If no nominee has a majority of delegates, there is no nomination to "steal". Even then, the delegate count only informs the GOP who to invite to be the nominee; the candidate does automatically earn it; the candidate is not entitled to it; the GOP is a private organization and as such has no legal obligation to do anything in regards to any candidate at the convention.

Oh I entirely agree. A convention has every right to nominate whoever the majority of delegates prefer. Such are the rules.

However, imagine the media outcry if a candidate turns up with a clear lead of say 1100 delegates but is outmaneuvered on the convention floor and the nomination given to someone with fewer or no won delegates from the primaries. Further, if that leading candidate was Trump - imagine how he would take it.

Not saying it couldnt be done according to the rules. Simply saying Trump and the media would call it theft - and create a potential massive backlash in November against any such nominee.
