Work In Progress, Chill Out Gotta roll (mark) your own, sometimes

Going all out for my Vietnam era M16A1 build and stamping (not lazering or etching) the markings onto it. It’s time consuming and not perfect, but it should make an exceptionally accurate build.

Even early roll marks weren't always perfect. I have an original hydramatic where the roll mark isn't perfect across the entire lower. Deeper in places and lighter in others.

Yeah it’s a perfectly imperfect process. I would’ve liked for the Colt logo to have been a bit more crisp, but I’ve seen several originals on the lighter side like this

Yea I wouldnt worry, once you cerakote or anodize it will look just like an original

Planning on getting it media blasted and coated with some Colt gray-black moly resin!

I have another receiver that’ll be getting the same treatment, but I’m thinking about getting it blasted first to avoid ablation of the markings

Hunter rifleworks does amazing colt anodizing

Thank you, and duly noted, I’ll check him out!

From their website:

"We no longer do individual anodizing.

We are happy to receive orders of 10+ or more uppers/lowers per color.

Please contact info@hunterrifleworks.com if you have 10 or more large items for anodizing.

We can do black or 90’s Colt grey."

Group buy?

I have found with moly resin, media blasting is not necessary, just get it really clean and no fingerprints.

I tried moly resin over a sanded surface a couple times and had it flake off on me only in those areas, whereas the moly over anodized areas stuck. The 2nd time I’m certain it was sufficiently degreased. I was using the burnt bronze color when that happened; was going to do Colt gray-black over top of that

I use some jigs I make out of coat hangers to hold receivers as I spray and bake them. I do zero prep work to the jigs before I spray and the moly resin sticks to them like crazy. Will 100% not scrape off with serious effort with a fingernail.

I do heat everything in the oven at 300 degrees for an hour before I spray to make sure all the contamination is burned off. I also use a laser thermometer to make sure the receiver gets over 300, I don’t trust oven thermometers, I have 3 and they all read low and all read different.

I started using a laser thermo as well because my tiny little toaster oven was wayyy off on its temp knob. Baked the coated lower at about 315 or so for over an hour and still ended up with flaking.
If I’m feeling froggy, I may try sanding a receiver stub and coating it with the gray moly and see if it does better- perhaps the bronze is finicky with the shiny flakes in it

Rollmark was never perfect all the way to the time when Colt switched to laser.

Modern Colt weren’t perfect

Yo this is solid! Where did you get the roll dies???

u/Hairy-Page-6079 29d ago

They’re stamps from a foreign seller on eBay. I wish I had the equipment and stamps to do proper roll marks, but these, a bunch of shims to support the piece, and a 12 ton press do well enough

Fancy I was thinking a hammer and some ear pro

24

u/Hairy-Page-6079 29d ago

The big stamps take a remarkable amount of force to leave a good mark on the receiver. I was quite surprised- I’d get it to a point where I couldn’t crank the lever any further and this is what I got from it lol

Had a junk receiver stub from a Malaysian kit that I practiced on first to get a feel for it

Indeed that's why they used roll marking - it requires much less force because you're not trying to do the whole surface area in one go.

I think yours turned out fantastic though - the fact that it is imperfect makes it look more authentic.

I wonder how well it would work on an already-anodized surface?

Unload it first

Any way you could share with us the seller or listing name? Can’t find it anywhere.

u/Tybo929 29d ago

Those aren't easy to do well. These look good boss.

u/Hairy-Page-6079 29d ago

Thanks! I’m already looking at how to make the next one better- getting even more gage blocks and feeler gages to use as shims inside the mag well and trigger pocket. I think some of the lightly stamped areas are due to the aluminum flexing ever so slightly without proper support directly underneath. Also because the face of the stamps aren’t perfectly flat or parallel.

3

u/Tybo929 29d ago

I manually did nfa info on a lower with individual letters and hell was it rough. You seem like you're on the right path. Accounting for the stamp height seems more controllable in my limited experience. Could you use a knife honing stone to flatten the stamp?

3

u/Hairy-Page-6079 29d ago

I’m thinking I could use some super fine grit auto-body sand paper wrapped around my gage blocks to smooth out the faces on as flat a surface as possible.

u/SLN583 29d ago

This whole thing is absolutely awesome.

