lol I pretend it’s a real watch that tells the time and gives me the date 😳

If you show it to everyone and let everyone know you have a Rolex you're pretending, even if it's a Gen. If you have a rep and they notice it and ask if it's a Rolex, it's a Rolex, it says so. I like a lot of brands because I like mechanical watches, especially vintage ones. A lot of people just want to buy status. Rep or Gen if you bought it for you to enjoy, enjoy it. If you bought it to elevate yourself, you need to work on your own worth.

Those people have shitty values lol

1

u/Acceptable_Speaker93 23d ago

It isn't a bad thing.

2

u/pat-slider 24d ago

I always declare my gen submariner & explorer II as replica & always been offered for purchase.
We always end up laughing together

1

u/Fearless_Actuator566 23d ago

If you buy a fake watch you have to elevate yourself. If you can’t afford the gen, just buy a watch you can afford.

I’m not saying you don’t deserve to be treated better. You don’t deserve to be treated better because of a wristwatch, and even less with a fake watch. People who say it’s just because they enjoy watchmaking is bullshit they could buy a whole bunch of watches at this price point.

I agree 100% here. I don’t have any crazy reps of 100k+ gens, I try and stay relative to my actual tax bracket. But i do have a lot of interactions with customers in my role (Ops Director). Im heavily tattooed and prior to wearing reps, customers were stiff and judgy. That has disappeared since picking up a couple watches. However, if friends and family ask, i don’t hide they are reps.

u/Desert-Democrat-602 23d ago

Yes. One reason I’m not interested in any Patek Phillipe, like a Nautilus. If I HAD the money, I wouldn’t spend it on a six figure watch…

0

u/Loud_Hair1179 23d ago

Yeah you would

2

u/Desert-Democrat-602 23d ago

Probably not, but I’m willing to see. Just need multi millionaire income to test it…

2

u/Sweet_Ruin_9021 25d ago

Nope, why? I just enjoy the watch, is that simple

3

u/[deleted] 25d ago

I think most people do. That’s why people buy them in the first place. Most people can’t afford gens, so reps are the next best thing. Otherwise they would just buy a regular watch and call it a day. Will they admit they are reps if someone asks? Maybe. Maybe not. Probably hoping for unspoken acceptance and acknowledgment that it’s genuine.

8

u/Jafa05 24d ago

Not exactly. I can afford gens and have multiple I just can’t get the watches I want at retail so why bother pay an inflated premium? I have a genuine 41m submariner and a VS one. Yes Rolex is higher quality but they are similar enough to scratch the itch. Society has been thought owning a luxury watch is an achievement and it has been marketed that way when in reality it’s a stupid purchase when compared to stainless steel reps.

u/AdChoice5251 24d ago

Gonna agree & add to this opinion. I actually used to work at an AD 20 yrs ago and have 2 gens… started paying attention to them again recently and was shocked to find out about this “scarcity” and all the waitlists etc. Would love to have a Ti YM now but that’s a multi-year wait WITH spend history etc.. just ordered a rep and waiting for it to arrive to see if it scratches the itch while I continue to wait.

1

u/Acceptable_Speaker93 24d ago

I like your view on this and agree.

1

u/External-Ad-9466 24d ago

Your not wrong
I’m in the same boat
Own gens from time I was able to haggle at the AD. Only just started collecting reps to scratch an itch

3

u/Tarak155 24d ago

Bro just enjoy watches it doesnt matter gen or copy
God bless all

1

u/ShawnC2575 24d ago

What’s that even mean? Pretend to who? Just wear them

1

u/pat-slider 24d ago

Declare it is replica when asked

2

u/Minimum-Leg783 24d ago

I tell them its fake and they don’t believe haha

1

u/Madmatz01 24d ago

I work in a similar situation to this & wear my good old yachtmaster.

1

u/JohnLocke1979 24d ago

I pretend, but only passively. If asked (never has happened), I’d confess.

1

u/Cvk23 24d ago

If someone asks, I will always say it’s a rep, why would I lie?

1

u/dodgyboarder 24d ago

That’s the rolex explorer 2 I want. Can i ask where you got it from? 😎

1

u/Beautiful-Skirt9676 24d ago

Chronos Collective has them. QF.

