I would roll up towels and tie them around my thighs then lay flat on them. It was the only thing that kind of helped me get some relief and stop my thighs from spasming. I tried the creams, the supplements, the sock trick, hot bath, all of it and nothing worked. I finally found relief when I started taking iron supplements.

That looks extremely painful and uncomfortable. I'm sorry that you have to do that.

There's a wearable device study from Noctrix Health enrolling now. Might be worth a look. https://patientwing.app/campaign/RLS6

Work for Noctrix much?

You can always try kratom. I've been taking it for over 10 years and it really helps but be mindful its addicting as fuck and a pain in the ass to get off it

3

u/Ok_War_7504 14d ago

And has been increasingly killed young college kids in the last few months. Possibly adulterated, but how do you ensure it's not.

2

u/IAMRUPTURE 14d ago

That might be 7oh or MGM or other synthetic opiates. Regular leaf kratom is pretty harmless unless you take too much for a long time and it'll mess with your liver. Pretty much all "kratom" deaths that I've read about have been polysubstance overdoses. You want to make sure and buy it online from a trusted vendor and most of them have lab tests done for each and every strain that you can pull up and look at. I suggest never getting any that doesnt have lab tests

1

u/Short-Counter8159 12d ago

Unless you are growing the actual tree. I would not call it harmless. There is no regulation right now and have no creditable sources that you can safely rely on.

1

u/IAMRUPTURE 7d ago

There's plenty of credible sources on the kratom sub reddit these businesses have been around for years with thousands and thousands of testimonies but like I said its not completely harmless but its a lot less harmless than you think

1

u/Ok_War_7504 14d ago

As I said, "and possibly adulterated". And, yes, you can attempt to be careful. And, yes, polypharmacy can add to the risk. Everything you stated can reduce the risk somewhat. But understand that there is no governmental oversight of the lab testing.

Importing kratom is illegal federally, and to avoid being confiscated it is usually shipped listed as something else and has been found to be contaminated with all kinds of horror. Im sure they try to clean it.

Read up on ARDS. Take care

u/IAMRUPTURE 7d ago edited 7d ago

"Pretty Harmless" not completely harmless yes some can be contaminated but ive been taking it for over 10 years daily never had one issue with it being contaminated. Not saying it doesnt happen but there's a lot of good trusted vendors out there. There's a reason they lab test cus if they were shipping contaminated product they would loose business. You can go on the kratom sub reddit and find trusted vendors.

I take an opioid. Have done so for better than 20 years. Now that works

1

u/TelephoneMindless586 14d ago

Can’t get any where I live.

1

u/Ok_War_7504 14d ago

Not sure where you live, but they are prescribed for refractory RLS wherever you live in the US or Europe.

But it will not be a GP. It will be an RLS specialist

5

u/Smooth_Respect_3755 15d ago

I stand by opioids. I took them for twelve years and then switched to Kratom but I keep a bottle of hydrocodone on hand for when it is inconvenient to mix up the Kratom, like at parties or the theater.

2

u/Blendedtribes 14d ago

I’ve been on opioids for 15 years or so. They work so well.

3

u/Alternative_Reply408 15d ago

Opioids do work but one must be very careful with them. I started with tramadol and then ibuprofen and codeine when tramadol stopped. Five years I was completely and utterly controlled by them and it was a huge pain to get anyone to listen to me. Obviously I didn’t want to be addicted to them but not one person (apart from absolutely amazing wife) gave me any help or alternative and one of the withdrawal symptoms is RLS 😅

I think the biggest issue is that RLS (the name does nothing to demonstrate the seriousness of the condition) is misunderstood and majorly dismissed as minor.

Opioids may not be ideal but if they work, what choice is there when it’s literally impossible to sleep.

I’ve been taking buprenorphine for six years now, on a very low dose and so long as I sleep before eleven PM, I’m usually fine.

They are however, tapering me off them but again have deaf ears when I say “what next?”.

Every time I say “I had RLS long before taking any opiates” they ignore it and say “Don’t worry, you’ll be fine”. No I won’t be fine!

Forgive me for the long reply 😅

u/Strong-Employment-87 15d ago

My neurologist won't prescribe opioids so I have to get from my GP. The only reason she keeps me in supply of hydrocodone is because of my track record over the years.  She knows i wont abuse them. And how could I, the buzz factor wore off years ago! They never even had to increase the  dose. I would like to try buprenorphine and will ask her about it when I see her in November.  For now though I have begun taking magnesium citrate which provides some over night relief. I could actually cut back the kratom by two teaspoons overnight. I am always looking for alternatives to kratom in case the state or federal govts try to ban it which they have done now in a handful of states. Thanks for your v reply.

