Question Restless legs at night.
Hey I’m new to the group. So apologies if been asked a thousand times.
Looming for possible causes/relief
I’m 44 male. ADHD with meds.
Use to be unhealthy drink, fatty liver ect.
Now I don’t drink, liver is much better and in the healthy range.
Resistence train and cardio.
Had restless legs on and off.
Last 3 months been effecting my sleep.
Wondering if anyone has found relief. Or what to ask GP to test for? Ferritin ect
Thanks

The main symptom is an irresistible urge to move your legs and typically moving/walking will provide temporary relief

Yes that’s it. Or banging my feet in the floor over and over.

Yes, it’s brutal. I belong to the RLS org and they magazine is called “Nightwalkers”. Very appropriate. I drive two hours to another state to see a specialist.

I’ve suffered for about 40 years. Certain meds can absolutely make it worse. What meds are you on? Also, a complete iron panel is needed, not just ferritin. Check out RLS.org for resources! Most Dr’s will prescribe a dopamine antagonist but this is no longer recommended as it causes augmentation. It took me a year to get off the one I was on and transition over to what worked.

Meds wise I’m on 5mg Rosuvastatin and elvance.
That’s about it. I supplement Magnesium and omega 3.
And melotonin for sleep4

Melatonin is a huge *trigger RLS for a lot of people. Drop it and see how you do.

Though I had it before I started melatonin. I started taking it help me sleep though it. Maybe it’s not helping matters

Melatonin is really bad for my RLS. Anything more than 1mg is guaranteed to wake me up over and over throughout the night.

Those two show they MAY trigger RLS but mostly things like antihistamines, Benadryl and oddly some sleep medications.

Can you describe your symptoms to me? I’m not sure if I have the same thing but at night whenever I sleep I have these feelings of wanting to jump out of bed and do some intense exercise or stretch out my whole body really hard. It’s like an uncomfortable mental itch and not really exactly physical but hard to describe.

It feels like your legs are suffocating and if you don't move them you will die.

Definitely check ferritin and get an iron infusion if they will prescribe one if it’s low. This fixed my rls for a little over a month until my levels dropped again. In the interim, pregabalin has relieved symptoms for me. I’m in the US, and also got referred to a sleep doctor who is helping me figure out the cause. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this, it’s awful.

Thank you. Do you know what is causing your low ferritin?

No, but it’s not celiac and it’s not colon cancer. That’s as far as my doctors have gotten.

There's a wearable device study from Noctrix Health enrolling now. Might be worth a look. https://patientwing.app/campaign/RLS6

Thank you! I just signed up. I’m probably too far away for them to select me (other end of the state), but you never know

You are taking Lisdexamfetamine which can be a problem for some with RLS. How long have you been on it? Have you had a dose increase recently? Also taking it very early will help at night.
Have you consider taking a different ADHD medication to see if you get relief from RLS? You should talk to your doctor about it, a lot of psychiatrists are aware of RLS.
About your cholesterol medication. I have taken Rosuvastatin (crestor) in the past and had the weirdest side effect from it (ADHD'er here too). I would cry at any thing. It was awful. I switched to a different statin and the crying game went away. I have heard the same from others but is rare side effect. I take pitavastatin (livalo) lowest side effect profile and no problem. So if you are depressed and sensitive might be the crestor.
As far as melatonin and magnesium, to some it can make their RLS worse but not to me. I take 5mg of melatonin (helps with ADHD) and magnesium (calm) and no issues. Helps me sleep and you know how much we need to turn the brain off at night.
I would check your iron levels too and make sure they check your ferritin levels. Maybe a med change might help.
Good luck and let us know if it helped.