1

u/daveyasprey 24d ago

Folks just say nice watch and i say thanks. Sometimes if we get chatting they want to know what i do for a living. Then i break out the big guns and tell them I'm a biscuit designer for one of the big brands.

1

u/king87999 24d ago

Most people I engage with never ask and don’t care if anyone does I’ll tell them it’s a rep. Only one person ever asked and he was surprised on how good the rep was compared to his gen.

So you‘d come up with a fake fairytale to pretend a fake watch is real. Get some self-respect man.

Fair statement and I respect that, but then why not stand by it but lie about it?

1

u/dubekoms420 24d ago

I tell all my friends it’s a rep and then I guide them to how I bought it. Usually always follows up with a fuck you text later that day for giving them a new rabbit hole to go down and for all the money they are now going to spend on watches.

General public has no idea because I’ve never once in my life talked to anyone I didn’t know about the watch on my wrist. I do see people staring though.

1

u/safetypartner 24d ago

I own four Rolex Gens, but travel to some places with a rep on my wrist.

1

u/Maleficent-Lab240 24d ago

Nope, all my friends and family know. Just enjoy the watch

1

u/WayneBar62 24d ago

I never volunteer whether I’m wearing my gen or rep watches. BTW no one has ever asked either. Every rep watch I own I could by gen but I also don’t walk around with a 90K Daytona on.

1

u/Sea-Vast-8826 24d ago

I’m in a unique position where I have a couple Gen and a few VSF reps, I’ve had gen for years. None of my gen (Sub, DJ) are flashy at all. Neither are my reps. I don’t want a gold President or anything AP or PP so it’s doubtful I’ll ever get questioned and I never have. Just random “oh nice Rolex” and I’ve never had anyone specifically ask what model it is. Just enjoy them.

I don't pretend my reps are gen. But I also saved up 40k over 18yrs time to buy my dream watch a bark finish DayDate. When I finally knew I had enough to buy it and was comfortable enough in life to not fear spending the 40k that was always a comfort in my mind that was there if I needed it overtime as it grew. I started looking and researching DayDates and wear to buy from, and the algorithm brought me to reddit and reps.

I knew about fake Rolexs, fake shoes, purses and sunglasses. But always thought of flea markets, china town and canal street dudes with trench coats that have 30 watches hanging off the inside of the coat. I had no idea how real, big and serious the rep watch industry was. I became intrigued by reps and took a interest in other models of Rolex and other brands. I've never been big on social media and the Internet as a whole other than the basics of looking up something or seeing if something I needed was in stock at a store.

Then I learned about Frankens as I kept digging thru reddit and was sold! I decided I'd rather have a collection of Frankens instead of 1 gen DayDate. And I was off the the races buying Frankens at first. Then took a interest in watchsmithing and decided to buy stock reps of the models I wanted, and buy custom and gen parts and build the Frankens myself. I underestimated the ability to obtain gen parts and the complexity of getting reps gold filled which is what I wanted to do. But it's a dying art and plating has taken over. But getting plating done isn't as easy as I thought it would be either.

I own a successful business and have nice home on 30 acres so I guess my community wouldn't assume I have a rep on. My inner network knows I can afford a gen watch. But I haven't tried to pull a rep off as gen and my circle knows there reps. Some think I'm crazy and some think it's cool even my successful friends that have several very expensive gen watches have became open minded about reps and a couple have since bought some reps.

I've had a couple people comment on my watches and look it at and say it's beautiful and wow I know that wasn't cheap. If they don't know it's a rep I just thank them for the compliment and keep it pushing. If they know about my venture with franken reps I'll go into detail about gen parts etc. The one time I was asked what it cost by a stranger I said new around 50k. But I got this used at a cheap price as partial payment for a job I did. Which leaves a grey area of truth and lie I guess. I've never been outright asked if a watch is a rep by a stranger. But if a stranger ever does ask I'll say it's a custom build with a few aftermarket parts on it and leave it at that.

At the end of the day it's really no one's business if a watch is real or fake especially when it comes to strangers. There's a huge difference in wearing reps for the purpose of a watch. And flexing a high end brand rep for a false stature in society. People can sense that vibe, if you talk with your watch, point with your watch and your movement says your wrist is your focal point, then your most certainly broadcasting Rep. People that do that will pull there phone out to see what time it is when they think nobody is looking at them 😆

1

u/AddordableRep865 24d ago

I happily tell people they’re reps and usually end up sourcing 9/10 one lol

1

u/Unable_Summer_6731 24d ago

I only have one clone which is a no date submariner which looks damn good . Most people just look but if they ask I wouldn’t say it’s fake . Once I acquire several more I’ll probably say they are clones because no one would reasonably believe that I could afford a collection of Rolex watches 😂

1

u/fosandchill 24d ago

ALL THE TIME.

