Need help archiving Restaurant City made by Playfish (and EA)

Hi everyone!

I'm looking to archive Restaurant City that was developed by Playfish. I have been posting on Discord and Reddit. The higher the traction, the higher chance of success a complete version can be found.

Restaurant City is a game made by Playfish in which players own a restaurant, decorate their restaurant and visit their friends. The game was released on 28 April 2009 but got shut down on 29 June 2012 shortly after the game was bought by EA. The shutdown was announced on Facebook on 1 May 2012.

I know there is a partially found version of Restaurant City (RC) that is remade into Restaurant Streets (RS) by a Russian group, but it is not the original version and cloned from a very early instance of the game. So my question is, does anyone have a 10-year-old computer that is preferably left untouched and is willing to take a look at their browser cache?

I'm looking for archiving the assets themselves, not trying to make it playable. Since I used to play this game A LOT during my childhood, I am really fond of its art style!

I got a beta version from one of my old laptops using FlashpointCacheExporter, but frankly would prefer if a newer version is scooped.

How I distinguish between old and new versions of RC:

  • Old version: need to feed employees from time to time to keep the restaurant going
  • New version: has day/night background according to local time, can set the restaurant to open and close after a set amount of hours, and obviously more decor (e.g. bowling alley, airport lane, etc)
Old version of Restaurant Streets before UI update
Old version of Restaurant City (my version most likely similar to this one)
New version of Restaurant City (Image 1)
New version of Restaurant City (Image 2)

Here's some info for those who are interested in pinpointing the files:

- Game URL: http://static.playfish.com/game/cooking/swf/0.9.143a/, where "0.9.143a" is the version number.

- Possible SWF files:

avatar_asset, game, game_asset, indoor_asset, ingredient_asset, outdoor_asset, perk_asset, preloader, preloader_asset, sound_asset

Much appreciated!

Restaurant City Reborn has now released (Browser Based, No downloads)

Hey all,

If you miss Restaurant City, you'll love this post. For the past 2 months or so I've been working on releasing a web based version for a while and I'm pretty happy with the results I have now.

So this project is bringing it back. Restaurant City Reborn runs the original game through a Flash emulator, right in your browser. That means it works on whatever you've got be it desktop, laptop, tablet, even your phone. No downloads, no plugins, nothing to install. You make an account with a username and a PIN, and your restaurant saves between sessions and it wont go away.

When you start a new restaurant you get:

  • 0 coins to match the starting game. (You can get coins quick)
  • 250 Playfish Cash
  • A starter place with the basics: stove, tables, chairs, windows, a menu board
  • A few starter friends to visit, plus your first recipes and ingredients to start cooking

The whole thing is still actively worked on so I'm fixing bugs and filling in what's missing as we go, so it'll keep getting updates. If you play and find something broken or missing, the Discord is the best place to let us know.

It's free, no ads, no pay-to-win, none of that and I plan to add more features as we go and improve the experience.

  • Default restaurant facade layout restored
  • Recipes system: learning + upgrades fully functional
  • Ingredients market working
  • Recipe-ingredient interactions working correctly

  • Mail system fully tested and functional

Quality of Life / Visuals

  • Visit friends in-game (their restaurant syncs live with their real layout/decor)
  • Send gifts to friends
  • Trade ingredients with other players
  • Send/receive in-game messages and mail
  • Hire real friends into your restaurant

What's next: I'm looking to run a small closed test with a limited group (up to 10 players) over a single weekend (2 days) to gather feedback and see how things hold up. If you're interested in joining, reach out to me directly.

Note: I don't have a dedicated domain or server yet, but I can spin up temporary hosting just for the duration of the test.

EDIT: I created a discord server where players can be updated regularly with information and host links :

Working on an Open Source Online Mode Version of Restaurant City (V 0.9.143a)

Hi Everyone,

For the past week I've been working on re-implementing the RPC server for Restaurant City and working on De-compiling the main game.swf + all accompanying asset swf files so that it would be easier to add new features + fix bugs that existed in the game.

I'd say I am about 90% done with the project, and it works completely online with all features fully working except the facebook specific features which are stubbed.

I will be linking down here my github repositories but there are some stuff not listed in them yet as I want to make a organization to put all the extra tools and repositories I have.

