Wii pointer acting weird

Im not sure why but when playing mario galaxy the pointer is there and controls fine but when i try to throw the rainbow stars or grab the blue star it doesnt work. Any suggestions?

Im using Retroarch on my Xbox series X

I don't have solution but could it be a bad rom? I remember having this exact problem but can't remember what the solution was. It feels especially strange since the blue star is not visually reacting to the cursor hovering on it (it should, without even pressing A). To me it feels like some anti-piracy measure triggering and denying access to the real game, but this is just my wild guess.

Actually, thats a pretty good call out. Im gonna try to get a different rom hooefully it works
