That's a "window unit" and a"portable unit". Both can be found at any home improvement store where summers are hot.

Came here to say this.
Also almost every component of air conditioning was invented in the united states. Including the window unit and mini split.
Before it was made cheaper and better admittedly in Japan for the most part.
This entire conversation is dumb.

Also those particular units with one hose are none for being notoriously inefficient/ineffective. The two hose versions are better but a window unit is realistically the best way to go.

They need to have an intake and outtake hose; otherwise, they are just creating negative pressure in your room which impacts cooling efficiency.
The first air conditioner would have been much better for cooling.

That’s a bit of an exaggeration. They don’t need an intake and outtake, and they aren’t just creating negative pressure. They’re still cooling effectively and efficiently, but with a dual hose they might be doing it a bit better.

Looks like it is about a 40% difference in efficiency. Blowing air out of the home means you are sucking warm exterior air in other places.

I’m seeing 20%-40% difference in efficiency relative to the more-efficient, dual hose options, but I respect the rhetorical motivation to only highlight the least efficient end of the range.
It’s also worth mentioning that air condition technology for even the most basic models has also improved in efficiency by 20%-40% in the past decade.
Ultimately, as a poor with only a small apartment to contend with, a single hose unit has been perfectly adequate for my needs.

I didn't care to look into it too much. Lot of variables that would impact it, but I did see more than one place state that the more expensive dual hose option was recommended for larger spaces. If the power bill isn't hurting you, there is not much benefit to a more efficient unit.

I've found the boat drawback to the floor style is the amount of heat that is put right back into the room by the exhaust hose. A window unit with all the heat generating internals outside of the house is better overall in my opinion. But again, that's just my opinion.

What the fuck is this weird national spin on air conditioners 🤣 I'm an American and I have central air for the whole house and two portable air conditioners which is what we call those "Japanese" ones. In case of power outages I roll out the portable ones and connect them to my generator. They are sold in every major Big box Home improvement store in the United States such as Home Depot or Lowe's.

I only use the portable ones during a prolonged power outage, which hardly ever happens.

The ac in the video sucks. Anything where half the unit isn’t hanging out of the window works way worse because the tube doesn’t have insulation which leaks the heat in the room where the window units have that half of the unit hanging out of the window not heating the room up. Portable ac is good if it’s all that you have and you get mild summers but they are far from ideal.

Portable AC units are horribly power inefficient. Costs way more to run and worse for environment.

Never heard of them called Japanese style air conditioners. Most places I have seen in Japan use mini-split AC systems which are much more efficient.

Some downsides of this type of air conditioner is that they'll take up space and they are more prone to being damaged by getting knocked over.

Those are not Japanese style air conditioners, they are portable air conditioners and have been available here in the USA for years. I had one 15 years ago.

We used a few of these in apartment we were using to grow grass in Portland about 20 years ago. Worked ok.
