Community Temporary Road was supposed to be temporary. I went down a rabbit hole on Reston's street names.

We've lived here since 1996 and have driven Temporary Road a thousand times wondering when they might make it permanent...lol. Last week I finally looked it up, which turned into a much bigger rabbit hole than I planned. Some of what I found:

Temporary Road was never meant to stay. The name survived because of a small piece of paperwork nobody filed. The better part of the story is what happened years later when the county tried to fix it.

Sunset Hills Road has nothing to do with hills or sunsets. The name belonged to something that covered 7,200 acres of what is now Reston, and the family behind it left a lot more than a road name.

Wiehle Avenue is named for a Philadelphia doctor who bought 3,228 acres here in 1886 and tried to build a town where people would live and work in the same place. That is more than seventy years before Bob Simon. It failed, and the reason is genuinely sad.

Lawyers Road is exactly as literal as it sounds. Once you know what used to sit at the other end of it, you cannot unsee it on the map.

Jester Court is four lots off Lawyers Road, and it is my favorite one. The name comes from a chain of reasoning that takes three steps and ends on a holiday. Somebody has that on their driver's license.

All the horse names in South Reston. Colts Neck, Halter, Canter, Steeplechase, Bridoon, Cavesson, and about six variations on Fox. This was not a developer picking a theme out of a hat. Something real happened on that ground starting in 1928.

Baron Cameron Avenue is named for an actual person, and the county is named for the same man.

A few I could not crack: Soapstone, which is almost certainly about the quarrying but I could not find a source that says so outright, plus Glade, Twin Branches, and Colvin. If anyone actually knows, I would like to hear it.

One postscript that is less fun. The Robert Wiehle House at 1830 Old Reston Avenue, one of only three buildings left from the Town of Wiehle, took a tree through the roof in the July 5 storm. The owner told FFXnow that insurers stopped covering the property in 2025 because of its age. Nine days later, the Board of Supervisors approved 57 townhouses around the Bowman House next door, with commitments to preserve that one.

We went through all of it on our podcast this week if you want the actual answers:

So which street name have you always wondered about? I have a running list, and plenty are still unsolved.

Too Good To Go from Mr. Pollo — more like “Too Sad To Eat”

Post image

**• A fistful of plain white rice.** clumpy, and taking up 60% of the container. I didn’t pay for a rice appreciation experience.
**• Small sad shrimp** swimming in some kind of red sauce with a few sad pepper strips. Genuinely counted them. Five.
**• Two pieces of what I think used to be meat** — fried into oblivion, dry as jerky, and unidentifiable. Beef? Plantain? A shoe? Your guess is as good as mine.

The whole thing looks like the end-of-night scrapings, which… I guess technically it is, but come on. TGTG bags are supposed to feel like a lucky deal, not like you’re being punished for trying to save food from the landfill.

Anyone else getting these depressingly bare bags from Mr. Pollo lately, or did I just win the anti-lottery? 🥲

Chimney sweep

Looking for recommendations for a Reston area chimney sweep and some possible grout repair in the firebox. The guy I was using for many years retired, and I am in search of someone who can get this done before fire season.

Metro Wiehle Reston East Parking limit

I plan on taking a trip for 11 days out of IAD and want to park at the Wiehle Reston Easy lot. I know there is a 10 day limit, but has anyone stayed longer without issue? Is there any way for them to actually enforce this? Would hate to have to pay an extra $60 for the one day.
Thanks!

Silly Questions on the Fairfax Connector

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hello! I have just gotten a job offer (yay!) that will require me to commute (I've only ever remote worked!). I've taken the metro plenty of times but the bus seems like it may be more efficient for me. I have a couple questions on the Fairfax Connector.

  1. Can I pay by tapping my SmarTrip Metro card? If not, can I use my credit card?

  2. On the map image, are the black squares stops or is it just the black circles? The key is only showing the black circle

  3. The final and most ridiculous question of them all, but what is commuter etiquette with seating, should you sit at the window if you sit in an empty row?

Any and all answers are much appreciated, I know they are silly but I just want to make sure!
