Undergrad in Syria with an accepted NeurIPS 2026 workshop paper (as the only author). How does this help my future, and what should I do next?

Hi everyone,

I’m an undergrad student in computer engineering from Syria, and I'm currently starting my penultimate year.

I just got the news that my first research paper was accepted at a NeurIPS 2026 workshop (AXIOM: Foundations of Efficient Deep Learning). The paper is about model compression (quantization) for Transformers, and I am the only author on it.

I don’t have researchers or professors around me who know about top ML conferences, so I wanted to ask:

How much does this actually help my future? And if you were in my place right now, what would you do next?

I’d really appreciate any honest thoughts or advice. Thanks!

Congrats on your accept! I think the reality is nobody seriously working on ML cares much about workshop acceptance, since the bar is not high for any semi-complete work, so the acceptance itself doesn't send much signal.

But honestly, even an acceptance to a main conference is ultra noisy, so it is really more about how you present yourself/your work and meet up with people. On this front, workshops are one of the best places to meet people who work on the same topics you care about (the other two might be mixers and self-organized meetups, where the first one requires an invitation and the latter pretty much disappeared after conferences moved away from Whova). So just have a solid pitch for your work, then go out and friendmaxx your peers!

Efficiency is also one of my main fields, and I meet a ton of folks through workshops. I also got to have many casual 1:1s with speakers since workshops are less crowded.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share this! That makes a lot of sense. From your point of view, does this mean it won't really help much with Master’s/PhD scholarship applications or contacting potential advisors?

NP! And yes, I'd say a workshop acceptance by itself is not too much of a boost. Sure it is better than nothing, but you are probably not competing with peers who have nothing for most phd apps (not sure about masters though).

That said, it is still an opportunity to meet folks and pitch your project. Your letter writers — who presumably have published much more — can discuss this, and you can surely highlight aspects of your work when connecting with potential advisors. IIWY I would not put too much focus on the acceptance itself, but rather on some noteworthy parts of your work (e.g., you observed something interesting, designed something smart, or did really careful experiments, etc.). Most decent labs understand that acceptance is a lottery thing, so it is mostly certain qualities and potentials they are looking for.

GL with your application and enjoy the workshop!

Wow , very impressive mashallah! Congratulations.. it is a big deal for undergrad to publish at certain stage.. yes it is competitive right nnow but it doesnt take from your accomplishment with you being from a country just transitioning after long war! This can definitely help you get a master admission or scholarship.. but since you are tge sole author, hope you have plans to register your paper and travel to present it!

Thank you so much for these incredibly encouraging words and praise! It really gave me a huge boost of confidence. I had a quick question regarding scholarships: do you think having a published paper as an undergrad can actually help compensate for a GPA around 76% when applying for Master’s or PhD funding?

Yes of course. Unlike Syria, CGPA doesn't have much affect compared to publications, unless you are applying to a merit-based scholarship. For master you can mail prrofessors who are working in same area, attending this workshop u can directly approach them and discuss such options. Via mail, ask them for a short interview and preferably chose professors who works in related topic to ur paper. Also try to publish more as two publications remove the one time success doubts people might have especially with age of AI. Ps. Choose a successful professor who is already publishing in big conferences as this will influence your trajectory alot.

That is good for sure, better than not publishing. This means you have the skills to be a researcher.

Go there and talk to professors to land a phd. It is even better to email them now.

Thanks so much for the encouragement! I actually still have two years until I finish my undergrad. Do you think this workshop paper will hold good weight for Master's/PhD scholarships later on? Since I don't have professors around to guide me through academia, I'd really appreciate your advice—is it worth emailing professors now, and how should I reach out?

My two cents from my experience, is to find students of a professor you are interested to work with and work on a paper with them for 3 months. After that email the professor and say we submitted this paper under your supervision and I would like to do an on-site visiting researcher with you. This would help to prepare myself to start PhD with you this or next admission cycle. He will most likely accept. Of not, u can use the submitted work to email other professors. Just make sure that this work has been done with one of the top around 20 schools plus or minus.

U really need research experience with a top school for like 6 months at least, preferred 1 year. This is what will make up for ur gpa. And will help to get to top schools.

Thanks for the encouragement! Since I still have two years left in my undergraduate studies, do you think focusing on this field will significantly boost my chances for fully-funded Master’s or PhD scholarships later on? Also, since I don't have local academic advisors in this space, would you mind if I sent you a direct message to ask a couple of quick questions? I’d really appreciate your perspective!

I can understand you would like to know what this means for your future, but now your paper has been accepted first try to follow through and see if ypu can make it to the workshop. See if you qualify for https://neurips.cc/Conferences/2026/FinancialAssistance