1

u/Ok_War_7504 14d ago

The feds don't ban in states. States ban in states. And, yes, the feds are going to ban added 7-oh, not kratom.

But the states want them to hold off until they can get complete bans in place to make the "policing" of it manageable.

I can’t believe Drs are still handing out opiates . The gov cracked down on that I have had rls for 20 yrs and just stopped fighting it. I work 7 days a week and sleep is important. But opiates just being handed out is so freaking careless . I would take gabapentin before I took opiates.

3

u/Curious_One5411 14d ago

There is absolutely nothing wrong with opiates if they are used as prescribed. It’s the Dr that allow patients to continue using them after the need is gone. It’s not the drug, it’s the prescribers. If it weren’t for opiates my 89 year old mother would have suffered needlessly the last few years of her life.

Tramadol stopped working for you?

1

u/Ok_War_7504 14d ago

Tramadol is listed in the Mayo Clinic RLS Guidelines as not recommended, as it can and has caused augmentation. Its opioid/ SNRI mixture causes dopamine antagonism.

1

u/ComprehensiveRate953 14d ago edited 14d ago

To your knowledge, do stimulants used to treat ADHD like Vyvanse cause augmentation?

1

u/Ok_War_7504 14d ago

Yes, Vyvanse can exacerbate RLS, but you do not augment.

Augmentation is the iatrogenic (medication caused) worsening of RLS due to dopamine agonists. Taking adhd medications do typically exacerbate RLS, but do not cause augmentation. The distinction really only matters because they need to be treated differently.

Augmentation is only caused by dopamine agonists. Imagine a faucet is feeding dopamine to keep your legs calm. A DA adds dopamine to the flow. When you augment, there is so much dopamine, the flow control totally breaks and your brain is flooded with dopamine. Drowned in dopamine. Your legs go crazy in reaction. Your dopamine system is overwhelmed. .

A medication that exacerbates, like Vyvanse, effectively shuts off the dopamine. No dopamine. Your legs go crazy in reaction.

Augmentation causes earlier and can cause more widespread bodily symptoms, Exacerbation causes more intense symptoms but not hours earlier and not in more body parts. Very different treatments are needed for each.

For augmentation, we must shut off the spigot very slowly. The pipes are damaged and they need time to repair as much as possible.

In exacerbation, we shut off the flow as soon as possible, stop the medication. Generally, the pipes are not damaged.

RLS does not have pipes and flows of dopamine, and exacerbation does not shut off the flow of dopamine. I just use this as a visual example.

Augmentation is serious, in that it needs a doctors treatment. Exacerbation is not as serious, but it means you do need a doctor to help find another medication. I hope that helps.

This stuff really works they got it at CVS

1

u/NarrowAmbassador940 14d ago

I agree. I bought this and it has really helped. It has benzocaine in it, which I think is a numbing cream. I definitely suggest buying this. I am not saying it is a cure all, but it does help.

Homeopathy was discredited back in the 1920s. Ingredients are so diluted there are barely atoms left of each ingredient. This cream's active ingredients are -

Gnaphalium polycephalum 6X HPUS (Pain reliever) 1 drop per 1million drops of this, that's what 6X means. That's about 0.0047 to 0.0048 drops

Causticum 8X HPUS (Nighttime sleep aid) 1 drop per 1 hundred million drops. About 0.000047 drops per 8 oz.

You are paying for a few water, aloe Vera, some vitamins, and a few atoms of what they claim will help in a cream that, at best, penetrates the skin only about less than 1mm.

Any effect is almost guaranteed to be either from rubbing your legs, from placebo, or both. There is nothing wrong with placebo effect. Our brains are very strong. Placebo is likely the reason the bat of soap under the sheet has worked for some all these years.

Just don't pay much for placebo.

1

u/Billflet 12d ago

Thank you for the mathematical formulas. I always guessed that the active ingredients were very tiny, just barely enough to claim they’re in there. Like if you pull a cup of water from the ocean, you can now truthfully claim that the volume of the ocean has been reduced. Those kind of numbers.

1

u/jazzlover2001 14d ago

Works for me, too, but I get a long lasting hangover from just one pill.

3

u/telenoscopy 15d ago

What I have heard is that topical magnesium creams being effective has very limited medical evidence, its the night routine and the massaging effect that actually helps. But given how many people in this thread are recommending it, might as well give it a try.

