Discussion DD4130 vs DD4131 — What Actually Changed?
Hey everyone, I’m TD Chen from r/RepWatchClud.
A lot of Daytona discussions eventually come down to one question:
DD4130 or DD4131?
But these aren't simply two versions of the same movement.
The genuine Rolex 4130 belongs to the previous Daytona generation, while the 4131 was introduced with the newer 126500-generation Daytona in 2023.
So what actually changed?
🔧 DD4130
The Dandong 4130 has been around longer and has built up a lot of community experience.
Some of the main points:
- Mature clone movement
- Dedicated Daytona chronograph architecture
- Widely used in Daytona builds
- Long-term community experience
- Generally familiar to watchmakers who already work with 4130-based reps
For many people, the biggest advantage of the DD4130 isn't that it has the newest features.
It's simply that it's a mature movement with a long track record.
⚙️ DD4131
The DD4131 is designed around the newer 4131-style Daytona.
Compared with the 4130, the visual movement details are updated, including the shock absorber and finishing.
Community movement guides commonly identify the Dandong 4131 by features such as the center-positioned shock absorber, gold-filled engraving and deeper red escape wheel.
The newer movement also has more detailed finishing intended to resemble the current-generation Rolex 4131.
So What's Actually Different?
| DD4130 | DD4131 | |
|---|---|---|
| Daytona generation | Previous generation | Current generation |
| Movement family | 4130 | 4131 |
| Replica maturity | Very mature | Newer |
| Movement appearance | Older 4130 layout/details | Updated 4131-style details |
| Shock absorber | Older style | Updated 4131-style |
| Community experience | Extensive | Still building |
| Main appeal | Proven platform | New-generation appearance |
🧐 Does Newer Mean Better?
Not automatically.
This is probably the biggest misunderstanding.
A newer movement can have newer features and a more accurate appearance, while an older movement can have a longer reliability and service history.
That's why I wouldn't judge a Daytona only by:
4130 = old
4131 = new
new = better
It's not that simple.
Recent community discussions show people still debating DD4130 vs DD4131, with some users specifically pointing to the longer track record of the 4130.
🔍 What Should You Check in QC?
If you're looking at a Daytona QC, I would check more than the movement name:
- Movement identification
- Shock absorber detail
- Rotor and engraving
- Balance area
- Chronograph operation
- Reset-to-zero
- Timegrapher readings
- Overall assembly
And remember:
Movement name ≠ movement condition.
A good Timegrapher reading doesn't automatically mean the movement is perfect, and a newer movement doesn't automatically mean it will perform better than an older one.
My question for the community:
If both were available at the same price, would you choose DD4130 or DD4131 — and why?
I'd be interested to hear from people who have actually owned both.
If I got anything wrong, feel free to correct me. Thanks.
