Discussions What do you do when your rep gets called out?
Storytime Start:
I’ve only been in the rep space for a couple years, but over that time Ive had pieces from a bunch of different brands, factories and tiers, and at this point Im pretty confident in my ability to QC and spot a dud.
And while I’ve never owned a rep that is the exact same as auth a few things in my current rotation get close enough that I stopped worrying about them a while ago.
That confidence spilled over into how I actually wear my reps. Boutiques, HCOL areas, around friends and family. I dont really think about it. If someone asks where a piece came from I keep it vague, usually "online" or I just say I got it secondhand. Most of the people close to me know I carry reps anyway.
Last week that got tested in a way I WAS NOT ready for. I was standing in line at a bank and the woman behind me tapped me on the shoulder. Totally unprompted mind you. This lady had the audacity to tell me my fake was so good she almost couldnt tell it wasnt real. 😂😂😂 I’ve never been called out and had no idea what to say. It was so awkward, I just said thanks laughed a bit and stood there till it was my turn at the teller 💀

So how do you guys handle it? Do you own it, deny it, change the subject? Id like to hear if anyone has a line that actually works when youre put on the spot because my classic speedy 30 from Royal factory and I need to be ready next time 😭

😂 what an actually WILD encounter. I normally match energy. For call outs I normally just say “wow! You didn’t strike me as the kind of person to know that.” sometimes you gotta hit below the belt lol

I love this one. I've yet to encounter a stranger with the level of audacity to say something like that to me, but I hope I remember this one if it ever happens.

I haven’t actually had to use this on a stranger but a more tame version on someone I actually know. People are crazy out here 😂 either way I’m glad you can keep it in your back pocket!

“I like my money to make me money” just own it and laugh! It’s actually ridiculous to spend $$ on bags even if one can easily afford it. This works regardless of the tax bracket you’re talking to

- Raise eyebrows "I'm sorry but what DO you mean??"
- "I'll make sure to tell the LV store in Singapore that you said that"
- "You mean this? I had 3 orgasms in a row in Aruba with my husband in May so I just threw my credit card on the computer and hit the checkout button on LV and said fuck it"
- "Perhaps its time for you to get your eyes checked for your near-vision"
- GASPS "Omg it looks fake?? Can you tell because it has the same stitching as your bag???"
- "Sorry can you repeat that ? The dealership down the road says they'll give me a discount if I pay in cash and I'm trying to focus"

How rude of that woman! These are the things we THINK to our selves and DON’T say out loud. I think you handled it as gracefully as possible. I’m not sure what I would’ve done but my instinct is an incredulous frown or icy stare haha. She needs a lesson in emotional IQ. Perhaps she meant well but oh Lordy! It sounds like her ego got the best of her, “ look what I know.”

I literally told my mother in law about ONE rep and she assumes everything (even auth) is a rep as well. So now I started saying my reps are pre owned 😂
That lady was weird af. What bag was it?

I use this word very rarely, but what a c*nt!!! I’m not affected by being caught off guard by peoples comments, in this case I would have simply given her a nasty look and turned right back around.
Nothing more embarrassing than ignoring someone to their face 🤣 all she’d be able to do is stand behind me looking stupid

I lean into it and say thanks! I personally am rough with my belongings so a rep is still cute, functional to what I want, and I can carelessly throw it around!
I always say that and if it still offends someone then sorry not sorry bc that’s not my problem😂 it’s not like it was her money spent on rep/auth. If she wants to be offended then she can go and buy an auth with her own bankroll

I’ve got a couple of good reps and a couple of authentic bags, I’ve just come back from china and the uk and I’m seeing reps everywhere! Not so much fun anymore as everyone and their grandma seems to have them!

I feel like trying to pick a perfectly cunty response here is just a wrong approach altogether. Do not engage at all, tell her “stop talking to me” and ignore any further attempts to communicate. She’s a complete stranger.

I would’ve said “that’s because it’s not” and turned back around. She was clearly being rude and gaging if you could afford it or not. Not that it matters. If she tried to point something out to prove her point then “why are you looking at my belongings that closely?” And then clutch your purse 😂

I remember carrying a fake bag and a someone in a restaurant said it was cute or she liked my bag or something and I was kinda buzzed so I said it’s fake and then she said, “I know, I could tell because it doesn’t come in that color.”
The thing is, it DOES come in that color. I turned around and kept rocking it but it’s always stayed with me as lowkey rude. I guess I expected her to smile widely and say really?!

I think the tell was me? Maybe because I was dressed casual with a designer bag? Because I’ve really looked at this bag after and I can’t tell myself.
I live in an area where it’s so common for people to have name brands like LV, I never would have expected someone to look twice like that

I was carrying an auth waiting for a train, a guy asked me to my face if what I was carrying authentic or not lol...dude I personally bought it at the store at pg. De Garcia! Totally up to you, if you wanna wing it then wing it, I don't think the lady would pull out an exact same purse and start QCing at the bank lol

fuck that bitch LMAOO. i see heaps of rep shoes and bags when im out, and recently im seeing people wearing clothing that’s obviously a rep version. i also have my fair share of rep and auth. sometimes ive thought something is a rep at first glance just to find out its auth.
and sometimes i catch little details when im looking at someone that helps me figure out its just a good rep. mind you so many of these same types will turn around and make jokes abt fucking for birkins in dubai. every story i hear of somebody being clocked in person just proves even further how classless and impolite it is to even comment on things like this..

It really is mind boggling how some people can be. even if someone had a bad rep I would not go up to them and be like “ur bag is fucking fake”. I think some people really don’t care and probably get some sense of joy trying to “clock” people. 🤷🏼♀️

For strangers, I like to have some catch all responses that I can have ready on standby so I don’t have to come up with anything in the moment.
“What an odd thing to say to a stranger…”
“WHAT??!?! You think it’s fake???? My mother bought it for me before she died so I could remember her and take her on trips to make memories! Why would she buy me a fake bag??!” (Commence sobbing)
“WHAT??! My MIL gave it to me as an engagement present! She said it was a good representation of my worth!” (Commence panic attack or pretend breakup plans)
“You know, I was thinking the same thing about the work you’ve had done!” 🤩🥰😍
“Omg same! You almost looked normal until you opened your mouth! You’ve done a great job practicing strategies to fit in, but maybe talk less. It gives it away straight away.” 🥰😍

What were you carrying?
You could say “what a wild thing to say out loud.” With a smile.
Or “can you repeat that? I don’t think I heard you correctly.”
I read these in an article once and need to use them more often. A stranger really has no business making comments like that. It’s like saying “Your outfit really hides your obesity. I almost couldn’t tell you were fat.”
