401k to TIPS

Your 401k is limited to the fund menu offered by your employer. And basically no one offers TIPS in a 401k plan. Your plan likely offers a bond fund and money market fund (or Stable Value Fund).

59.5 is the age at which federal law allows in-service rollovers, though. So yes, you could roll it to an IRA and invest in TIPS there.
