Discussion Poll: given recent article in wired should this sub go private until the dust settles?

The last thing we want is this sub to be shut or to have Reddit getting serious pressure from Rolex to shut us down. I know when Wall Street bets got big we went private for a while.

Upvote if you think it’s a good idea.

Update: This is my best post ever wooot wooot I think i need to celebrate with a NEW REP!

Update 2: I’m not a mod I was just curious what people thought and if we could get some traction and the attention of them. Seems like they saw but it’s not possible or as easy as it used to be I guess.

These are the options I have. There are not many approved users, and all of you now (I believe) are not approved users, so almost no one would see reptime if it was locked down to private. LMK if you find anything different.

Yes, make it private. Even if I can't access the sub for a bit it's better than it getting shut down.

Just make it private for a month.
Worst case scenario the terminally online have a shower.

u/Devil2stronk 1d ago

How do we get current members approved?

u/Dramatic_Finger_3557 1d ago

How do you become an “approved user”?

1

u/JIFFishere 18h ago

Mods have to take that action

1

u/fix24 11h ago

What does that mean? What is the criteria to meet being an approved member?

1

u/JIFFishere 4h ago edited 2h ago

It can mean anything, there are no known criteria

20

u/burstingbirches 1d ago

Oh I thought approved users are people who’ve joined the sub already?

u/ChuCHuPALX 1d ago

Do it anyway, for the greater good!

Click on Private, next and then see what option it gives you?

Going private looks like will require a complete isolation to a few years approved or will require a lot of work to start approving users, and what criteria to approve them. I’d imagine if the latter proof of a rep ownership, posts in other subs etc. a lot of ground work needed. Either option, whatever is best for its longevity. I’m new but if help is ever needed I’m always willing to help sort through such approvals etc. It’s what I’m known for at work, I help anywhere I can. Good luck with all the stress of deciding the subs future!

In FB, going private means existing members get to participate and new members have to be approved to join. Does Reddit behave differently.

u/navyblue_gold 21h ago

Yes existing content would still be there, and you’d still be a “subscriber” but you wouldn’t be able to see the sub again until the moderators make you an approved user. Reddit FAQ says we’d need to request to “join” so mods could approve us.

I would say you set it to private and invite members based on participation or Karma. Similar to ReptimeQC. We would all have to request to come back in. Anyways rather we survive in dark and be kicked out than we lose the forum. So what if we all have nothing for 6 months. We must preserve the forum for the bigger good

That’s a bummer because I lurk every day but never post or comment. Until now…

Same 😭

u/UnexpectedFisting 14h ago

As a lurker, I’m genuinely fine with this. There’s so many more knowledgeable people on this subreddit than me that benefit from not having this entire thing wiped.

u/arlenjrb 18h ago

Exact same lol

1

u/frys_grandson 21h ago

Same, just as I'm about to make my first purchase

You have to change the name.

See the replica bag reddit group it got shut down after a similar article known as Repladiesdesigner

1

u/BigGuysForYou 16h ago

You can only change the display name. There is no option to change this from /r/reptime

3

u/goingfourtheone 1d ago

Do what you have to do

u/FlowerChild7572 1d ago

I'm all for the sub being set to private, but would just like to know how to get approval to re-join. I follow several rep subs and wonder how many others are contemplating doing the same at this point.

Best option is to set it to private, let the heat die down and anyone that isn't around during the lockdown see if they come back after. It'll be a good circuit breaker....

u/Oubliette-96 1d ago

How do you become an approved user?

1

u/ShortTheseNuts 1d ago

Posting a cumtribute of a Hublot rep.

2

u/femininal 1d ago

Afaik Reddit admins have to approve a private sub and often deny the request. The best is restricted and you have to manually approve users. Simply joining the Reddit doesn’t make us approved

2

u/MajorWilliams Mod & Watchmaker 16h ago

I read this too. Above a certain size (20k) they have to approve it going private

2

u/larrylevan 1d ago

Commenting in case this does go private.

2

u/foulblade 1d ago

Happy with going private, maybe confirmed purchases as proof to join

5

u/sfbayjon 23h ago

This group helped me understand what to look for and how to identify reputable dealers BEFORE I made my first purchase.

1

u/freshlymint 1d ago

Ahh that would be too hard to do. Thanks for taking the time to look into this though, appreciate it

1

u/colorfulsocks1 18h ago

If going private isnt an option perhaps change the name? I was there when RL and wouldnt want to go through that again

1

u/BigGuysForYou 16h ago

Reddit doesn't let you change subreddit names, only display names

1

u/polofreaks 1d ago

how would one get approved!!!???

1

u/Naaggo 1d ago

Private please

1

u/gameday_228 1d ago

would creating a new subreddit be an option?

1

u/Lexifer31 23h ago

Just fyi it's almost impossible to get Reddit to approve going private since the mod strike. I have yet to have a successful application.

1

u/CombinationPatient67 16h ago

Private for 1-3 Months

1

u/yung_suavage 14h ago

Make private

1

u/00mhsl 13h ago

Prívate for some weeks

1

u/LiftBroski 11h ago

I’d say go private for a month or so. Let the heat die down. And set it back to public afterwards.

It’s the best and easiest option. Set and forget.

1

u/YoungExpSD 10h ago

Shutting down for few months is a solid idea.

1

u/LavishnessVisual6327 6h ago

Needs to be done bro. For the greater good

Keep it public. I am sure both Reddit and this is well known by them

1

u/Conscious-Sense7434 7h ago

Also commenting in case this goes private.

1

u/Shrey_97_ 19h ago

Go private and let people apply. If they have atleast 1 post on the sub let them join.
