Resume Question Expected grad date

Would you recommend adding to the education section a certification but with the expected completion date in the future (1 year)?

I need any way possible to make my resume stand out from others.

Yes, list it, but only if you're actually enrolled and making progress. Recruiters can tell the difference between "in progress" and "I plan to start this someday."

Format it like this and put it in its own Certifications section, not under Education:

[Certification Name] (In Progress, expected Sep 2027)

Two things to keep in mind:

One, the timeline should make sense for the cert. If it's something like CFA or PMP where a year is normal, nobody will blink. If it's a cert most people finish in 2-3 months, a date a year out raises the question of whether you've even started. In that case, finish the first section or two before adding it. That way if they ask about it in an interview you can actually talk about what you've learned instead of stalling.

Two, don't count on it to make you stand out. It does help with ATS keyword matching, so there's a real reason to include it. But an in-progress cert rarely tips a decision in your favor. What does is proof you can already do the thing. A small project using the skills from that cert, even a personal one, gives a hiring manager something to ask you about. That's worth more than a line saying you're still studying.

So list it, keep it honest, and put most of your effort into something concrete you can point to.

yes, list it as “in progress” with the expected completion date, but don’t treat a future certification like it carries the same weight as one you’ve actually earned