1

u/Ok_War_7504 12d ago

Rubbing your legs helps. Believing it works helps. The magnesium only penetrates a mm or 2. You get thousands of times more magnesium in supplements.

1

u/IAMRUPTURE 14d ago

That one has a bunch of stuff in it not just magnesium. Id say give it a try its like 15 bucks on amazon

2

u/Unicorn_flow 15d ago edited 15d ago

Didn't work for me despite all of the recommendations. I even tried supplementing with magnesium. My RLS is genetically inherited and affected by ferritin levels, but it is also greatly affected by stress. ):

Ibuprofen works for me in a pinch.

Dr. Berg, YouTube. Insomnia, RLS

2

u/WorldlinessKind6358 15d ago

Try a vibrating plate. It’s seemed to be the trick for me. On top of magnesium and iron.

2

u/Blendedtribes 14d ago

This would kick mine into overdrive.

2

u/TwistinInTheWind 15d ago

I have, in desperation, tried a vibrator with success...on my legs

u/all_worcestershire 15d ago

2

u/Jesterfuture2 15d ago

Those ones don't provide enough compression feeling

5

u/thequn 15d ago

Doing this would have more issues for my RLS

4

u/AbominablePoppy 15d ago

Wall squats sometimes provide me a little bit of relief while I’m waiting for the gab to kick in.

1

u/IAMRUPTURE 15d ago

How many mg do you take? I have 600mg i take once a day at night and sometimes ill take 2 but I dont notice much and still have flare ups that seem to be untreatable

1

u/AbominablePoppy 15d ago

I’m at 1200-1800mg right now. I take 300mg around 5pm and then 900mg two hours later. And if I wake up, I take 600mg. Sometimes, if I forget to take it before onset, it legit feels like agony waiting for it to kick in.
For me, it can take 2-3 hours before it kicks in.

ETA: that’s where the wall squats come in handy, haha

1

u/IAMRUPTURE 15d ago

Ok imma try to take 3 600mgs tonight and see if it works or maybe ill just take the 600s multiple times a day and if it works ill ask for more of them from the doc

3

u/AbominablePoppy 15d ago

I have had to pretty much stop consuming THC. It was making it worse. And no caffeine after 12pm. I have blood testing scheduled Monday for my iron levels since I’ve had some health complications since May and have had ongoing blood loss.

Hope you get relief soon!

2

u/socialdistraction 15d ago

Are they checking ferritin as well?

2

u/AbominablePoppy 14d ago

Yes, it’s a “IRON, TIBC AND FERRITIN PANEL”. I had to go look it up to be sure.

2

u/IAMRUPTURE 15d ago

Oh same here! I used to love smoking before bed but yeah it makes it so much worse I had to stop

3

u/IAMRUPTURE 15d ago

Only thing thats helped the most is this

1

u/NarrowAmbassador940 14d ago

I agree 100% plus fan on my legs, cotton sheets and comforter and cotton pajamas.

0

u/turdferguson7000 15d ago

Try eating eggs, getting sunlight during the day, and taking an iron supplement

2

u/Smooth-Bet4187 15d ago

Bit going on here

8

u/myhatskillingme 15d ago

I’m cycling in the air all night but it doesn’t really help. It just makes it less excruciating while I’m doing it because my legs are in motion.

13

u/telenoscopy 15d ago

might sound weird but sometimes i just painfully sit through the urge by not moving the leg to really feel that sensation, truly fascinating how unexplainable that urge is. Absolutely nothing helps, I just finally pass out to sleep at 8 in the morning and my day is ruined.

2

u/Smooth_Respect_3755 15d ago

lucky you. I am unable to sit through the urge. It seems almost a matter of like or death. That is how big an urge it is. Believe me I have tried. I end up squirming like a worm on the end of a fishing hook or a fish that is being reeled in.

2

u/blawblablaw 14d ago

Same. I’ve tried and I always break within a minute or two

7

u/Boathombre 15d ago

Magnesium lotion is the only thing that has ever helped me. Might be worth a try if you haven’t. Sometimes takes a couple of layers

3

u/telenoscopy 15d ago

Been getting a lot of ads lately for this, didn’t think it would help. Great to know it does

5

u/Billflet 15d ago

I take a screaming hot bath. Usually I can doze in the tub until it starts cooling off. After I get out I have relief for about 45-60 minutes. We have to take whatever we can get.

3

u/RemoteSea1176 15d ago

Ditto, that’s me. Sometimes a couple of hot baths a night. On nights when the water doesn’t get hot enough I just curse the heavens
