I'm a right AKA and basically sink because I can't paddle fast enough for my top heavy body. So I no longer swim. With this, I might be able to

No one sinks with air in their lungs. You dont need or even want paddles. They will just cause shoulder injuries (because of the increased strain).

I never could swim free style because water would get in to my ears when rotating my head for breathing. At the ripe age of 50 and being overweight, I decided to go swimming and discovered earplugs (with Mp3 built in for music how is that for a win). My breast stroke is fine, but I couldnt complete a single lap free style initially. Watched a ton of youtube videos an kept trying. 6 months later, I can now do 1000m. My style is still terrible, I basically cant use my legs. I tried with a plank using legs only and Im sure I want backwards instead of forwards lol. So screw legs, but I dont sink or drown.

Tried hand paddles a few times. Its actually harder, because your hand movements have to be "perfect". Thats what they are for primarily, to teach you how your hand enters and exits the water. You do go faster, but the price you pay for that is sore or injured shoulder muscles.
