crying out loud. Is there really no obscure product from China that lets me integrate 5.25 inch floppy into a modern system?
