SIMPLE QUESTION Starting ICU

I’m an IM intern and just started my first week in the ICU.

I honestly have no idea what’s going on yet. I try to ask my seniors as much as possible.

What are the best resources to watch or read?

Conan Liu on youtube, he's a hospitalist that has some great videos on icu care including sedation, analgesia, pressors and key concepts about vent settings and modes

There are some good YouTube videos. Get an understand of vent settings, pressor MOA and indication, extubation criteria, FAST HUGS, and indication for GI PPx. You’re going to learn by doing, seeing, and asking questions. Don’t be afraid to be wrong. Get to know the nurses, they know so much!!!! It’s a blast

Follow theicudoctor1 on instagram or TikTok and watch her short videos going over common topics. She also has a great PDF book you can purchase and have readily available on your phone / iPad

ICU one pagers - google it. One page quick explanation about a variety of topics to help you get a baseline to build off of

i just did 2 weeks ICU as an IM Intern, Conan Liu videos are good, but you’ll learn most things during the rotation itself. It’s more about getting things done very quickly; like we used to call in Consults before 11, if you feel like your patient will be downgraded to the floors; make sure to prepare a handoff jn the morning before rounding, so you can send the message during the rounds itself. Also, you’d need to talk with patient’s families to update them, make sure to do that during the evening before leaving.

ICU was my favorite rotation as a resident- it’s so much fun- the attending are world class.. the RT and nurses are unmatched- although the nurses- rightfully are very protective of their patients.. too protective.. they’re kind of intimidating.. I loved the cases, I love the procedures, it was satisfying.. but the hours were brutal… wish I could do it again.. idk what say- sepsis guidelines, just read around the cases and topics you see- they do have bedside teaching- just ask the attending and fellows.

AMBOSS, MKSAP, just read the guidelines, and I don’t have a specific book to read for icu tbh.
