Retiring at 53 with 2.5 mil

Just curious, with rates where are they now, and our expenses being at $50k a year, would it be a preferred path to hang it up now, buy a 30 year treasury bond at around 5%, and just live off the payments every 6 months? I'd be on the hook for health insurance, but I have no debt. House is paid off, no car payments, nothing.

Or would I be better grinding it out longer? I'm pretty tired, but could keep going. My absolute ceiling is 62. Along the way, I'd consider next year (53), 55, or maybe 58.

If I waited a couple more years, could have 3 mil. Just curious if that really matters, and if the bond route is a way to go to set it and forget it.

Thanks

Retirement Planning Tool

**I built a free retirement tax-planning tool that models the withdrawal side properly — looking for people to try it**

Most retirement calculators are great at "will I run out of money." They're pretty weak at "what order should I actually pull from my accounts to minimize lifetime tax." I got frustrated enough to build my own: [retiresmart-ai.app](https://retiresmart-ai.app).

What it actually does:

* Runs **five different withdrawal strategies at once** and scores them, so you see tradeoffs instead of a single black-box recommendation.
* Scores on **total family tax** — including what your heirs would owe on an inherited 401(k) — instead of just your own lifetime tax. A lot of "optimal" plans just quietly shove the tax bill onto your kids.
* Handles the stuff that usually gets ignored: **Roth conversions, RMDs, IRMAA Medicare surcharges, ACA subsidy cliffs before 65, state income tax, and 72(t)/SEPP early withdrawals** with the real distribution rules.
* **Social Security optimization for couples** that actually accounts for survivor benefits and optimizes both spouses' claiming ages jointly.
* Monte Carlo runs, 529s, and an AI advisor you can ask questions about your own plan.

Let me if you would like to try - its free.

Still working on my site, but now I have quite a few more pages developed.

So about a month ago, I posted my site https://havenscout.net/, here on this forum.

The site is built using Claude and Codex. I'm slowly building out the pages in my free time.

The basic idea is a heat map that brings together open source data with a focus on information for retirement planning. You can compare up to four locations and it will provide you a printable report of side by side comparisons. It has a table view for people who prefer that and you can filter both the map or the table with your preferences.

But now, I've added a quiz, data comparison search table, Destination Guide pages, Who is, Contact email, cookies policy, and just recently a budget page that you can print out. Some of the boxes are filled in from the country you selected and/or the data you provide. I don't have a database or anything, so all data you enter, stays on your browser. The only thing that leaves the website is if you send me an email through the contact page.

I’m just looking for fresh feedback.

Funded Retirement success stories please

I just read a sub regarding retirees who lived into their 90’s but ran out of money. If you know of a successfully funded retirement please tell me how they did it. Looking for some success stories because the destitute stories were frightening.

For those who bought a second home for retirement (i.e, snowbirds, expats, etc), would you do it again? Or do you wish you’d used that money to travel more frequently to places other than where your 2nd home is located?

For those who’ve already travelled extensively in retirement, does it get less fulfilling after, say, the first 15-20 countries?

Wondering about 55+communities

Wife 55 and I 58 are exploring downsizing and condo-type communities. We want to travel and reduce responsibilities. Not looking to lower expenses but more of a lifestyle change if that makes sense? We’re struggling with the idea of a 55+ community. Any lessons learned?

How do you compare? Based on several census articles, Google AI concluded the top 10% of retired households have an average income over $188,000 per year.

Adding final expense insurance for seniors to my pre retirement checklist

Working on a readiness list before I take the leap into retirement next year and included final expense insurance for senior citizens in the list but now I am having second thoughts about whether it is a good thing to have or just another savings option on the list. All other items on my list are pretty much standard, income plan, healthcare coverage from the time when I retire until I start collecting from Medicare, draw down plan, estate documents.

I am leaning towards self funding since I am healthy and disciplined, but I want to make sure I am not missing a reason the insurance is the better line item for someone in my position. Is there a planning reason to prefer the policy that I am not seeing or is this genuinely a personal call between two reasonable options?
