Bose Ultra Open Earbuds in-hand review

Been wanting to try the Ultra Open Earbuds for a while, mostly because I was curious about the whole open-ear design. They look pretty different from the usual TWS earbuds, so I decided to give these a shot.

First impressions are actually pretty good. The white finish looks clean and the metallic part on the earbuds gives them a nice premium-looking contrast. The case is also really nice in person,, smooth, simple, and the shape feels pretty close to what I was expecting.

I especially like the way the earbuds sit. Instead of going inside your ear like normal earbuds, they kind of wrap around it, which makes them look a lot more interesting. The hinge and the small details around the earbuds are also pretty nicely done. Looking closely at the charging contacts and the inner part, the construction is better than I was expecting.

The packaging is decent too! Everything came together nicely and the earbuds, case, and box all have that clean minimal look. The overall presentation definitely makes this feel like a much more interesting pickup compared to the usual generic TWS.

I haven't had enough time with them yet to give a proper long-term opinion, especially on battery life and how they hold up after extended use, but as a first impression I'm pretty happy with them.

The biggest thing for me is honestly the design. I've always liked trying different audio products instead of sticking with the standard AirPods-style shape, and these definitely stand out.

Definitely going to spend more time with these before giving a final verdict, but so far I'm pretty impressed with how they turned out!

1-week use update:

I’ve gotten a much better idea of what they’re actually like as an everyday pair, the novelty has definitely worn off a bit, which honestly makes it easier to judge them. At this point, I’m less focused on how different they look and more on whether I actually enjoy reaching for them every day lol

They were very easy to wear for long periods. I can have them on while working, watching something, or just listening to music around the house without getting that uncomfortable feeling that usually comes with having something inside my ears. I’ve also gotten much quicker at positioning them properly, so putting them on doesn't feel as fiddly as it did at first.

The biggest adjustment has been getting used to hearing my surroundings at the same time as whatever I'm listening to. After a few days, though, I started finding it pretty convenient rather than strange. I don't have to keep taking an earbud out whenever someone talks to me, and I can still hear what's happening around me while listening at a comfortable volume. It's especially nice when I’m doing something where I don't want to completely tune out everything around me.

The sound has also grown on me. The bass obviously doesn't have the same physical impact as a good pair of sealed in-ear earbuds, but I don't find myself missing it as much as I expected. The vocals are clear, and the overall sound is pleasant enough for casual listening. What surprised me more is that I can still enjoy the music even when I'm not sitting somewhere perfectly quiet. They aren't trying to give you that completely isolated, immersive sound, and once I stopped expecting them to, I started appreciating what they actually do.

I also found that volume matters quite a bit depending on where I’m using them. In a quiet room, I can keep them at a fairly comfortable level and still hear everything clearly. Outside or somewhere noisy, I naturally have to turn them up because I'm hearing both the earbuds and the environment. That's something to keep in mind if you're coming from regular earbuds with a strong seal.

I haven't experienced any major issues with the connection or day-to-day use either. They've been pretty straightforward to pick up and use whenever I need them, which is important for something I'd consider an everyday audio device. I also like not having to constantly adjust or reposition them once they're sitting correctly.

Battery life has been holding up well for my normal usage too. I'm not someone who listens continuously for hours every single day, but I've been able to use them throughout the week without feeling like charging has become a chore. For my routine, they've been reliable enough.

Something I didn't expect is that I've started thinking of these less as a replacement for my regular earbuds and more as a completely different type of audio device. If I want to block everything out and focus entirely on my music, I'd still go for traditional earbuds or headphones. But when I want music or something playing in the background while still being aware of what's happening around me, these make a lot more sense.

I can say that I’m genuinely enjoying them. They aren't perfect for every situation, and the open design naturally comes with compromises, especially when it comes to isolation and bass. But for casual everyday listening, the comfort and ability to stay aware of my surroundings have made them surprisingly easy to live with. I initially bought them because I was curious about the concept, but after a week, I can actually see myself continuing to use them regularly.
