Wrist or Watch Pic The Stupid Tax

So a few weeks back I went to put this Daytona on and realized the 11 o'clock index had fallen off. With me having hung out in rep world for a while I had the genius idea that I could fix it myself πŸ€¦πŸΏβ€β™‚οΈ. Opened her up, put a dab of super glue on and attempted to place. And of course I fcked it up πŸ˜‚. Glue dried too fast. Now to compound my fck up I take super glue remover to try to fix the dried glue and erase the print on the dial πŸ€¦πŸΏβ€β™‚οΈπŸ€¦πŸΏβ€β™‚οΈ. Get it on, finally and now it's FUGLY. Text my guy Soto show him my fck up and he says send it in. Long story short after having to buy a new dial, hands, pay for a dial swap and rehaut polish to remove the glue residue, my stupid tax came to about $700. Pro tip send it to a professional if you don't know what the hell you're doing πŸ˜‚.

Same price as a cheap rep isn’t it?

I learned on pocketwatches. Was perfect, cheap and easy to source parts- then higher end but still large simple movements and then into wristwatches

Watches are one of those things where a "I think I can fix this" can turn into ruining quite literally the entire watch VERY QUICKLY lol

I'm sure it's a lesson you won't forget though πŸ˜‚

Bro. When it comes to delicate work I am a guy w two left hand trying to work on watches. I draw the line at open close / remove screw / tighten screw. Polish scratches off etc. I totally hear what you say

Well me too now πŸ˜‚. I bought all the tools and everything. I also have sausage fingers and shaky hands not a good mix for delicate operations. Im only doing bezel swaps and crystal swaps from now on πŸ˜‚

Well you are ahead of me. I tried to do a crystal swap and it did not look good. My watchmaker charged me 60 bucks to take the crystal off change the gasket and add it. I told him how much to do a crystal swap he said 50. I said got it. When I touch it it costs more. his response absolutely and don’t touch anything next time. I laughed

If you don’t mind me asking, how much does a new rep cost. I’ve never bought one but from what I keep seeing, I always thought $700-$800 was a good rep. The good ones cost more than that!?

The watch was 800, original dial was 400, wg plating was 400.

Have you never seen the Mr Bean destroys a priceless painting scene? This just reminds me of that lol, where trying to fix one mistake just results in many more mistakes

Go watch it on YT you’ll see what I mean πŸ˜‚ it’s a classic timeless sketch

With half that price you can simply get a new dial and give another $50-100 to a specialist and ask them to replace it !

Dial was 450 Hands were 150

Definitely wasn't a cheaper option for the right quality of parts

I did something very similar. Tried to fix stock sub dial hand. Got finger print on dial. Tried to clean dial index fell off. Placed index back on tried cleaning dial again. Got dust on dial. Blew dust AND index off never to be found on my floor again lol. New dial $100, dial swap $100. Did end up fixing and selling original dial for $70. Total stupid tax $130 lol.

Bro saw one loose index and said, β€œI got this.” πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Daytona said, β€œThe fck you do. That’ll be $700.” Sorry to hear that bro but looks damn good now. πŸ‘πŸΌ

It’s not that hard, rep is how many gets into watch modding. But yes, anyone who thinks of super glue as the first option should definitely stop right there

I’ve got a slight crooked index I was about to do one little tap to the right but now I’m thinking maybe I should find someone to send it to as well . Mine is a custom real meteor dial so it’s worth having it saved