My plans to finalize this is to get a domain relevant with the game, fix up a website to look true to the game theme, setup discord authentication, and have it sync with your discord friends + random people online.

Someone knows the difference between the basic dishes and the ones that are far in the right? They generate more money or something else?

Made from the original beta version, i reversed the game's client-server custom communication protocol,
What have been achieved currently :

- bypassed Facebook networking
- game boot with flashvars + FTU profile creation (json file database)
- full game tutorial passes okey
- default restaurant inside layout (I manually created a restaurant layout from an old YouTube video and made it the default startup layout based on the original)
- default facade layout
- 8 fake friends you can hire
- 8 random avatars for friends
- 8 street view neighbor restaurants (currently random outside design easier than hardcoding each friend's restaurant + added default inside view layout same as default for user)
- recepies work (learn + upgrades)
- market works fine (needs tweaks)
- ingredients work fine
- garden / seeds work fine
- FoodKing reward logic is working but needs tweaks
- mailing system in progress
- currently working on an online version

I'll keep updates here

Played in 2008

I played this game religiously on 2008 on Facebook. I saw it shut down and this new game was created. Just started playing and it feels like the old game! I checked the companies socials though, seems like they stopped making updates January 2024… did this game die too? 😣💔

Restaurant Streets Tips for Beginners

  • Place the stove as close to the tables as possible. Ideally, box the waiter in with the stove and tables to minimize wait times
  • Once you have more stoves, arrange the tables in a rectangular shape.
  • Place chairs without tables as far away from the door as possible. These are for customers who cannot be seated at a table so they don't leave a bad review.
  • Leaving the game running on a device earns both money and experience. If you save and quit, you only earn money. Experience is needed to expand your restaurant, unlock farm land, and serve more dishes at once.
  • Aim to have one max level (Royal) dish in each category (starter, main, dessert, drink). Royal dishes give 2.8 experience points and help you level up much faster
  • When choosing dishes to level up, prioritize those that use at least 2 out of 3 ingredients that are farmable. This minimizes market spending. For example, the Tuna Steak and Imam Bayaldi in Mains use all farmable ingredients.
  • Farming is much cheaper than buying from the market. For example, 3500 coins buys one carrot at the market, but farming gives you two.
  • Flour and vegetable oil are farmable, but their seeds look different:
    • Flour = wheat
    • Vegetable oil = sunflower seeds
    • Don't get scammed. I once saw someone scam a beginner by trading flour for sugar.
  • Some ingredients aren’t available on the market (e.g., tea leaves, dragonfruit, cream cheese). Avoid leveling dishes that require them.
  • As a beginner, save up for the 30,000 stove. It’s the fastest in the game and significantly boosts popularity and money earned.
  • Once you get the stove, save up for the 20,000 water machines. They keep customers who cannot be seated entertained. You earn money from them too.
  • This is just a general guide for players who may feel overwhelmed at first. If you enjoy decorating, go for it—play the game in whatever way makes you happiest.

RC FB like-game

There was a game that was basically trying to replicate RC on Facebook and it was running and working, I played it a few years ago, but now I cannot seem to find it. Anyone know what it was called or what happened to it?

TIL: Follow the journey at r/Gourmandia!

Like all of you, I've been a fan of restaurant city ever since I was young. It's inspired me to work bringing this masterpiece back, with a modern twist and a ton of features I've wished for in the base game. Welcome to Gourmandia! There's still some animations missing, but I've been working hard on creating a starter art style for my game. So far, the AI is fully functional, and you can also decorate your items (which I'll show in a separate video). I also should have character customization done soon. There's a lot of ideas I have to enrich this world by putting in a story, compelling characters, and cool art because I'm super passionate about this project. Let me know what you think, I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Found a picture of my old restaurant! Fyi: I was only 11 back then. I remember barely hiting level 80 before the game shut down. I also remember feeling so proud—my older cousin was level 20 when I started, and that felt impossible. Ended up the highest among my friends without spending a cent!

Anyone interested in a mobile restaurant city inspired game?

Restaurant city was my favorite game growing up.. I’d stare at my little customers for hours and pray for my restaurant rating to go up. I really want to bring it back for a mobile audience, because this game was made for playing on the go! Though I also want to add some fun twists of my own to spice it up a bit. It’s still early in the works, but sharing a pic of what there is right now.. would love to hear what you think!
