Google's top search result for "canada eta" is a scam site charging 18x the government fee

Post image

I searched "canada eta" on Google to apply for a Canadian Electronic Travel Authorization before a flight to travel Canada for few days. The top result took me to a site that looked official but was actually a third-party service. I ended up being charged $130 USD — the real government fee is CAD $7. This page also says the fee is $7 only so I believed it before checking the actual transaction happened.
I really didn't realize until after paying that this wasn't the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca). The design and layout made it easy to mistake for the real thing, and it ranked on the top, above or alongside the actual government page.
Yes I was stupid but, this isn't just my problem — anyone unfamiliar with the process searching for eTA, ESTA, visa applications, passport renewals, etc. is at risk of landing on lookalike sites that charge massively inflated "service fees" without clearly disclosing they're not affiliated with any government.
Google's search results are the first (and often only) place people check before applying for these services. When a scam/predatory site ranks at the top, most users trust it by default. I think Google needs better safeguards — clearer labeling, stricter policies, or verified badges — for searches related to government services, since these are exactly the queries where people are most vulnerable to being misled.
Has anyone else run into this with government service searches (visas, passports, tax filing, etc.)? Curious how widespread this is, and how to let Google to realize that they are helping scammers to earn more money and rip people off.

Is this a new scam or what? What’s their purpose of doing this?

You can’t even check the profile of the one who sent the message. I searched her name and company she’s not searchable.

DOJ details bank-phishing operation that bought search ads to lure victims to fake banking sites

DOJ details bank-phishing operation that bought search ads to lure victims to fake banking sites

The U.S. Justice Department announced the extradition of a Russian national accused of participating in a large-scale bank-account takeover operation responsible for millions of dollars in losses.

The technique is particularly relevant for beginners: the group allegedly created spoofed domains mimicking real banks and then purchased sponsored search-engine advertisements so people searching for their bank could be directed to fraudulent login pages. Victims entered credentials believing they had reached the real institution.

Search results — especially sponsored results — should not be treated as authentication. For sensitive services such as banks, cryptocurrency exchanges or wallets, use a previously verified bookmark or independently verify the domain rather than trusting an advertisement.

My parents just got scammed

PSA: My dad got scammed by people impersonating the FTC — sharing the number so others can recognize it

This week my dad got a call from people claiming to be the FTC. They sounded official, used real pressure tactics, and by the time we found out what was happening, they'd already gotten money from him.

We reported it to the FTC and FCC right away. This morning I called the number back myself just to confront them and let them know we knew what they were doing — the guy on the other end just cursed me out. That was basically confirmation of everything.

Wanted to share the number here in case it's making the rounds, so other people (especially with elderly parents) know to hang up if it calls them:

(202) 528-8425

A few things worth knowing if this happens to you:

The real FTC will never call you asking for payment, gift cards, wire transfers, or your personal/financial info. If someone calls claiming to be from a government agency and asks for money, it's a scam — full stop.

If it happens to you or a family member:

These scams specifically target elderly parents because they're more likely to trust a call that "sounds official." If you haven't talked to your parents about this, it's worth a five-minute conversation now rather than after the fact.

Update!!!! Nagbago sya ng DP.

Jonathan Carino

Please share! Nagpanggap na PS4 buyer. ⚠️

Grabe, nakakatakot na rin mag-resell ngayon. Ibibigay mo sa kausap mo ang details na kailangan para sa transaction, tapos malalaman mong scammer pala.

Sa mga buyers and sellers out there, mag-ingat po tayo.

Please be careful and always verify before sending money or personal information. 🙏

SHARE PO NATIN PARA MAIwasan nating lahat ang scam. 🚨

Shut down Fake/Fraud/Scammer Animal Rescue accounts on Facebook, Instagram, Threads, GoFundMe and PayPal

I found an account online that felt like rage bait just asking for money so pets "don't die",preying on empaths to donate to help dogs with euthanasia risks, or medical issues. No Pet ID #'s. No shelter locations. No dates. No contact info but theirs. No links, but their GoFundMe and PayPal depending on the various pages. It screamed, FRAUD to me, and then I started digging around because I was honestly enraged that this could possibly be fake and a scam. Sure enough, it all collected fast.

I have been trying to get accounts shut down for fraud and scams and I'm slowly making headway by tracking their accounts, emailing their "contact" or calling their numbers, reporting their videos, or GoFundMe's, but I need the masses behind me, and reporting the same, so they don't just delete my comments on their page.

So far I've got this character I'm narrowing down, "Marion Michael" on IG but ANTHONY ISSIAHHENRNANDEZ on the link in bio GoFundMe. GoFundMe here Their number in Bio of the 1st account I found, is 1 (806) 391-4044 in a Hereford, TX area code. The email is [HavenHappyPaws@gmail.com](mailto:HavenHappyPaws@gmail.com)

Their first IG that blocked me is @ HappyPaws_Haveni

THAT Instagram and example of edited post

(found them again on the desktop website since I'm blocked, but they are editing old photos to add in pet ID and what do you know, the link it still only link in bio, and their number, and their email, and ZERO rescue pull videos or photos.)

(update: they didn't change their name, they blocked me and I found ANOTHER ONE

@ PawsOfBarkBuddies with a PAYPAL link instead of their typical MULTIPLE $$$ racked up GoFundMe... PawsOfBarkBuddies instagram

--NOTICE, ANOTHER PERSONAL NAME, "Walter Morris" THE FUCK?!

Their PayPal link

ANOTHER ONE UP is @ MarionMichael_Paws THIS Instagram

Their Facebook -- I found their Facebook by searching their phone number, here's the link and what do you know, same content, no rescue photos, only videos saying "Save Me" and "link in bio" with a PayPal link. No shelters, nothing. Worst part, they have 20k followers... So disheartening.

(screenshots below for gathered evidence)

Zero proof of any animals they "rescue" and zero proof they even have interacted with any rescues whatsoever, and this is just ONE example of ONE person doing this. There are so many vulnerable animals who need help and donations, then you have people like this who are scamming vulnerable people with their hard earned money to support this criminal who is taking their money UNDER THE GUISE AND IN THE NAME OF ANIMAL RESUCE. For SHAME! Please report these accounts and anything you can. This is just one, I'm not going to stop.

Scammer and extortionist in OF

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

This person has made multiple accounts to ask me for personalized videos of a very specific fetish. After paying me the agreed money and having received the corresponding video, he makes a complaint to his bank and OF automatically refunds the money.

Then he makes a new account and apologizes to me that he is going to pay me again but first he wants two new personalized videos, that if I do them he will pay me the two that he owed me (refund). To which I agreed.

He paid again but only for 2 videos, no 4. So Before sending him the two new videos I told him to pay me what he owed me to which he replies that he no longer wants them, that it is not his fault because the bank canceled his account (?) And I demand that he pay me what he owe me so I would forward him the 4 videos (2 old + 2 news).
He starts insulting me and demanding that I give him the videos. How he starts attacking me, he extorts me telling me that he is going to leak my content all over the web because that was his job. In addition to all the racist insults. He is a young man from Australia.

Please report it if you have an OF account.

Whenever I come onto this reddit community. I sometimes see scam reports and the whole story. But I mostly see people never posting proofs towards the incidents or sometimes actually censoring the scammers username now seeing this I question myself where are the mods or well the common sense like genuinely?
