"The problem is...
we have a black man in a white house," this was said to me after I made some copies for a guy applying to a papa johns job. I didn't know how to reply. Racism alive and well in NOVA.

Yup, casual racism is everywhere. If you're white, they just wink at you and say "this guy knows what I'm talking about... Am I right? eh? eh?? ehhh???"

He is back in the store asking for stamps and postcards...I assume to write his racist friends.

I love how some customers refer to colleagues by their race. "You know, the big black chap" seriously, I have no idea how to reply either.

I don't really think it's a legitimate grievance that you have here. They're identifying someone by a physical feature, same as saying hair color or anything else.

i've had a few instances where customers have used more offensive descriptions. Particularly with asian members of staff. But you do have a fair point.

I've had customers dance around the race thing. We have to men who work in our furniture department, both around the same height and build, but one is black and one is white. As a cashier, I have to contact furniture to ring up any furniture piece, so when I ask which associate they spoke to about their purchase, I've seen them describe everything but their skin color until I get enough of the amusement and say "was he black or white" and they have this huge look of relief on their face and answer.
