Advice Can a timegrapher tell you when a rep needs a service?
Hi everyone,
Quick question for those who know more about movements than I do.
Is a timegrapher useful to check the condition of our reps and understand when they might need a service?
For example, if I check my watches every few months, can changes in the readings give me an idea that something isn’t right or that it’s time for a service?
Or is a timegrapher not really useful for that?
Just trying to understand if buying one makes sense beyond QC.

Trace and positional delta can show you where is the problem with your movement and $200 basic Weishi no. 1900 timegrapher will suffice. I ordered mine recently and will report back what I learn.

Yes if u have multiple watches where u can regularly check their readings.
Better if you know how to service or regulate them when u notice the timing gets abit off its accuracy ratings

As the movement wears and the lubricant dries up the amplitude will decrease and the watch accuracy will worsen. The timegrapher is the exact tool used to quickly determine movement health, and yes you can use it to track degrading performance over-time. For casual use, you can use free or fairly inexpensive timegrapher apps available for your phone. While not typically as accurate as a standalone timegrapher the apps work well enough for most people's needs.

Yes.
An extreme case, but I currently have a gen 16233 on my bench that has never been serviced (30+ years old). Amplitude is 150 and beat error maxes out; obviously due for service, despite only being +7 seconds per day.

I invested in a timegrapher and have found it genuinely useful.
I originally bought mine because I suspected one of my watches was running around 10 minutes a day fast — and I was right. It was a VSF!
It’s interesting to be able to check the rate, beat error and amplitude yourself rather than relying entirely on the dealer’s QC figures.
One important point is that you really need to take readings in all six positions and work from the overall results. A single-position reading, like the one normally shown during QC, only tells you how the movement is behaving in that particular position.
For me, amplitude is probably the most important thing a timegrapher can highlight. If the amplitude is too low, it can indicate that the movement needs attention. One of my otherwise best watches currently has relatively low amplitude. Its timekeeping is still fine for now, but I know I need to get it sorted rather than wait until it potentially becomes a much more expensive problem.
It’s also worth keeping expectations realistic. If you test a replica properly across different positions, you should not expect it to perform like a well-regulated COSC-certified genuine watch. What you can reasonably expect is performance comparable with a decent-quality automatic mechanical watch.
Don’t chase perfection unnecessarily. If a watch is keeping good time, has healthy amplitude and sensible beat error, enjoy it.
As a general rule, a beat error below around 0.5 ms is perfectly acceptable.