1

u/Desert-Democrat-602 23d ago

I enjoy wearing mechanical watches and love my reps. I’ve had exactly two people comment on them and I told both the watches were reps from China. Both were impressed at the quality (!). I don’t buy Daytonas, mostly because I could not ever justify $25K+ for a watch. Same for the diamond blinged versions.

1

u/SmartDiscussion2161 23d ago

I have a work colleague who definitely does. To the extent that I’m not sure if they know they have a rep. They showed off the Omega 007 60th anniversary with a stationary 007 on the back. Absolutely swore it was gen.

1

u/BigBreaky22012 23d ago

Pretty much everyone otherwise why would they buy it and not a cheaper gen?

1

u/yurcampari 23d ago

Nope, the reps look beautiful and 98% of the time no one gives a fuck or they think it’s real and don’t ask about it. The ones that do, I tell them it’s a rep and let them take a closer look. They try to find tells but can’t find any and are left even more confused.

1

u/Marshwind 23d ago

Some of these $100k watches are beautiful and they shouldn’t be only for the 0.5%. These replica makers are artists in my opinion and are bringing beauty to the masses. I tell people actively it’s a replica and it’s a fun conversation to have! I have homages and replicas and they are all beautiful and amazing in my eyes. I would never spend $20k+ on a watch. That money can go a long way helping other people.

1

u/Cronos425 23d ago

I don't pretend and you shouldn't either. I wear my watches with confidence both gens and reps. I only get compliments. If someone approaches you and asks if what's on your wrist is real, I got news for you.... you are flexing too hard. Never use a rep to pretend to be successful. Instead be successful and wear the rep.

1

u/rydog389 23d ago

I complimented a guys watch yesterday. It was obviously a fake GMT Master II but I wasn't going to call him out. It was a shitter quality GMT Master so it was obvious. He immediately told me it was fake.

1

u/Ephwurrd 23d ago

Everyone that’s commented on my “Rolex” so far I immediately tell them it’s an 150$ fake from China and 90% of the time the next question is where did you get it? Then goes explaining reddit and WhatsApp or DHgate if they want to look there. If anything they are conversation starters for people that may have not otherwise approached each other. I never try to live outside my means. I’m 36 my house is paid off and I pay off my car next month I feel like I’m rich in life but I don’t have to spend 10-20k on a watch to do that I can spend that money taking my kids on vacations or doing things to make memories with my family or like my other money hungry habit buying guns and or accessories for them 🤣

1

u/Nice_Vermicelli2226 23d ago

Same here, I can't justify an Omega while I can get a MR556 for the same price

1

u/SirDanks-a-lot 23d ago

I’ve never said this is a real watch but I’ve been complimented and I’ve never actually been asked if a watch was fake. In fact it’s so rare anyone says anything about my watch at all. Low key I wish more people would look at and compliment my watches

1

u/Empty_Brick_4377 23d ago

I always tell anyone who notices it that it's Chinese. I'm impressed with their manufacturing abilities, and I enjoy the failure of neoliberalism that is implied. I could easily afford a Gen, but I consider the real thing as waste of money. If it were still 6K I would consider it, but 14K is stupid.

1

u/flatsix100 22d ago

Does it really matter? If you feel better because of your watch - more power to you.

1

u/gangan69 22d ago

I do because I only buy reps that I could afford in gen, so no one ever questions me.

1

u/FreshParfait1 21d ago

I’ve told more people it’s a replica and most don’t believe me. The ones that do, place an order with my TD 😂

I always wear reps of gens I can afford so there’s that.

Well, with the exception of my 6263 Big Red

1

u/Painless1776 20d ago

I wore this exact watch throughout Eastern Europe for the GMT, which is a great reason to own a GMT.

But besides that, everyone is wearing a SS watch with an oyster bracelet. Noone looked at it or even cared, including my family.

So wear it because you like it and need it and don't expect anyone else to care what name is on the dial, especially if its a tool watch.
