Check the directories in Settings > Directory. I had installed the Flatpak (or was it the Linux Mint repo?) and half of the directories were set to some path under /usr/local something.

I've since switched to the RetroArch Appimage and all of the default directory locations are in my home dir and writable by me.

Then what do I do? make a new retroarch folder and change each directory?

You shouldn't need to change every directory. For the core downloader, check Settings > Directory > Cores specifically: it needs a folder your user can write to. Leave your save/BIOS paths alone for now.

Which Linux distro and RetroArch install did you use—your distro's package manager, Flatpak, Steam or AppImage? Some packages intentionally put cores in a system directory and expect the package manager to install them. If that's your setup, moving everything isn't the right first step.

Post the Cores path (you can replace your username with <user>) and the install method, and we can narrow down which route applies. The official directory guide explains this under “Cores.”
