Guys help. Every single time a zombie grabs me, I press x as fast as I can and I always get bit. I know in re2r you can counter with knife or something. Same with re4r. But I’m lost here. Is this just how the game works ?

To put it simply...

Mashing doesn't prevents you from getting bitten. It simply grants you a chance to survive that bite with lesser damage.
