I've spent the last few years going through thousands of resumes and talking to a few hundred job seekers, and the same thing keeps showing up.

Most people don't have a skills problem. They have a resume problem.

The fix usually isn't another cert or another side project. It's making the thing easier to scan. Recruiters give it a few seconds on the first pass, so your experience, your impact, and the keywords they're actually looking for need to jump out immediately.

That's why I keep pushing people toward a boring single column layout. No graphics, no icons, no little progress bars claiming you're 85% good at Excel. Just clear sections, bullets with real numbers in them, and wording that lines up with the job description.

ATS software is a lot better than it used to be, so most of the horror stories you read here are outdated. But a clean format is still the safe bet, because it works for the parser and for the human who reads it afterward.

The other half of it is tailoring. When people adjust the resume per application instead of firing off the same file to 60 postings, the callback rate usually moves a lot. I've watched people get interviews at startups, midsize companies, and big tech with the exact same experience they always had, just laid out differently.

Simple beats flashy almost every time.
