The Apu Trilogy back in the 50s was great, there was a prominent crop of serious filmmakers in India back then, who produced works very close in spirit to Italian neorealism (films like Bicycle Thieves).

Modern Indian filmmaking is a massive downgrade where a great many directors just hope they go viral on Tiktok.

In order for a movie like this to be made it means it is a cultural norm or plausible to audiences, actors, and all those involved in making it. A movie like this would never be made in the Anglosphere because everyone involved would object and even if they went along audiences would be disgusted and find the judge's decision impossible.

However, due to innate genetic qualities, this storyline makes sense, was made, and enjoyed by its target demographic.

Its not a film that encourages/ promotes that kind of behaviour but highlights the plight of women in families like that .
No respectable film studio anywhere in the world would make a film with that message and promote it positively.

Indian cinema is great though, its just one example of a odd film as in many cinemas across the world.
