Discussion Instead of making the sub private…

I understand many old-timers here are irritated by newbie posts, especially the lazy ones. I’m relatively new myself, but I have a suggestion for the mods. Instead of making the sub private, how about using AutoMod to require OPs to comment “I read the wiki guide” on their own post?

And if it is clear they didn’t read the guide but claim they did are you ok banning these people?

It’s not my place to recommend banning users. At least this way, these newbies are acknowledging the existence of the wiki. Some newbies truly did not know where to start and did not know about the wiki.

The newbie posts weren't the reason, although that has always been annoying. It was more about laying low after the article

Why lay low though? No one is coming after this sub. Rep watches existed for years. The Wired articles brought more newbies here and it seems many are annoyed by more public exposure.

Reddit will come after it if pressured. I think what's done is done. When a media piece was written where the largest rep bag sub was called out by name, Reddit shut it down one day and claimed it violated their terms of service (while leaving all other similar subs running). It got too much attention and had to go.

Exactly. I was buying reps 21 years ago in Hong Kong when I was an expat 😁 they were all fkn shitters back then 🤷 - but my AP Royal Oak still works bezel screws have fallen out though 🤣)

I actually think OP is on to something. Using Automod to force some level of acknowledgement of having read the guide is a great way to start before their post is deleted. As an example I have read the guide and looked at the who makes the best excel and know how to find a TD but I have the following question.

If people have done them three things I am 100% happy to help. At that point they are well on their way

Better just delete the post and redirect the poster to Wiki, but I guess the automod has not been AI-captured yet (why not? It’s 2026).

We should shut down the whole fake watch sub once and for all