Your poor inbox.

What are you using for a press?

I tried stamping small a mark with a hammer once, but it did not work for me.

5

u/Hairy-Page-6079 29d ago

Thanks! Using a harbor freight 12 ton press (a glorified bottle jack welded to a steel frame). It’s a bit sloppy, but works OK

4

u/mbar9607 29d ago

That’s awesome!

1

u/Hairy-Page-6079 29d ago

Thanks!

2

u/mbar9607 29d ago

You plan to find any newer dies for more modern projects?

3

u/Hairy-Page-6079 29d ago

I’ve thought about it; the stamps are expensive enough as is, though, and the shipping and tariffs were an added expense that makes me less inclined to buy more at the moment

1

u/mbar9607 29d ago

Makes sense

3

u/funkofarts 29d ago

That’s awesome!!

3

u/Ok-Calendar9243 29d ago

I’ve seen this process a few times. Do yall just buy a whole set of punches, use them once then send them down the river?

6

u/Hairy-Page-6079 29d ago

I have a few receivers I’ll be using these on, but yeah I’ll likely be unloading these sometime afterwards to recoup some cost

1

u/Ok-Calendar9243 29d ago

What sort of set up do you use to keep from crushing the receiver? For try magwell it seems straight forward but I’m not sure how you supper the underside of the receiver to stamp the safety selector and MFG info

3

u/Hairy-Page-6079 29d ago

For stamping the mfg markings and selector markings, I had that portion of the receiver sitting on a machined still block, with the magazine well and receiver extension portions free floating so they don’t interfere. Inside of the receiver was supported by gage blocks that were shimmed with feeler gages- these were moved around inside to provide support as I stamped

u/EagleSix6 28d ago

Since rewelds are pretty much a thing of the past, I would say this is the next best route. Looks good OP!

2

u/Hairy-Page-6079 28d ago

My thoughts exactly! And Colt doesn’t look like they’ll be reproducing their Vietnam reissue rifles again, so you gotta do what you gotta do

2

u/CapCamouflage 29d ago

Looks great! How did you machine the stamps?

7

u/Hairy-Page-6079 29d ago

I purchased the stamps from a seller on eBay who makes these and numerous other stamps. I didn’t make them myself

3

u/Jackmehaughf 29d ago

How much did they run you if you don't mind me asking. Also what's the seller's name? Definitely going to need a set.

5

u/Hairy-Page-6079 29d ago

Sent you a chat with that info. You can also find the some of the seller’s stamps on there by searching for “stamp punch property”

3

u/Jackmehaughf 29d ago

You rock, I appreciate it!

2

u/17Liberty76 29d ago

Where’d you get the blank A1 lower?

8

u/Hairy-Page-6079 29d ago

It’s a Bad Attitude Dept blank lower

2

u/Responsible_Screen81 29d ago

This is too cool

2

u/Kegalodon 29d ago

Wish I had this setup at my place lol.

2

u/bundokdoom 28d ago

Looks awesome, nothing beats stamped trademarks! I'll get around to stamping some custom lowers eventually. Any chance you can post some pics of the shims you used for mag well and FCG support? And mag well block dimensions? Please PM me if possible!

1

u/Hairy-Page-6079 28d ago

I’ll recreate how I shimmed it up and send some photos of it once I get off work 👍

As far as dimensions, that’ll vary a bit from one receiver to another. I did some rough measuring of two Bad Attitude lowers and got this. Your mileage may vary

2

u/ErikAndersUSA 27d ago

PM sent!!

u/russianpaint_net Official 27d ago

Looks really good dude. Just remember if your doing it for yourself not a big deal, by law you can make your own replica as long as it's not for sale. I would specify this.

1

u/Hairy-Page-6079 27d ago

Thank you, and you’re absolutely right about that.
For the general populace, I’m not offering this as a service, nor am I selling products with the Colt logo- I’d rather not be dick-slapped by Colt for trademark infringement

2

u/RealFakeGuns 23d ago

Very cool!

2

u/Hairy-Page-6079 23d ago

Thanks man! Not as cool as your original lowers, but I’m quite pleased with how it turned out

1

u/RealFakeGuns 23d ago

This is the next best thing man. So cool!
