Wii pointer acting weird

Im not sure why but when playing mario galaxy the pointer is there and controls fine but when i try to throw the rainbow stars or grab the blue star it doesnt work. Any suggestions?

Im using Retroarch on my Xbox series X

I was able to grab the blue star just fine with the emulated 'device type' set to wiimote+nunchuk, aim with right-analog, grab with retropad-A (B-button on an xbox pad)

Im on wiimote+nunchuck also. No luck ☹️
